Dear Parishioners,
Jesus first words as ever: “Peace be with you”. The disciples were in fear and alarm. He
showed them his wounds of suffering – then asked if they had anything to eat. Food and
sharing of it is always so important to Jesus. He loved weddings, inviting himself to dinner
and of course the Last Supper. All of this reminds us that he has given himself to us in the
words of scripture and the Eucharist, the food for our spiritual journey through life.
St Peter, in today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, relates what has happened in the
betrayal and death of Jesus. He claims that those who carried out his death did not know
what they were really doing. He repeats the words of Jesus on the cross: “Father, forgive
them, they know not what they do”. This is a wake-up call for us today. People are suffering
and we are not even aware or we may feel we can do nothing. Yes, we can! Our little efforts
are so important; our attitude of support for those who work for peace and reconciliation.
Leading to the …
PILGRIMAGE TO EUROPE: The aim of the Pilgrimage organised by our Justice and Peace
Commission was to try to build bridges between ourselves here in the UK and Europe. It
was a show of solidarity with all who seek peace, justice and reconciliation.
Our first step was to visit Secours Catholique, the organisation that supports the many
migrants in Calais. We met Bro. Johannes, who used to be at the Catholic Worker at
Mattison Road.
Then Brussels and Strasbourg visited the European Union and the Council of Europe
(which we remain part of after Brexit). In Strasbourg it was good to make contact with the
Kurdish people keeping vigil outside the Council of Europe buildings.
Taize (near Lyon) was amazing! There were 3,000 young people joined in prayer, study,
workshops and just enjoying each other’s company.
Then Assisi to follow in the footsteps of St Francis and St Clare; we prayed for Pope Francis
and his leadership; his inspirational Laudato Si document – Care of our Common home. A
day visit to Rome – while we saluted all the main sites, we met with the Community of Saint
Egidio; founded in 1968 after Vatican II and dedicated to works of charity, evangelisation
and prayer. There are 50,000 lay members worldwide. (We need to learn more!)
Finally a visit: to the United Nations in Geneva to learn a bit more about the UN
peacekeeping strategy. Thanks for all your prayers which helped in a magnificent
pilgrimage.
PEACE: We hope and pray that the conflict in Syria does not escalate into something even
more horrible.
