STATE INTRODUCTION

Hello! My name is Jazzie and I’m doing Hawaii for my state report. Before I started my

report, I knew that Hawaii is many different islands. I did research and now know that Hawaii

is located in the Pacific Ocean. It is near Alaska and Texas. It’s nickname is The Aloha State. It

got that nickname because “aloha” is the most common word used in Hawaiian language.

Hawaii

HISTORY

Captain James Cook (of the British Navy) was the first European to discover the

Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian people welcomed them warmly. After his discovery, other

people like traders and explorers sailed to the islands to trade livestock, plants, and goods for

the island’s valued sandalwood. King Kamehameha I united the islands and became their

ruling chief in 1810. After he began ruling, a time of peace came, where agriculture and trading

flourished. But the visitors carried with them diseases that sickened and killed many

Hawaiians, and the population decreased much. When Hiram Bingham came to Hawaii, he

found a much less happy culture than Captain James had discovered. Bingham and his

missionaries set up schools and translated the bible to the Hawaiian language. Protestantism

became the official religion. Roman Catholic Churches were forced of the island. Many

Hawaiians who switched to Catholicism were imprisoned. Religious freedom was eventually

established in 1839 under the rule of King Kamehameha. Hawaii became a state on on August

21, in 1959. It is the 50th state.

FACTS

The area of the state is 10,931. The state capital of Hawaii is Honolulu. It is located in the

Pacific Ocean. The current population is 1,419,561 people. It’s major colleges are University of

Hawaii (at Manoa), Brigham Young University, University of Hawaii (West Oahu). University

of Hawaii (at Hilo). My state is also sometimes called Paradise. This is because Hawaii is known

for being beautiful. It has wonderful beaches as well. Oahu is the most popular island in

Hawaii. One of the most popular beaches on Oahu is Lanikai Beach. It is rated one of the best

beaches in the world.

GEOGRAPHY

Hawaii has eight major islands; Hawaii (sometimes called Big Island), Maui, Kahoolawe,

Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. They were all formed by volcanoes rising from the

ocean floor. Big Island is the largest and youngest of the islands. It has five huge volcanoes,

including Mauna Loa and Kilauea which are some of the two most active volcanoes in the world.

The island Kauai is also called the “Garden Island” because it is covered the most in agriculture.

Hawaiian beaches are amazing if you want a vacation, because there are black, gold, red, green,

and even pink sand beaches. There are beautiful purple sunsets. There are cliffs, waterfalls and

tropical plants scattered across the land. Wainiha River, Wailuku River, and Nuuanu Stream

are some of the major rivers in Hawaii. The climate is, in summer, about 85 degrees F, and in

winter about 78 degrees F during daytime. There is mostly only summer and winter in Hawaii,

Summer stretching from May to October, and Winter from November to April.

ECONOMY

Two of Hawaii’s leading agricultural products are sugarcane and pineapple. Also,

the ground is good for planting, so there are many fruits and vegetables. Some

important crops are coffee, macadamia nuts, bananas, and other fruits. Manufactured

goods are bread, candy, dairy products, juices, and soft drinks. Some natural resources

are soil, vegetation, groundwater supply, and surrounding ocean.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

The most famous person from Hawaii is Barack Obama. He was born in

Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961. Obama went to Punahou Academy and Occidental

College. He later attended Columbia University in New York City. He is famous for becoming

the first African-American president. Barack was elected on January 20, 2009. He was the 44th

president of the USA.

The second person is Queen Lydia Liliuokalani. She was born on September 2,

1838, and died on November 11, 1917. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was

educated at the Royal School, which was run by missionaries. She is famous for being a

queen of Hawaii. She produced more than 160 songs. In January 1891, her brother (the

king) King Kalakaua died and she became the first woman queen of Hawaii.

The third person is Ellison Onizuka. He was born in Kealakekua, Kona, Hawaii,

and on June 24, 1946. He died on January 28, 1986. He is famous for being the first

person of Japanese heritage in space. He was also the first Asian-American in space.

Ellison was selected by NASA to be an astronaut candidate in 1978.

CLOSING

What I like most about my state is that it is a perfect place for a vacation. It has beautiful

oceans, amazing beaches, and it looks wonderful with all it’s agriculture. I would love to visit

Hawaii, but I wouldn’t like going to college there, because I’m already planning to go to UOP.

Three interesting things about my state are that there are beaches with sand that isn’t always

yellow. Some beaches there have green sand! Another thing is that there are many different

festivals, which they celebrate by dancing and eating meals. Finally, it has more than 8.6

million tourists coming to Hawaii each year! That’s a lot of people!
