Importance of a Certified Nurse Assistant in Hospitals

Certified nurse assistants focus on their patients from the moment they step foot in the

hospital, and it goes on until the patient is ready to leave and make their way home. Hospitals

wouldn’t function without Nurse Assistants they are the ones that check and are there for

whatever the patients need. Certified nurse assistant(CNA) benefit the modern hospital by

helping patients with basic living activities, tending to patient issues and problems, and by

collaborating with other health professionals about a patient’s care.

The main job of a CNA is helping a patient with their daily needs. Some of these

activities are the ones that people need to do like going to the bathroom, eating and anything that

the body requires. Any care that the patient needs help with the nurse assistants will be there.

Nurse assistants will have to manage many technologies, many different cultures, and meet many

new people to maintain the comfortability of a patient. They may get their hands dirty or do jobs

that others wouldn’t be able to handle and that’s where people see the love and admiration of

their job. They do all of this so a patient could go back to doing their own basic needs. “Nurses

are there to make their patients day,” says Korrie McFarlane. A nurse’s day starts by asking the

patient if they need to go to the bathroom, need to eat, or take them a shower. In the hospitals,

they do the job that registered nurses can’t always do. They are the ones that have to give the

essential care to the patients. The job of nurse assistants may not always be easy or enjoyable

unless that’s a person’s passion. As Linda Ford stated, “The rewarding part of this job is being

able to help people out.”

Patients have various problems from family to legal problems that nurse assistants help

out with also. Nurse assistants are there to make the patient’s emotional and physical problems

get better. They are there to assist the patients in anything some patients go through emotional

issues because of a loss of a limb or maybe because of finding out of a terminal issue. The nurses

help by talking to the patient and making sure they are stable. “Good and bad deaths focused less

on patients’ needs and the dying process and more on the death event and nurses’ abilities to

manage organizational demands” (Costello). Nurse assistant helps out the patient if they are

being threatened by any other staff worker or another person. CNAs are also there to stand up for

the patient’s right and safety. Nurses have to be advocates for the patient’s right because not all

patients are able to defend themselves. Many things are seen in hospitals, patients being

assaulted or battered by nurses or doctors. The safety of the patient is the crucial and most

important action to be a great CNA. “Nurses are an important component of the health care

delivery system and that nurse staffing has impacts on safety” (Clarke & Donaldson).

Teamwork is essential for the best care towards a patient. Different healthcare

professionals are involved in a patient’s safety and recuperation. Nurse assistants work mainly

with registered nurses(RN) on a daily basis to get the patient back on their feet. CNA have to

take orders from the RN since they are only able to help with basic activities. Nurse assistants

have to collaborate with other health care workers that may not always satisfy with the attitude or

the way they do their job. As Korrie McFarlane said, “Teamwork is important, it’s frustrating

when others don’t have a person’s back.” It’s hard not to depend on others in this field that’s

impossible. Patients go through really tough times, and they need all the support and best care

adequately for them. Health care teams have to be ready for in case of an emergency and to assist

the patient to safety. “Studies have demonstrated that teamwork is a critical element in assuring

patient safety and quality of care” (Kalish & Lee). CNA have to be able to associate with

everyone; there’s no choice with who a person has to work with as long as the care is given to

the patient. Being able to work with anyone is the key to success and good care.

Nurse assistants are essential to the modern hospitals because they help the patients with

their basic living activities for their daily tasks, problems or issues of a patient, and teamwork

cooperation. Hospitals wouldn’t be able to sustain without nurses. Certified nurse assistants

make a great impact on the life and care of a patient.
