RAINFALL ANALYSIS AND ESTIMATION

Introduction:

Rainfall or Precipitation is a product of any product of the condensation of atmospheric water

vapour that falls under gravity (wikipedia.com). In this, the significant amount of rainfall dictates

different factors such as amount of rainfall per year.

Objectives:

After the laboratory exercise, the students should learn:

1. To analyze rainfall reading of CvSU – Agrometeorological Station for the year 2017.

2. To estimate the missing rainfall reading based on the readings of other observing station;

and

3. To estimate rainfall reading over an area.

I. Analysis of rainfall readings

Gather the monthly average rainfall readings of CvSU – Agrometeorological Station for

the year 2017. Analyze the data gathered by presenting it in graphs and tables, identify trends

and relation.
II. Estimation of Missing Data

1. Station X becomes inoperative during a storm. There are three station surrounding station

X. It is found out that the annual rainfall reading in the station X falls within 10% of the

annual rainfall reading of the surrounding stations. The reading of the three surrounding

stations during the storm are 89mm, 60mm, and 96mm. Determine the estimated rainfall

reading in Station X.

2. Station X does not provide any reading during the month of July. There are 4 stations

surrounding station X, Station A, B, C and D. The annual rainfall readiing of Station X,

A, B, C and D are 1060mm, 1000mm, 820mm, 1055mm, and 1105mm respectively.

Station A, B, C, and D provide an average rainfall reading of 88mm, 82mm, 90mm, and

96mm during the month of July. Determine the missing data for Station X during the

month of July.
III. Rainfall over an Area

1. Determine the average monthly rainfall in a 500 ha watershed based on the rainfall data

for September of 5 rainfall gaging stations. The areas of the corresponding Theissen

polygons are also indicated.

2. Determine the average rainfall over the area given the following data:
