Book Review of a book on the Art of Preaching
The book that I read was Part 1 of Communicating For a Change by Andy Stanley and
Lane Jones. Though the title may be suggestive as a general communications book, the
content is brought across is done in regards to the preaching environment rightly so see-
ing Andy Stanley is a preacher.
In Part 1 of the book much is not said as it relates to the delivery of a sermon or presen-
tation (this may not be so in part 2) or presentation but more is said as it relates to the
preparation of a sermon. The writing style of Part 1 is narrative in nature but at the same
time informative, this is helped by the teacher and student dialogue used throughout
where the preacher learns from several persons one at time as to how he can become a
better preacher.
Chapter 1 speaks about the preacher recognizing the deficiency in his preaching. He ac-
tively goes out though albeit reluctantly at first but with a little prodding from his wife to
seek help. Other principles we see brought out in this chapter is to continuously work on
developing yourself(.(this includes reviewing/listening the sermons you have done)
Chapter 2 doesn’t give much as it relates to preaching but rather serves as a filler chapter
to develop the narrative. Chapter 3 we see it being conveyed that before preaching one
must determine his goal, in simple terms what it is that you hope to accomplish. Know-
ing this the preacher or any communicator for that matter is much more able to convey
his message to others easier. It makes it easier for him, to convey only the most essential
information that is necessary. Within the same chapter we see that preaching carries a lot
of weight as folks eternal destinies are at stake
Chapter 4 speaks about picking a point. A good sermon is not haphazard speaking about
any and every interesting thing. The preacher should know what truth he intends to con-
vey, how we will start out and how he will end. Just as how driving the driver knows
2|Page
where his destination ,so should the preacher. It is also promulgated in the chapter that
there should be a single sentence that encapsulates the message in essence to achieve
this “you’ve got to narrow the focus of your message to one point. Then everything else
in the message supports, illustrates , and helps to make it memorable.” The reason for
this single point is that the congregants are more able to remember a single important
versus many important points. With this single one point message in mind the preacher
will know where he is going or where he intends to take his congregation.
Chapter 5 speaks to the fact that both the human and divine has to work together as it re-
lates to the message. As such the preacher needs to do his part in preparing a structured
message before preaching but the. The traditional view of a sermon outline is challenged
to be more of a map ,so instead of using different unrelated points everything leads to
one single main point as discussed in Chapter 4 .The latter outline also being different in
a sense that there is a focus to be relational/engaging the audience versus simply inform-
ing them in essence “we’re not teaching the Bible to people; we’re teaching people the
Bible.”. The mnemonic of the map/outline which is discussed is “ME-WE-GOD-YOU-
WE” . ‘Me’ being where you start and tell people a bit about yourself, so they can trust
you.’ ‘We’ being where “an emotional common ground” is found with the congregation
about the message. ‘God’ is where you build upon the emotional connection formed and
introduce biblical truths. ‘You’ is where an application is made to the congregation at a
personal level. ‘We’ is where a common vision is casted, the inspirational aspect of the
message, what would happen if God’s truths were applied.
Chapter 6 conveys the importance of internalizing the message. The message that the
preacher is about to preach he should be so apart of Him that he does not need notes or
directly to be reading from a manuscript. Chapter 7 speaks to engaging the audience . It
is said in the chapter that it does not make sense if you know where you are going but
yet you have left the audience behind, as such you need to engage the audience and one
of the most crucial ways to do that is by showing them “how the truth impacts their
lives” .”Another way is to look at scripture from the various viewpoints and then answer
those questions that different segments of the congregation may be asking to keep them
connected.
Chapter 6 also speaks to the importance of transitions in the message so that persons lis-
3|Page
tening don’t become victims to an abrupt shift. Non verbal cues can also serve as transi-
tions such as moving to a specific spot to represent a new ideas.
Chapter 7 we the importance of finding your voice. Allowing your personality to blend
through in your speaking, being your authentic self. It is also conveyed that we should
attempt to talk to people and not at them. A method which is suggested to have a conver-
sation with your audience but not having them speak is by asking your audience ques-
tions and then answering them, the important thing being that you are acknowledging
that they are present. It is also brought across once more the importance of reviewing
yourself after speaking , a video if possible.
Chapter 9 speaks to the importance of prayer before ,during and after preparation and as
to whether your preparation is on track by asking yourself the questions “What do they
need to know? Why do they need to know it? What do they need to do? Why do they
need to do it
Chapter 10 didn’t present much new information but it rather reiterated the previous
chapters and that no matter how long one has been in ministry change can be made as it
relates to his preaching
Overall, I found this book to be a very informative and worthwhile reading. The method
presented would apparently yield better results at reaching our postmodern generation.
Sermons will most need to become more engaging and interactive with the onslaught of
modern media without sacrificing principles or truths.

