Narrative Report

Introduction

As part of the nursing curriculum under CHED memorandum 14 (CMO 14),

nursing students must be exposed to the varied clinical areas of which neurosurgical,
orthopedic, and psychiatric wards are included. Furthermore, clinical instructors
assigned to oversee and supervise students in the different clinical areas must first and
foremost possess knowledge, skills, and attitude to effectively guide and manage the
students in their clinical exposures. Hence, clinical instructors must undergo a thorough
orientation and training to the areas to which they will be assigned.

I, as a clinical instructor of Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of

Technology (MSU-IIT), who will be overseeing level 3 nursing students particularly in
the neurosurgical ward, together with two of my colleagues have undergone a thorough
orientation on the history, VMGO, profile, policies, rules and regulations of VSMMC on
our first day of training. Succeeding days were then spent to the orthopedic and
neurosurgical wards were we had our comprehensive training as clinical instructors.

Objective of Training

At the end of our two weeks training in the orthopedic and neurosurgical ward,
we are expected to:

1. Identify the hospital policies, rules, and regulations governing the clinical
instructors, students, personnel, and patients.
2. Discuss the VMGO of the institute.
3. Identify the roles and function of both the clinical instructor and students
during clinical exposures.
4. Demonstrate enhanced knowledge, skills, and attitude in handling
neurosurgical and orthopedic patients.
5. Demonstrate clinical competence in supervising nursing students in their area
of assignment.

Methodology

First we had a comprehensive orientation as to the general policies, rules, and

regulations, VMGO, and profile of the hospital. Hand outs were given and a projector
was used during the discussion. We were then exposed to the orthopedic and
neurosurgical wards where we were oriented to the physical structure and specific
policies of the area. We were then given specific patients to handle and manage.
Nursing skills and interventions which we think are new to us or needs recall and further
enhancement were demonstrated to us first. Moreover, our queries, clarifications, and
questions were kindly answered by the hospital staffs.

Highlights of Training

The highlights of training were as follows:

 Comprehensive orientation of hospital policies, history, structure and profile.

 New and updated knowledge and information on the orthopedic and
neurosurgical nursing and medical management.
 Actual patient handling and management
 Learning and advises from hospital staffs

Assessment of Training

The training went very well since day 1. Given the fact that the training policy is
much organize and systematic. Much more, I really appreciated the knowledge of the
training head. Hospital staffs were very efficient, though managing quiet a number of
patients, they have afforded us time and guidance.

Recommendations/Suggestions

 PM shift be allowed once a week at least to experience the work load during
afternoon duties.

 Written/encoded work instruction for CIs and students per clinical area be
provided
