Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is development that meets the needs of the

present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. So
basically this sustainable development want to build inclusive, sustainable and resilient
future for people and planet. It have 17 goals to be achieve by 2030. The oil and gas
industry operations give positive and negative impact towards community, economies and
ecosystem, which its covered in SDGs.
One of the goals are to ensure the access to water and sanitation for all (SDG-6).
Fresh water is crucial for people for domestic usage and also for consumption. The oil and
gas industry can contribute clean water to the needed society. The statistic of oil and gas
show high increment of water being produced than oil. So instead of dispose this water, the
oil and gas industry can be treat them so that the water quality increases until which it can
be use as daily consumption. Oil and gas industry also can increase the efficiency of water
usage. To improve water use efficiency, companies may apply the ‘reduce, replace, reuse,
recycle’ approach. They also can reuse and recycle the wastewater to be use for hydraulic
fracturing. In Range Resource (USA), they utilize the usage of wastewater and produced
water for their hydraulic fracturing. They able to save cost about 3.2 million USD by cutting
water purchases, wastewater disposal charges and transportation costs.
The second is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern
energy for all (SDG-7). Basically preserving energy is essential for economic growth,
employment, education, poverty reduction, and health and safety. Oil and gas industry can
improve access to energy services through shared infrastructure by working together with
local community to determine the best ways to align their investment in a project that
benefits both, companies and local community needs. There`s some companies invest in
high-grade biofuels. The example is at Eni S.P.A. (Italy), converted the Porto Marghera
refinery in Venice to produce high-grade biofuels. They produce bio-oil by organic fractioning
of municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, wastewater and other agro-food waste. The results
are that refinery is capable of producing 300,000 tons of green diesel per year using refined
vegetable oil.
The third goals are to take urgent action to combat climate change and its
impacts (SDG-13). The oil and gas industry are one of the major cause that give climate
change to the earth, basically the emission of greenhouse gas (GHG) release during flaring
usually. So the oil and gas industry plan a strategy for zero emission of GHG that is zero
flaring concept by 2030. Flaring is necessary for safety purposes and many company
already taken action to reduce the flaring operations. The zero flaring concept propose that
reduce the flaring of the associated gas by capturing and using it for power generation,
liquiefied for transport or use for gas injection to stimulate the production. This concept
already apply at Saudi Aramco (Saudi Arabia). They capture the waste carbon from large
sources, example, power plants, and use it as gas injection into flooded oil reservoir instead
of using water injection to enable oil recovery.
