Resumen
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate antimicrobial activity of dichloromethane and methanol extracts from six
plants against multi-resistant bacteria. Materials and methods: Extracts were obtained from
leaves of each plant studied using extraction with solvents method (methanol and
dichloromethane) and dried in a rotaevaporador. In order to evaluate antimicrobial activity agar
dilution technique was used (adapted from EUCAST) to determine MIC values of five dilutions
(10, 5, 2, 1 and 0.5 mg/ml) against six bacterial strains with multiple resistance to antibiotics. All
assays were performed in duplicate and incubated 24 hours at 37ºC. Results: From twelve
plant extracts tested, only two showed an inhibitory effect. Helichrysum italicum extracts showed
inhibition against gram-positive bacteria under study (S. aureus ATCC 43300 and E. faecalis
ATCC 51299). CMI of methanolic extract in before mentioned strains was 1.0 mg/ml and
dichloromethane extract was 0.5 mg/ml. Conclusion: Study of medicinal properties of plants
has generated results that have provided solutions to issues as important as malaria. In this
case screening from six plant species resulted in the finding of one of this with methanolic and
dichloromethane extracts of which at low concentrations inhibit two resistant bacterial strains.
This represents a potential source of new molecules that could be used as alternative against
anti-bacterial resistance.
