In Dmitry Moor’s artwork “Have You Volunteered?

” the piece shows a russian soldier pointer

directly to the viewer while in front of a factory. The piece contains both diagonal and vertical
lines. Vertical lines are present with the soldier standing in the foreground with some curved
and jagged line to give the clothing a sense of imperfection and wrinkles. Vertical lines are also
present on the factory’s funnel tubes. Diagonal lines are present on the soldier's clothing, the
stick that he is holding and the fumes coming out of the chimneys. There are also
Mathematical shapes as well present in the piece for example the windows are squares. There
is also a sense of space for the emphasis is put on the soldier while behind him is the factory.
This gives the illusion and perspective that the soldier is standing in front of the factory. Color
is important in this piece. Hue in the piece is dominated by the color red as seen on the soldier
and factory as well as the upper lettering. Its value is very bright with the soldiers face, clothing
and factory while dullness is seen in the smoke clouds and stick. Intensity is high. Balance is
somewhat off for the soldier is bigger than the factory. Movement is used in the painting for
the viewers eyes can go from the factories in the background to the soldier’s torso to him
pointing to the smoke in the background. Rhythm is created by smoke by giving the illusion of
flow.

In Dmitry Moor’s “Wrangel is Still Alive, Finish Him Without Mercy”, the piece contains
horizontal lines that are jagged. This is noticeable in the outlines of the soldier with the sword.
Diagonal lines, as seen in the lower left corner of the piece as well as the red soldiers legs and
sword that give off the sensation of movement. Movement is also visible with the viewer's eye
moving through the paintings three aspects: the red soldier, the commanders on the lower
right and land on the lower left. There also seems to be semi like mathematical shape with the
oval shape surrounding the red soldier. The piece also contains both positive and negative
spaces. Positive being the red soldier, landscape and army officers while negative spaces
would be the red background and white interior space. Hue in the piece is dominated by dark
red while the value of the piece is dominated by light colors such as red and white with black
being a dark value. Intensity, with the exception of the white interior, is of medium intensity.
There seems to be a cool vibe to the piece. Balance seems to be equal among spaces and
colors. Variety is also used to its fullest extent within the piece not only in the objects but also
in color and actions.

In both “Wrangel is Still Alive, Finish Him Without Mercy” and “Have You Volunteered?”
by Dmitry Moor the artist uses the concept of war to convey the theme of patriotism and
responsibility within the following two artworks. Both pieces use diagonal lines, as seen
with the smoke and the soldier and the land, respectively in “Wrangel” and
“Volunteered”. However, the use of vertical lines in “Volunteered” is noted within the
soldier’s posture. This combined with horizontal lines can give off a sense of stability and
stolidity; this is reflected within the soldier’s attitude in the piece.
