In Dmitry Moor’s “Wrangel is Still Alive, Finish Him Without Mercy”, the piece contains
horizontal lines that are jagged. This is noticeable in the outlines of the soldier with the sword.
Diagonal lines, as seen in the lower left corner of the piece as well as the red soldiers legs and
sword that give off the sensation of movement. Movement is also visible with the viewer's eye
moving through the paintings three aspects: the red soldier, the commanders on the lower
right and land on the lower left. There also seems to be semi like mathematical shape with the
oval shape surrounding the red soldier. The piece also contains both positive and negative
spaces. Positive being the red soldier, landscape and army officers while negative spaces
would be the red background and white interior space. Hue in the piece is dominated by dark
red while the value of the piece is dominated by light colors such as red and white with black
being a dark value. Intensity, with the exception of the white interior, is of medium intensity.
There seems to be a cool vibe to the piece. Balance seems to be equal among spaces and
colors. Variety is also used to its fullest extent within the piece not only in the objects but also
in color and actions.
In both “Wrangel is Still Alive, Finish Him Without Mercy” and “Have You Volunteered?”
by Dmitry Moor the artist uses the concept of war to convey the theme of patriotism and
responsibility within the following two artworks. Both pieces use diagonal lines, as seen
with the smoke and the soldier and the land, respectively in “Wrangel” and
“Volunteered”. However, the use of vertical lines in “Volunteered” is noted within the
soldier’s posture. This combined with horizontal lines can give off a sense of stability and
stolidity; this is reflected within the soldier’s attitude in the piece.
