PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
6 Empowered by the Spirit Confirmation Human Spirit (Inner Spiritual Strength)
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
Inner Strength is a gift of the Holy Spirit shared by Jesus with the members of the Church community. Members of the Church receive this through the
Sacrament of Confirmation. From personal experiences and experiences with others, people begin to discover their own inner spiritual strength and how
this can help them to be heroic in their efforts to do good. This leads them to wonder at God, the creator, who empowers human beings to do what is good.

Jesus demonstrated great heroic, spiritual strength. He promised to share the Holy Spirit with the Church to empower them to develop inner strength like
his. The extent to which this strengthening will grow depends upon the individual’s daily prayer, worship and genuine efforts to live as Jesus taught,
particularly those outlined in the beatitudes. Catholics continue to wonder about their inner spiritual strength and when confirmed, are reminded of how the
Holy Spirit deepens the strength given by God when creating their souls.

PLANNED RITUAL – Primary (Year 6)
WELCOME

Good Morning and welcome as we give thanks and praise for the wonderful gift of God’s Holy Spirit. We welcome Father (Insert Parish Priest name) our Parish Priest,
Confirmation Candidates, their families, sponsors and friends. In Baptism we were united with Christ, and in Confirmation, we celebrate receiving the gift of the same Holy
Spirit given to the Church at Pentecost. The lives of the Apostles were dramatically transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, two thousand years on, this same Holy Spirit
is living, breathing and moving in the hearts and minds of all those who believe.

Confirmation calls us to a fuller and deeper commitment in our faith. With the help and gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit we are challenged to return to our families, our
schools, our workplaces, our communities and our world; spirit-filled and ready to spread the Good News to all we meet.

Today we pray that God’s Holy Spirit will settle in the hearts of our Confirmation candidates and empower them to authentically live out the faith that they freely proclaim, with
a determination and holy passion that will sustain and encourage them throughout the whole of their lives.

(Please Stand)

ENTRANCE SONG: ONE FAITH ONE HOPE ONE LOVE (ANDREW CHINN)

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING: ACTS 2:1-11

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind
blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were
all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PS 103:1. 24. 29-31. 34

Response:
Send forth your Spirit O Lord,
and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the Lord, my soul!

Lord God, how great you are,
How many are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your riches Response

You take back your spirit, they die,

returning to the dust from which they came.
You send forth your spirit, they are created;
and you renew the face of the earth. Response

May the glory of the Lord last for ever!

May the Lord rejoice in his works!
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
I find my joy in the Lord. Response

SECOND READING: GALATIANS 5:16-25

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Galatians

The fruit of the Spirit
If you are guided by the Spirit you will be in no danger of yielding to self-indulgence, since self-indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit, the Spirit is totally against such a
thing, and it is precisely because the two are so opposed that you do not always carry out your good intentions.

If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you. When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: fornication, gross indecency and sexual irresponsibility; idolatry
and sorcery; feuds and wrangling, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels; disagreements, factions, envy; drunkenness, orgies and similar things. I warn you now, as I warned
you before: those who behave like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control. There can be no law against things like
that, of course. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires. Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.
The word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: SUNG

Alleluia, alleluia!
The Holy Spirit will come and reveal the truth.
Alleluia!

People: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John
People: Glory to you O Lord.

GOSPEL: JOHN 15:26-27, 16:12-15

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
The Spirit of truth will guide you into all the truth.

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness.

And you too will be witnesses, because you have been with me from the outset.
I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you now.

But when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he will not be speaking as from himself but will say only what he has learnt; and he will tell
you of the things to come. He will glorify me, since all he tells you will be taken from what is mine.

Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said:

All he tells you will be taken from what is mine.

The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

promises to the Lord in your name.

THE LAYING OF HANDS:

Priest: My dear friends, in Baptism, God our Father gave the new birth of eternal life to his chosen sons and daughters.

Let us pray to our Father that he will pour out the Holy Spirit to strengthen his sons and daughters with his gifts and anoint them to be more like Christ, the Son of God.

ALL PRAY IN SILENCE FOR A SHORT TIME

Priest lays hands upon all candidates by extending his hands over them and says:

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who brought these servants to new birth by water and the Holy Spirit,
freeing them from sin: send upon them, O Lord, the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete; give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of knowledge and piety;
fill them with the spirit of the fear of the Lord.
Through Christ our Lord.

People: Amen

Candidate: Amen
Priest: Peace be with you
Candidate: And with your spirit

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL: (PLEASE STAND)

Priest: My dear brothers and sisters,

let us humbly pray to God the Father
and be of one mind in our prayer,
just as faith, hope and charity,
which proceed from his Holy Spirit, are one.

Reader: For these servants, whom the gift of the Holy Spirit has confirmed: That, planted in faith and grounded in love, they may bear witness to Christ the Lord by their
way of life,
Lord hear us

People: Lord hear our prayer.

Reader: For their parents and sponsors that by word and example they may continue to encourage those whom they have sponsored in faith to follow the footsteps of
Christ,

Lord hear us

People: Lord hear our prayer.

Reader: For the Holy Church of God, in together with Francis our Pope, Timothy Costelloe our Archbishop, and all Bishops: that gathered by the Holy Spirit, the Church
may grow and increase in unity of faith and love until the coming of the Lord.

Lord hear us

People: Lord hear our prayer.

Reader: For the whole world, that all people, who have one Maker and Father, may acknowledge one another as brothers and sisters, without discrimination of race or
nation, and with sincere hearts seek the Kingdom of God, which is peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Lord hear us

People: Lord hear our prayer.

Priest: O God, who gave the Holy Spirit to your Apostles, and willed that through them and their successors the same Spirit be handed on to the rest of the faithful, listen
favourably to our prayer, and grant that your divine grace, which was at work when the Gospel was first proclaimed, may now spread through the hearts of those
who believe in you.

Through Christ our Lord

People: Amen.

the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed
and entered willingly into his Passion,
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying:
take this, all of you, and eat of it,
for this is my body,
which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
he took the chalice
and, once more giving thanks,
he gave it to his disciples, saying:
take this, all of you, and drink from it,
for this is the chalice of my blood,
the Blood of the new and eternal covenant,
which will be poured out for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.
The mystery of faith.

People: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,

we proclaim your Death, O Lord,
until you come again.

Priest: Therefore, as we celebrate

the memorial of his Death and Resurrection,
we offer you, Lord,
the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks that you have held us worthy
to be in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray
that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your Church,
spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with Benedictour Pope
and Denis our Bishop and all the clergy.
Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of God,
with the blessed Apostles,
and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life,
and may praise and glorify you
through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through him, and with him, and in him,
O God, almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honour is yours,
for ever and ever.

People: Amen

OUR FATHER: (SPOKEN)

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Priest: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever

Priest: Lord Jesus Christ,

who said to your Apostles:
