Introduction to the Civil War: understanding the differences between the Northern and Southern States
Overview
In this lesson, students will begin their introduction to the Civil War. They will have read the
chapter before the start of class and have watched “how to use: Bubbl.us”. The students will learn to
the make a double bubble mind-map using the bubbl.us website and the information about the
Northern and Southern states before the Civil War.
Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to learn how to complete a mind map using bubbl.us website
Students are expected to understand the differences between the states before the Civil
War and how these differences lead to the war
Gather information by taking notes, making outlines, and creating graphic organizers.
Use content specific technology tools to support learning and research.
Identify multiple perspectives of historical events.

Mind-Mapping Lesson Plan
Pre-activities
Before class starts review chapter/lesson note and make sure all websites work
Take attendance, collect homework, remind students about their in-class cell phone policy,
review Civil War Facts by having the students take a quick poll to see where everyone stands
from: https://www.polleverywhere.com/ (15 minutes)
Activities
Have students break into groups of three (or equally divided small groups depending on size of
class), have them use their phones/laptops/computer to start a group mind-map using bubbl.us,
they will save their work on google drive five minutes before class is over. (17 minutes)
Assessment
Students will complete a cause and effect mind-map as homework, due as homework after
lesson is complete.
