Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives Assessment

Students will use effective listening and Teachers will listen as each student

new student teachers. Students will also answering questions about themselves, and
practice communicating about themselves. observe the students listen to their peers.

Materials/Resources:
Emily PowToon video link
Kayla PowToon video link
2 balls of yarn
Index cards (enough for the whole class)

Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:

PowToon links already up on the computer and ready to be played
Yarn will be out on table
Step by Step plan (numbered):
1. Lesson Beginning
a. Miss. Anderson and Miss. Taylor introduce themselves- both students at TCNJ,
will be the student teachers in the classroom for the rest of the year, are super
excited to get to know each student, and to be a part of this 5th grade science
classroom
i. Miss. Anderson will introduce herself first, followed by Miss. Taylor.
2. PowToon Videos
a. (Kayla give directions) “Miss Anderson and I each made a video about ourselves
to share with you. While we are watching the videos, we know you may think of
questions that you want to ask us, but please wait until the video is over and raise
your hands.”
b. Miss. Taylor will show PowToon “All About Me” video to the class and allow
students to ask questions at the end
c. Miss. Anderson will show PowToon “All About Me” video to the class and allow
students to ask questions at the end
3. Spider Web student facts
a. (Emily give directions) Describe the directions of the game- Students will sit in a
circle with their group and one person at a time will hold the end of the yarn and
say an interesting fact about themselves. Once the fact is given they will keep the
yarn end in one hand and throw the ball of yarn to another person in the group.
This will continue until there is an interconnected web of students.
i. Emily: “Now that you have learned a little about us, we want to learn
about all of you! So today we will be making two class spider webs from
yarn and facts about ourselves. There will be one group and each student
will sit in the circle in an open part of the room. Then one person at a time
will hold the yarn and say an interesting fact about themselves, that you
want Miss. Taylor and I to know. Once you say the fact, you will hold the
end of the yarn in one hand (demonstrate) and throw the ball of yarn to
another person in the circle. This will create an interconnected web of
students plus Miss. Taylor and me! If the ball of yarn does get dropped
only the person that dropped the yarn can get up and pick it up. One table
at a time can come and join the circle and we can start creating our class
web!”
b. *If the class size is large/ around 20 students*
i. Students will be split into two different groups, count off the students by
“one-two-one-two”, and move to an open area of the room. Miss.
Anderson will start with one group and Miss. Taylor with the other.
ii. If there is extra time, once each group has every child part of their “spider
web”, both student teachers will switch groups, so they are able to learn a
fact from the whole class
c. Depending on the class energy, students will either reverse the spider web order
and repeat what the fact the student said before them, or will place the completed
web on the ground and wrap it up, this will be stated in the directions
d. Students will return to their tables at the end of the activity.
4. Closing
a. (Kayla give directions) Students will be given an index card to share a question
they did not want to share in front of the class or a word of advice they have for
us as their student teachers (how to teach them or the class, not advice for how to
be a teacher).
i. Kayla: “That’s the end of our activity! Everyone please return to your
tables and listen for directions. *Give time for students to get back to their
seats. * It was great getting to learn a little about each of you. Soon, Miss
Anderson and I will pass out index cards. On your index card, please write
either a question you still have for us or something that you want us to
know that will help us better teach you. We will take the time to read what
each of you write, and if you have a question we will make sure you get
your answer from us. When you’re done with your index card, please put
them in this box. Throughout the rest of our time with your class, the box
will be in the room for you to write important notes for Miss. Anderson
and me. The box will be (insert where the box will live).” *Begin to
handout index cards*

Key Questions (that you will ask):

1. Have you ever heard of TCNJ or had student teachers in the past?
2. What else would you like to know about me? (Asked by both, Miss Taylor and Miss
Anderson)
3. Do you have any questions about our role in your classroom?

Logistics:

PowToon videos and materials for spider web game will be prepared before lesson and before
students are brought whole-group for the lesson beginning.

Timing:
2 min lesson beginning
8 min for introduction videos- 2 min each teacher video and about 6 min for questions
15 min spider web activity (about 7 min before the switch of teachers)
5 min closing
.
Transitions:
Students will be brought to a whole-group setting before the start of the lesson. Students will
count off by twos to be placed into groups and will move to a different location based on the
number group they were assigned. Transitions will be monitored by Miss Anderson and Miss
Taylor.

Classroom Management:
Explain directions of the spider web activity before moving to their group, and directions for the
index cards closing before passing out the index cards. We will communicate to the students that
they should save their questions until after the PowToon video has finished and should not be
talking when other students are talking, for example with during the spider web activity.

Differentiation:
We have no prior knowledge of the students, but we are giving shy students the opportunity to
write a question/concern down on the post-it for us to read.
