STEELWORK To provide a surf ace which will ensure optimum coating performance, preparation is required
PREPARATION to remove surf aces which have a sharp edge. These include, but are not limited to, plate
edges, weld spatter, plate laminations, weld undercuts, or gas cut surf aces.

SURFACE • Oil or grease, salts, dirts, chalk marks and similar contaminants shall be removed as far as
PREPARATION: possible, prior to surf ace preparation, using an appropriate method in accordance with ISO
12944-4.
• Sharp Edges, weld spatter, cavities and deformations are to be removed in accordance
with ISO 8501-3, table-3
• Assess the steel surf ace for Rust grades as per ISO 8501-1
• Surface shall be cleaned by abrasive blast cleaning (ISO 12944-4 Cl.6.2.3.1.2) in
accordance with ISO 8504-2 (Cl. 5.1.2)
• Surface cleanliness shall be as per Sa2.5 in accordance with ISO 8501-1
• Surface profile shall be 50-60 microns as per ISO 8503-4
Compressed Air
• Air used for blasting must be clean, oil free and dry. Moisture and Oil separators have to be
used to ensure the same.
2 2
• The pressure should be at least 7kg per cm (100lbs per inch ) at the nozzle.
Abrasive
• Abrasive used for blasting should be dry and free from dirt, oil, grease or contamination and
have content of water soluble matter not exceeding 0.05%.
• The abrasive must be capable of producing the standard of cleanliness and surface profile
specified. (Sa2.5 and profile of 50-60 microns)
Cleaning
• Bef ore initial blast inspection, the bulk of the spent abrasive should be removed. Any
substandard areas should be identified and repaired. All marking paint, chalk etc., m ust be
removed after rectification.
• Fabrication repair (if any) should be carried out before application of the primer.
Following inspection of the blast profile and standard, remaining traces of abrasive and dust
should be removed from all areas.

PAINT Weather Conditions

APPLICAT ION:
• Surfaces to be coated must have a temperature at least 3ºC (5ºF) above the dew point,
immediately following blasting and priming, intermediate and topcoat application, and must
also remain in this condition during curing of the coatings.
• As a guide, relative humidity levels of 25-80% give optimum painting conditions,
although some applications may be carried out upto 85% relative humidity.
• Painting can be carried out on steel temperature upto 45 C.
• Painting should not be carried out during windy conditions.

General Site Requirements

Prior to any work being carried out there are a number of conditions which must be met.
a) Cleanliness
Any contaminants which may come in contact with the steel (even before surf ace
preparation comments) can compromise the performance protective coating system, and
as such all effort must be made to keep the working area clean. It is good working practice
to establish a clean area where painting is being done. Cleanliness must be maintained
throughout all stages of the application.
b) W eather Shelters
Weather shelters should be made available to cover application equipment during mixing
and application of material.
c) Paint Storage Facility
All paints should be stored ideally between 10ºC (50ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF) and facilities may be
needed to store the materials in the correct temperature range prior to mixing and application.

STRIPE
COATING • Stripe coating is an essential part of good working practice, and stripe coats are highlighted
in the detailed product specification sheets.
• Stripe coats are applied to areas where it is difficult to get the required coverage, including
but not limited to:-
Y Plate edges
Y W elds
Y Difficult access areas
Stripe coats are normally applied to a specified film thickness range via a combination of
narrow angle airless spray and brush methods. Over coating intervals for the stripe coats
should be strictly adhered to as per the individual product data sheet.

Primer Coat
Intergard 200 HS
1 X 180 MIC
• Application : By Airless Spray, 1:45 airless machine would be ideal.
• Mixing Ratio: 3 : 1 by volume(Base : Hardener)
Mix the base using a power agitator Add C/A slowly during mixing and mix well for 5 minutes.
Ensure complete mixing of Base and C/A. If 20 litres complete mixing is not possible then
proper measuring jars should be employed to ensure accuracy.
• Tip size : 0.48 – 0.63mm (19-25 thou)
• Output fluid Pressure at spray tip : Not less than 176 kg/cm2 (2,500 p.s.i.)
• Thinner GTA007 (Use only when required) The thinner consumption should not exceed
more than 20%
• Check W FT during application using comb gauge
• For 225 microns dft the W FT shall be 180 microns
• Check DFT and record

Repair Procedure
The repair procedure recommended will depend upon the extent of damage involved but can
REPAIR
be split into:-
PROCEDURE
(i) Repairs of major/minor areas when the primer paint is effected
(ii) Repairs when Primer is intact & the Second Coat is damaged
(iii) Repairs when Primer and Second Coat is intact but the finish coat is damaged
(iv) Repairs work on external due to poor aesthetic of Finish Coat

(i) Repairs of major/minor areas when the primer paint is effected

A major repair should essential be dealt with as if the project were beginning. The
recommendations given earlier for steel preparation, coating application etc, MUST all
be adhered to. The original complete coating scheme should be applied. This is
specific when the primer is damaged.

(ii) Repairs when Primer is intact & the Second Coat is damaged
Under this heading are repairs to areas damaged either at the initial coating stage or
caused during service, mechanical damages, handling damages etc. The principle
requirements are:-
Y The area to be repaired must be free of oil, grease etc and fresh water washed and dry.
Y Remove any corrosion by means of either:-
a)Vacuum blasting;
b) hand tools, i.e. disc sander and grinder.
Y Abrade area immediately surrounding repair to provide key for subsequent paint
application.Apply,
Y Interseal 670HS – 125 microns dft
Y Interthane 990 – 50 microns dft
If small areas are involved and application is by brush, several coats may be required to
achieve the correct dry thickness. If the area is large then airless/air spray has to be
employed. A f ull recoat would be required to maintain aesthetics.

(iii) Repairs when Primer and Second Coat is intact but the finish coat is damaged
Under this heading are repairs to areas damaged either at the initial coating stage or
caused during service, mechanical damages, handling damages etc. The principle
requirements are:-
Y The area to be repaired must be free of oil, grease etc and fresh water washed and dry.
Y Remove any corrosion by means of either:-
a) Vacuum blasting;
b) b)hand tools, i.e. disc sander and grinder.
Y Abrade area immediately surrounding repair to provide key for subsequent
paint application.
Y Checks DFT, if the DFT is as per specification (190 microns) then apply 50 microns of
Interthane 990 as mentioned in the paint application procedure.
Y For minor areas brush could be employed, however f or major areas airless will ensure
aesthetics. A full recoat would be required to maintain aesthetics.

(iv) Repairs work due to poor aesthetic of Finish Coat

Under this heading are repairs to areas damaged either at the initial coating stage or
caused during service, mechanical damages, handling damages etc. The principle
requirements are:-
Y The area to be repaired must be free of oil, grease etc and fresh water washed and dry.
Y Abrade area with smooth emery.
Y Apply one full coat of Interthane 990 @ 50 microns
