Properties of Matter: Expert Speaker

Student Name: Kayla Taylor and Emily Anderson Grade Level: 5

Guiding and/or Essential Questions:


How can experts be used to further understanding of a subject?
What is a “good” interview question?
What is thermal conductivity?
What is electrical conductivity?
What is magnetism?

Pre-lesson Assignments and/or Student Prior Knowledge


Students have researched and learned about real world applications of thermal conductivity,
electrical conductivity, and magnetism. Students have learned what makes a “good” interview
question and brainstormed questions for the speaker.

Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1.C
Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion
and elaborate on the remarks of others.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.3
Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons
and evidence.

Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Students will apply what they learned about Teacher will assess student questions during

Materials/Resources:

Step by Step plan:


1. Lesson Beginning:
a. Teachers will introduce the expert speaker and remind students to use the skills
they learned yesterday while asking questions.
2. Guest Speaker:
a. The guest speaker will give their presentation and answer student questions. They
will have a 5-10-minute blurb about themselves and the students will have the rest
of the time to ask questions. If the speaker has a longer presentation or experiment
to do with the children, then they will have more time to present.
3. Closing:
a. Teachers will remind the students when there is 10 minutes left.
b. At the end of the presentation, the teachers will remind students to thank the
speaker.
c. Before students leave, the teachers will suggest that students make a note of
something they learned today because they will share tomorrow.

Logistics:
Timing:
50-minute lesson:
Beginning- 10 minutes
Plastic collection and graphing- 35 minutes
Closing- 5 minutes

Transitions:
Limited transitions will be necessary, but teachers will remind students to come in
quickly, put their materials away, and clear their desks. During the presentation, teachers
will ensure that students are being respectful listeners and not getting up during the
speaker.

Classroom Management:
Teachers will remind students to be respectful listeners before the presentation starts.
During the presentation the teachers will monitor student behavior and remind students to
be active listeners. If necessary, teachers will ask students to move seats or leave the
room.

Differentiation:
This activity naturally differentiate itself because students will be able to ask questions that align
with their own level of knowledge.
