A. OVERVIEW

My project is a response to the gender based discriminations inflicted upon Indian

women as it pertains to the social and legal ramifications that will ensue if action isn’t taken.

While the overarching topic is the empowerment of women in the Republic of India, my

supplementary and more specific topic is the advancement of protective legislation in this nation,

along with improved enforcement of such measures. The predominant reason behind my interest

in this conflict stems from a VICE HBO documentary that I watched a few years back, and to put

it plainly, I was appalled at what I witnessed. From the graphic visuals to the overall heinous

state of affairs, I felt compelled to act then, just as I do now. Thus, the following questions drive

and guide my research in order to ensure that my project effectively addresses and unveils the

horrors embedded within the Indian culture:

1. What is the current state of living like for women throughout India, in terms of

limitations and abuses endured in their day to day type of living?

2. What legislative advancements could improve this state of affairs?

3. What, if any, international efforts have been made to address this conflict?

4. How would the Indian public react to such amendments?

My project will be in the form of an art gallery, consisting of art pieces ranging from two

dimensional forms such as photography and paintings, to one possible large installation that
would act as the focal point of the collection. I will be creating all of the pieces, and am hoping

to have a minimum of 10-15, so that the nature of the gallery is professional and reflective of

what an acclaimed gallery would resemble in today’s world. My projected consultant will be Mr.

Butler based on our close relationship and his interesting historical perspective. His influence

would hold great value, aiding me in the “non-visual,” components of the project, and helping

me polish my research.

For the actual venue itself, I plan to hold my event at a car dealership that would be

emptied for the purposes of my gallery. I have a personal relationship with the owner, making

the event free of cost. In addition, this spacious place would allow for a larger audience which is

crucial if I am to successfully sell pieces. Thus, the success of my project would be based upon

the net profits received from the selling of my work. Finally, the materials I will need are the

various supplies required to make the art (ranging from paint to stretched canvas), which I

possess most of already, and in the case that I am restricted from hanging art on the walls, I will

buy easels to present each piece.

B. LEARNING TARGETS, GROWTH, GOALS, AND SKILLS

Learning Skills:

What I will need to learn reads as follows:

● How to set up and run a professional art gallery (food/catering and money/tracking of

sales)

● How to negotiate dates and times with the owners from the dealership
● How to reach out to members and organizations of this community for sponsorships,

donations, attendance etc.

Enhances Skills:

The skills that I plan to enhance read as follows:

● Writing emails and making phone calls in a professional manner

● Marketing and advertising

Areas of Growth:

The areas that I plan to grow upon read as follows:

● Procrastination and time management

● Responding to problems that arise effectively and calmly

C. MARKETING PLAN/FACILITIES/AUDIENCE

My project would be intended for nearly all audiences, but more specifically for two

demographics: those old enough to attend high school and beyond and those who are of

influential position. To begin, an issue such as this must be absorbed by those with mature

enough mindsets or its urgency may be overlooked or missed. If the gravity of this topic were

truly comprehended, it would provoke further investigation by many of the attendees. This call to

action and deepened understanding are the primary objectives of this project; molding my

audience to secure this effect is critical. Furthermore, people of influence are hopeful targets as

well, as they can be the ones to spread the most awareness. My work on this topic will in no way

end following the closing of the doors at the event, so if I can begin this journey on a political

scale, and have government officials attend, the impact will be that much more magnified. Both
groups of people will benefit in their widened sense of awareness, and as a result, as will the

afflicted whose states are no longer hidden.

I will use various marketing methods to increase the likelihood of the latter of these

individuals attending by: reaching out to local officials, attempting to schedule meetings and

conferences to discuss it, and utilizing personal relationships with First Colonial alumni to come

into contact with those of higher rank that I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. As for the

remaining population, I will form a diverse environment by more inexact means. By posting

advertising flyers around the school, pending Mrs. Godfrey’s approval, to utilizing all available

social media platforms, I will attain a strong base of students my age, and family members who

are interested in supporting. To expand this demographic, I will also contact various

organizations, consisting of the law firm I interned at over the summer, and local businesses that

would help to promote this cause.

D. PROJECT STEPS

F. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
This project is one of extreme importance to me, and my passion for this topic will be the

driving force and motivation that pushes me to step away from my comforts, and embrace a

challenge. Before settling upon the idea of creating an art collection, I considered alternatives

ranging anywhere from seminars to a documentary. However, I felt so deeply attached to this

issue that I needed to see this emotion shine through whatever I chose to create. This construct

then left me with the only project idea that I knew I had the skillsets to complete effectively, so

that I’d leave a lasting impact on the community. Though I’ve considered myself to be an artist

for years, I tend to utilize a select few mediums; never really branching out to others that were

foreign to me. Now, I am presented with such an opportunity. In addition to this challenge, I am

also competing with time. A few months may sound like ample time to complete an art

collection to the average ear, but knowing myself and the hours I will have to put into each piece,

along with the large sizing that I plan to incorporate, this will be no easy venture.

This effort fortunately comes with much reward. For, this time spent will result in

legitimately profitable pieces, that can be sold for sums that equate to sizeable donations for an

organization who advocates for the same issue as I. But, separate from monetary developments,

in plain, I will be spreading the word for a truly noble cause. These abuses can no longer go

unnoticed, and though a senior project from one academy student may seem insignificant, the

smallest step is just that: a step. Raising awareness for more obscure and specific issues such as

this is crucial, for real change can never be sparked, without someone tipping the first domino.

G. PROJECT-PAPER CONNECTION
I chose the legal issue of improving current legislation and protective measures at work,

to base my research paper off of in order to fixate on the systemic sexism that is the rooted in

India’s government. The connection between this topic and the empowerment of women in India

is transparent; the only difference being that for my paper, I am delving into its legality. For, I

am ultimately investigating the explanation behind how a developed nation can be plagued with

so many human rights violations. This idea will also lead me into research regarding the United

Nations, and how international law has been an influence on legislative advancements for India.

H. ACADEMIC HONESTY

I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project will result in failure

of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma.
