3. Design for Hilti HIT -Rebar

3.1 General notes

3.1.1 General design rules

The reinforcing bars shall be anchored in the way that a internal forces are adequately transmitted to the
concrete and that longitudinal cracking or spalling of the concrete is avoided. The influence of concrete cover,
spacing of bars and transverse reinforcement shall be considered.

For post installed bars, only straight ends of bars can be used for installation reasons.
In cases where normally hooks or bends are used to anchor or splice a bar, the anchorage of the post installed
bar should be carefully modelled. Special approaches have been evaluated and are shown in this section. In
general all requirements of the standard should be fulfilled unless special considerations are made and evidence
for suitability for other solutions are proven.

Special attention should be paid to the overall transfer of the anchorage forces in the structural element. Basic
principles of reinforced concrete construction apply for such investigations. It is within the scope of the user's
responsibility and engineering judgement to ensure the overall force flow and the equilibrium of the concrete
member.

3.1.2 Transfer of shear forces: specify rough interface

In reinforced concrete only tensile or compressive forces are attributed to the reinforcement bars. The shear
forces are transferred by means of a rough interface in consideration of the strut-and-tie model.
For details consult Appendix A1.

3.2 Basic design values in restraint concrete (not concerning edge distance and spacing)
3.2.1 Basic design values for bond and yield of steel
• The basic anchorage length is the straight length required for anchoring the design yield force in a bar,
assuming constant bond stress over the bond length at ultimate limit state.
• The values shown in Table 3.2 are valid for normalised conditions as shown in the table and should be
multiplied with the influencing factors as given in the Tables 3.2a to c.
The basic anchorage length is derived without consideration of edge distance and spacing nor
loading condition. They provide the basic values for the applications as shown in the following
sections.

3.4 Special cases
For bonded-in connections only straight bar ends are possible. This section treats the applications where cast-
in bars use bends to connect the tensile force to existing bars or compressive chords. Therefore special
considerations are necessary for the load transfer. Design should aim for ductile steel failure and brittle
concrete failure (tension and compression) should not occur in the adjoining element.
Note that all design approaches are simplifications and good engineering judgement is necessary for adequate
approximation.

3.5 Simplified approach by means of shear check (concrete cone failure)

3.5.1 General notes

In cases where normally bends are used to anchor the tensile force of a bar, the embedment length of the
bonded-in bar is determined by the Hilti HIT-Rebar CC-Method (for bonded-in bars, only straight ends of bars
can be used for installation reasons).

This method is based on the fundamentals of anchor model as shown in the actual Hilti Fastening Technology
Manual for bonded anchors.

3.5.2 Design considerations for Tables 3.5a and 3.5b.

The resistance of one single bar of a row of bars is the minimum of the three capacities derived from steel, bond

4.3 Example with lapped splice

• Bending moment:? msd = 120 kNm/m; shear at joint: vsd = 50 kN/m
h = 300 mm; d = 260 mm,
• top reinf.: ∅16 s = 150 mm; As,prov = 1’340 mm2/m, cover to face cf = 3 cm
20
• bottom reinf.: ∅10 s = 200 mm; As,prov = 390 mm2/m
50 • Concrete C25/30
30 • Note: reduced load in cast-in bar due to lever arm: η = 25 / 27 = 0.93
250 300 • Fire resistance: 1 h (F60),
light weight plaster 2 cm for fire protection.
Standard approach (Clause 5.2.4, EC 2 : 1991)
ds2 = 250 mm, z2 ≈ 0.9 x 250 = 225 mm;
≥ 10 ∅ As,req = 120 x 1.15 / (0.225 x 0.5) = 1’227 mm2/m
cast-in: ls = 16/4 x 500/(3 x 1.15) x 1.4 x 1227/1340 = 743 mm
⇒ linst = ls + c f + s/2 = 74 + 3 + 8 = 85 cm

Fire resistance (Appendix A10; FTM B 2.11): 1 h (F 60)

clear cover: c = 4 + 2 = 6 cm (additional protection light weight plaster)
Force in one bar (safety factors for loads see relevant code): FsF = 50 kN
τF = 50’000 / (16 x π x 740) = 1.35 N/mm2
Hilti HIT-HY 150: τRT = 1.7 N/mm2 > 1.35 N/mm2 ok
Hilti HIT-RE 500: τRT = 0.8 N/mm2 < 1.35 N/mm2 ⇒ increase plaster to 4 cm ok
