Whilst sadaqah is voluntary giving, zakah as one of

and savings. It is given by any adult Muslim who
has paid all debts and expenses, and has over a
certain amount leftover (it differs depending on
what valuables and cash are being considered).
The actual percentage varies depending on what
a person owns; their wealth may be in animals,
properties, businesses, and so on. It is not a tax, as
it is only paid by those who can afford it. You could

In Makkah I felt like a member of something really special. The whole unity and equality thing was
humbling. We didn't connect with people for who they were or what they wore; they were just fellow
Muslims from all over the world, all doing the same thing from their hearts. You con never feel this in
normal society. To see the Ka'aba was more beautiful than I hod imagined, very emotional actually.
Praying seemed more real as I didn't have to imagine the Ka'abo ... I could see it, felt so close to Allah
and the words meant more. Imagining history, Muhammad~ showing his love of Allah and I was doing
the some as I did Towof I realised that from now on prayer would be for more of a highlight in my
daily life. Doing the sa'y taught me that I should only really be running around for the essentials in life
and that essential was Allah. Material stuff had no real significance. On the stand at Mount Arafat,

hod; how my thoughts and actions weren't right. It was quite sobering to get my head around it all. I
felt a weight off my shoulders and was determined not to put it all back on!! Allah hod forgiven me
so I need to make the most of it. Temptation ... well we all foll into it as Shaytan is around us ... but
I hove made a conscious decision to not always toke the easy path as that is usually the wrong one!
Hajj changed me for the better, but I need to keep that in mind and not slip bock to old ways.
On returning home
I om from a village just outside Coiro. My village saved up for me to go on hajj. No one else will go

Prayer hall - This is a large open space with the floor separated into

I om 15 years old and a Shi'o Muslim. I live with my family in the north of England. There
is a large Muslim community here, but it is a Sunni community. My parents wonted
a good education and for me to fit in, so along with my sisters I attend a Church of
England school. My dad hos a small bakery and mum helps him make the bread and
' noons. They didn't wont me to attend a Muslim school as they ore all Sunni. It con be
a little weird with school assemblies and of course I cannot pray my early afternoon
prayers as I'm in lessons. My eldest sister is due to be married but it's been really difficult
for my parents to find a marriage partner as only one in seven Muslims here ore Shi'o.
The mosque we attend is 25 miles from where I live ... it's the nearest so I don't go to
modrossoh. I only get to my mosque with my dad at weekends, but I wont to go everyday
... so we pray at home together. I do hove Sunni friends outside school, but sometimes I
feel it a bit funny because some of them think I'm not a proper Muslim. Its only really at
this point I feel different as most non-Muslims just see me as a Muslim and don't know
there ore different groups. My school teaches about Eid festivals but not about Ashuro
and how important the month of Muhorrom is for Shi'o Muslims ... Shi'o history is not
something that is taught regularly.

Khums
This is unique to Shi'a. Most pay khums, as a 20 per cent tax upon annual surplus
income. Khums should be split six ways: Allah, Muhammad ~' relatives of Muhammad ~
, orphans, the needy, anyone who is away from home and has no money to return.
A Muslim cannot pay khums directly to Allah, so originally this portion went to
Muhammad ~ to be spent for the good of Allah. After Muhammad ~ died, and at the
time of the first 11 imams, the first three portions used to go to the imam of
Muhammad's ss family to be spent in the same way. Now it can be paid to religious
teachers. However, as khums is a particular Shi'a act (and only 10-15 per cent of Muslims
are Shi'a) the poor do not receive as much as they would if all Muslims paid it.
Hajj
For Shi'a Muslims hajj has the same significance as for all other Muslims. It has an effect
on the individual, the family and the community as a whole. Imam Sadiq says that for a
believing man in a village who stays in Arafat, Allah will forgive the sins of all in the
village, and for a single man of a believing family Allah will forgive the sins of all that
family. Many of the eleven Shi'a imams have spoken of the importance of personally
seeing the Ka'aba, the black stone, Arafat, Mina and the animal sacrifice.
The fourth imam, Imam Abedin said 'Perform the hajj and the umrah so that your bodies
become healthy, your sustenance is expanded and your faith improves.' These words really
show the value of this journey.