Sermon Outlines
Introduction – The Bible is said to be one of the oldest books on earth, spanning about
1000 years and Inspired of God. Can we really believe that this book is from God? Is it
accurate or true?
Illustration- Persons may be referred to as promise kings, that is they have a history of
making promises but not fulfilling them as such persons may view them as not
trustworthy. God and His Word are filled with promises but they have been proven time
and time.
Joh_13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe
that I am he.
2Pe_1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye
take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day
star arise in your hearts:
Examples Daniel 2 ,7 8 which all predicted the history of nations before they happened
is one of the greatest evidences that the history falls exactly in line with biblical proph-
ecy is a case for its validity. There also other prophecies about the coming of Messiah,
When he would come and where he was born that was fulfilled.
14 | P a g e
Point 2 – Scripture is inspired
2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Man did not write the bible, but rather God used different men through inspiration to
convey what He wanted in His Holy Scriptures.
Summary- The Scriptures are God’s Love letters. They send forth His messages of love
to us. They are true, accurate and inspired of Him, and as such should be followed.
Appeal- Will you make a covenant with God to study His word daily ? If so please stand
with me.

Topic- Origin of Evil
Title- Good God, Bad World , Why?
Introduction- If God is all good and powerful ,why is their violence, why is their suffer-
ing?
Text: Revelation 21:4
Illustration- Story of Mother who gave Eye that her son could see.Likewise the bible
tells us that God has a love for us that surpasses even our mothers
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Zec_2:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the
nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.
God loves us all. He is there in the crisis, even when we apparently cant see Him.
Believe that He is there. The death of Jesus is evidence to this fact.
The Devil tempted our fore parents to sin and with its consequences when they yielded

Sin has also resulted not only in mans spiritual demise but also his physical

Death,Sickness
Hatred, Grief, Revenge the reasons why people kill among others are all symptoms of
sin and Satan
God does not delight in the suffering of His children but so that the magnitude of sin and
the devil can be exposed, He allows sin to plays out.
If he had destroyed Satan from the very first time he sinned the angels and us may have
served him out of fear as their would be sympathy for Satan.
In this world of sin and hurt. Christ promise to be with us and give us nothing we cannot
bear
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of
our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb_2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them
that are tempted.
1Co_10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God
is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the
temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Isa 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the
rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be
burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
God loves us ,He sent His son to die for us. Sin is the reason for the suffering that we
face on earth, but God promises us a new earth and heaven to come that will not have
any pain or suffering.
Appeal
My Friends, In all your pain and suffering by faith Know that God Loves you. Will you
live for Him today? Do you want to be apart that world where there will be no more sin
and suffering? If that is your desire please stand with me.

Topic Salvation
Title: Sale Sale: Premium Stain Remover Bleach on Sale
Introduction: God has a bleach on sale. No matter how your white clothes may be filled
with stains. His bleach is powerful enough to remove them. God has a process by which
he can change the darkest darks to the whitest whites
Point 1
We all have sinned. The Good works that we do not can in no wise atone for our sins or
merit us salvation
Rom_3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of
the law.
Isa_64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy
rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Point 2
Christ died so that we might be released from the penalty of sin.
Rom_5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.
Joh_3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to
condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto
justification of life.
19 | P a g e
Point 3
God’s bleach washes us of sin completely and covers us with Christ righteousness
Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as
scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as
wool.
Rev 7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are
arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
Rev 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they
which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white
in the blood of the Lamb. Zec 3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and
stood before the angel.
Zec 3:4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take
away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine
iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
Summary
We all have sinned and come short of the glory God. Nothing we do of ourselves can
attain to righteousness but Christ came and died for us so that we might have the for-
giveness and washing away of sins.
Appeal
Heaven is offering this bleach free of cost. My friends will you allow the Lord Jesus to
wash away your sins. Will you accept the sacrifice he has offered?

