28th /29th APRIL 2018 – 5th SUNDAY OF EASTER

You’re hopelessly lost in the middle of nowhere, and you can’t

access your Google Map because you phone battery’s dead...
You got separated from your group/family in a crowded place,
and you can’t text or call them because your phone refuses to
do anything other than show you a black screen...
You woke up an hour (or two) late because, despite having set
your phone alarm last night, your forgot to connect the charger
and your phone went kaput somewhere around 3am...

Many of us stress about charging our phones in order to avoid these ‘nightmare’ scenarios.
We look for charging stations in libraries, restaurants, trains, buses, etc. or equip ourselves
with powerbanks and car chargers. Once I saw a person crouching uncomfortably outside a
smelly public toilet, all for the sake of charging a phone on a power socket located by its
wall! We obsess about plugging our phones, because ‘no batt’ means no music, no messages,
no calls, no photos, no games, no maps, no clock, no internet...

In today’s gospel, Jesus uses the image of the vine to make his point: “I am the vine, you are
the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off
from me you can do nothing.”(Jn 15:5) The people in those days would have understood
the implication of Jesus’ words: a branch disconnected from the vine might stay green for a
few days, but can produce no grapes... which means no wine... which means no joy and no
fun and no life at the parties! In contrast to water, wine is that ‘something extra’ that makes
life special, delightful and enjoyable.

I wonder what Jesus would say if He were to speak to us today using ‘our language’... “I am
the power socket, you are the phone. You need to constantly connect with me, and then you’ll
have plenty of battery life to make full use of your phone. If you don’t, your phone will be as
useful as a paper weight!” I suppose it doesn’t sound as poetic or as beautiful as the image of
the vine and the branches... but you get the idea.

Often we feel like we go through life with a ‘flat battery’ – tired, exhausted, bored, feeling
lonely, loveless... Perhaps we can try to reconnect with Jesus just as we religiously charge
our phone, and ‘recharge’ with God for strength, hope, joy and love in our lives!

God bless, Sr. Devy
