MATLAMAT (GOALS):
The aim of the subject is to understand basic finite element theory and its application to the solution of
engineering problems. It will provide the sufficient knowledge in using FEM based software for professional
works.

SINOPSIS (SYNOPSIS):
General Introduction to Finite Element Methods, Matrix Algebra, Axial Elements, Beams, Trusses and
Frames, One-Dimensional Elements, Two-Dimensional Elements, Three-Dimensional Elements, Analysis
of One-Dimensional Heat Transfer Problems, Analysis of Two-Dimensional Heat Transfer Problems,
Analysis of Fluid Mechanics Problems. Analysis of Two-Dimensional Solid Mechanics Problems
Applicationsof FE Software.

HASIL PEMBELAJARAN (LEARNING OUTCOMES):


At the end of this course, the students are able to:

(1) Engineering Knowledge - Prepare matrix equations to solve problems in axial/bar/truss/frame


structure, heat transfer and fluid flow by using standard finite element method (C5, LO1)
(2) Modern Tool Usage - Apply appropriate finite element modelling techniques using finite element
method software including prediction and modelling, to complex engineering activities, with an
understanding of the limitations (C4, LO2)
(3) Investigation - Conduct investigation into complex problems using research based knowledge and
research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis
of information to provide valid conclusions using finite element method (C5, LO4)

Lab Assignment 1-4


Students are required to model and simulate structural, fluid and heat transfer problems by using finite
element analysis software and then verify the prediction model by using theoretical-analytical method.

Project:
Students are required toinvestigate complex real life problem by employing finite element analysis software.

Students who do not fulfill item 1 of the above are not allowed to attend further lecture and sit for any form
of assessment. Zero ‘0’ mark will be given to students who fail to comply with item 1. As for HW course,
students who fail to comply with item 1 will be given Failure Attendance (HG) grade.