Christ Came and Ascended
Isa_9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be
upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty
God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Rev_12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of
iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
Act 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and
a cloud received him out of their sight.

Christ will come Again
Act 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this
same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye
have seen him go into heaven.
Heb_10:37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
Christ coming will be audible and loud

1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice
of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Point 3
His coming is near
2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after
their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell
asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation
2Ti 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2Ti 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy……
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive
many.
Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled:
for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Mat 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there
shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
From Scriptures it is clear to see that what was prophesied to happen close to the coming

of Christ is occurring in the world now. Hence we can safely say that the coming of
Christ is nigh.
Summary- Christ came to this world. He ascended to the heavens. But He has made a
promise to return. We understand that His coming is not a quiet or invisible one and will
be witnessed by everyone. The events happening all in the world today signify that His
coming is near.

return?

Topic: The Sabbath
Title - The Forgotten Delight
Text: Exodus 28
Introduction: There is a blessing from God, A delight that we all have forgotten, that id
the fourth commandment. The commandment that starts ouy ironically as “Remember”
Point 1
The Sabbath Commandment in the Old Testament
The commandment for sabbath keeping can be clearly identified in the Old Testament.
Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
Exo 16:23 And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow
is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and
seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until
the morning.
Jer_17:22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do
ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
Point 2
The Sabbath Commandment in the New Testament
Act_13:44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the
word of God.
Act_17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days
reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
Act_18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and
the Greek
Rev 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of
a trumpet, (Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. )
Some say that sabbath was only for the Old Testament Period, but the scriptures in the
26 | P a g e
New Testament clearly shows that the sabbath was being kept after Christ’s death
In fact Matthew 24 Christ speaks of his followers praying that their flight not
Being on the sabbath .Christ making reference to the sabbath to the future after his death
should be quite impeccable evidence that the sabbath is still to be kept.
Point 3
Blessings in the Commandments
Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my
holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt
honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking
thine own words:
Isa 58:14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride
upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for
the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Isa 56:2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it;
that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil
3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even
as thy soul prospereth.
Keeping the sabbath the way God intended we get one full day of the week to rest ,reju-
venate ,spend time with family and most of all God, a sure fire way to improve health.

Summary – Both the OT and NT show instances of sabbath keeping and its relevance.
There is both spiritual and physical blessings in keeping the sabbath.
Appeal- My friends will you not receive of the benefits and blessings of God’s holy sab-
bath day? John 14: 15 tells us that if we love Jesus we will keep His commandments.
Will you not obey Him and keep the sabbath?

Topic : State of the Dead
Point 1
Death is sure
Jas_4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is
even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Heb_9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
28 | P a g e
said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Point 3
Future of the dead
While the dead may not be in heaven now, at Christ Second coming the righteous dead
will be resurrected and ascend to heaven with Him
1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which
sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and
remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice
of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet
shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1Co 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall
have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is
swallowed up in victory.
Summary- Scripture teaches that we all must die, death is sure. The dead have no con-
sciousness and they rest in the graves until the resurrection.
Appeal- Let us live our lives to the fullest for God before we die. My friends let us strive
to die in Christ. If its your desire to live for Christ please stand with me.

Summary
God gives us wisdom through His Holy Spirit and word as to how we should live. Scrip-
ture admonishes us to not have pleasure in ungodliness or wickedness rather we should
meditate on things that are pure and noble. God will give us the strength we need to
make the decisions for Him.

