5 a) Compute the diffusive mass of chloride through a vertical clay wall AB. Assume one (4)
dimensional flow only. Permeability of clay is 10-9 m/s. the effective diffusive
coefficient 0.9 × 10-9. And porosity is 30 %.

 b) What is meant by Phytoremediation? Explain its merits over other remediation (5)
techniques.
6 Compute the total mass flux of chloride ions of flow through a horizontal clay liner as (9)
shown in the figure. The concentration of chloride in leachate is 1500 × 103 mg/m3.
The chloride concentration beneath the liner is 2000 × 103 mg/m3. Coefficient of
permeability of clay is 10-9 m/s and effective diffusion coefficient is 0.5 × 10-9 m2/s.
Porosity is 40 % and neglect dispersion.
