Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Adaptations for Life!

Objectives:
Students will be able to explain what an adaptation is and will ultimately be able to create
appropriate adaptations on an imaginary animal to allow it to survive in its environment.
Students will design adaptations for given environments/scenarios.
Students will define adaptation.
State Standards:
6.L.4B.2 Obtain and communicate information to explain how the structural adaptations and
processes of animals allow for defense, movement, or resource obtainment.
Context:
We will be defining the term adaptation and examining examples of adaptations in nature.
Within this content, we will be looking specifically at mimicry and camouflage. Possible
activities could include face painting and student creation of unique organisms that use mimicry
to their advantage. This will be the beginning of a new lesson. After this lesson, students will
learn the predator prey and symbiotic relationships such as commensalism, parasitism, and
mutualism.

Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)
 SmartBoard
 Laptop
 Computer
 Notebook
 Pencils
 Adaptation Homework
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):
Begin with a class discussion of what animals need to survive — the four basic needs of animals:
food, water, shelter, and space. Have students answer the following questions individually, then
discuss with partners.
 Do the things that satisfy these four needs differ for different animals? (Yes, animals
need different types of shelter or food)
 Do they differ for animals that occupy different habitats? (Yes, diff habitats have
different resources)
 Do all animals need the same type of food? Same amount of water? Same type of shelter?
Same amount of space? (Yes they all differ)

Teacher Directed (40 minutes):

Show students a few adaptations on the Smartboard such as cacti, venus fly traps, Stapelia
flowers, elephants, polar bears, giraffes, etc. Ask them what types of characteristics would you
think helps the following species live in certain places. I will sit down with students, and explain
the origin of adaptations and how it relates to Charles Darwin. This will be a preface to the other
activities.

Collaborative (40 minutes):

Students will participate in a webquest. They will work in pairs to learn more about adaptations
of many different species. They will use laptops to use the digitalized webquest which has
hyperlinks to certain websites. The link to the webquest is
https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/cms/lib/NC01001395/Centricity/Domain/7897/ADAPTATIONS%
20NATURAL%20SELECTION%20WEBQUEST%20v3.pdf . They will follow the links to
websites, and fill out the worksheet.
Independent Digital (40 minutes):
Students will participate in an interactive online activity. The link to the exploration is
http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/explorations/adaptation/ . Students will individually
navigate to learn more about adaptations and Charles Darwin.
Closure (5 minutes):
When the class comes to a close, ask them as a class to give a brief definition of the term
“adaptation” in their own words. They should work collaboratively to come up with one final
definition.
Rationale:
(Multimedia 1= App or website): Why this piece of multimedia? How does it support
student learning and your standards and objectives? How do you know it is of high-
quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support
your rationale.
The webquest provides websites that will allow students to learn about adaptations of species. It
supports student learning by allowing them to be digital citizens. It meets state standards and
objectives through concentrating on a topic that is in the required curriculum. The websites that
students must navigate are high-quality because they provide much information and will benefit
the students.

(Multimedia 2= App, website, video, educational game, song, podcast, etc.): Why this
piece of multimedia? How does it support student learning and your standards and
objectives? How do you know it is of high-quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the
Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support your rationale.
The exploration online activity will provide more background information on Charles
Darwin and adaptations. This website supports student learning because they will become better
equipped to navigate the internet, as well as have more knowledge of the topic that is being
discussed. This is a high-quality source because the website, Scholastic, is very reliable and will
be beneficial to the students.