Topic : Millennium & New Earth
Title : Life after Death
Text: Revelation 21:3
Introduction: What happens after the Second Coming? Is hell real? Is it an event or place
? Lets find out what scripture has to say.
Point 1:
The earth will be destroyed
2Pe_3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the
heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent
heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Rev 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the
saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and
devoured them.
Luk_21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Point 2:
Hell/ Judgment
The judgment of the wicked happens during the millennium
1Co_6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to
this life?
Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto
them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for
the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had
received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned
with Christ a thousand years.

After the 1000 years have passed, we see the event called hell
Rev 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the
saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and
devoured them.
Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone,
where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever
and ever.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the
lake of fire.
Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first
earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Rev 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more
death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former
things are passed away.
2Pe_3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new
earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Summary- The earth will be destroyed starting from the second coming and recreated at
third coming.Hell is real ,its not a place but more of a event. After hell and death are
done away with, we see a new heaven and new earth where the former things are passed
away.
Appeal – My friends will you make the effort to be a citizen of that coming new heaven
and new earth? If so, choose Jesus today.

Spirit are able to work with this post modern generation
3. Present opportunities for the young people to have their questions answered so
they will not feel as if they are blindly following something
4. Having targeted social media campaigns to present the gospel across these plat-
forms.
6. Tying informative presentations with issues that affect youth at occasions where

Reflection on the Role of the Holy Spirit in Preaching ( Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit the third person in the godhead has been active in the work of redemp-
tion and in a similar sense He has been involved in Preaching done by Christ followers.
It is hard to point at to any point or stage in the preaching process where the Holy Spirit
has not been closely involved. Before the preacher is called the Holy Spirit is their call-
ing Him to preach, He is their with the preacher in the preparation of the sermon, deliv-
ery of the sermon and working on the hearts and minds of the listeners before, during
and after the sermon.
The Holy Spirit is said to distribute varied gifts to the members of the church of which
preaching is an attribute of some of those listed. In sum we can conclude that it is the
Holy Spirit that gives one the ability to preach. The Holy Spirit not only bestows this
gift upon varied persons but He also calls them to ministry. Many a preacher may be
able to trace his conviction to preach before he started to preach, a conviction that comes
from the Holy Spirit.
When the preacher has been called , once he remains connected and surrendered to God
the Holy Spirit will guide him in His study and preparation
Joh_16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all
truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he
speak: and he will shew you things to come.
2Ti_2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The preacher must open his preparation with prayer and free himself from bias and

physical distractions so that he may be open to the voice of the spirit.
Whilst working on the preacher and his sermon preparation the holy spirit is so organiz-
ing the circumstances and situation that those who needs to hear the message he will de-
liver will be in attendance. The spirit too may give persons a conviction to be in attend-
ance to hear the message.
In delivering the message the Holy Spirit illuminates the preacher and gives him power,
authority and utterance as he delivers the message. A man who may have a stutter, may
find clarity being given to his speech or other physical manifestations as vocal strength.
The experience can be such a dynamic one that what the preacher prepared beforehand
the Holy Spirit will give him to present at the moment in a different light or manner than
he himself expected but for the best results, he may find thoughts he never had before
are now flashing through his mind under the impression of the Spirit and, where before
he may have had difficulty conveying his thoughts and constructing sentences he now
does such with relative ease. While this may not be true for all preachers what is true is
for all preachers is that in the moment there is boldness granted to them to declare the
truth with power and authority.
Eph_6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth
boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
Act_4:29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that
with all boldness they may speak thy word,
Act_4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled
together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God
with boldness.
At the same time the preacher is speaking the Holy Spirit is working upon the hearts of
the listeners that words they hear may bear fruit. This process also occurs after the mes-
sage. The spirit is convicting persons to make life changes and commit to God based on
the truths and appeals which they are hearing. Without the spirits promptings and ap-
peals to the heart the message by the preacher is powerless to create life changes and
bring persons to the foot of the cross.
Joh_16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness,
and of judgment:

When once responds to the spirit beckoning assurance is given of salvation and the
peace that passeth all understanding in like manner after doing God’s bidding the
preacher receieves the assurance that He has done as God commanded Him
The Holy Spirits place a very active and essential role in that of preaching. He is their in
both the preparation and presentation of the gospel. He works on hearts that they might
accept the message of mercy and grace.
