DATES OF DELIVERY: Tuesday, April 3, 2018
FROM 10:50 pm TO 11:50/55 pm
UNIT TITLE: enVisionMATH Topic 11: Two-Dimensional Shapes and Their Attributes
STANDARD/S ADDRESSED ( _x_PA CORE: __ PA ACADEMIC STANDARDS)
CC.2.3.3.A.1 Identify, compare, and classify shapes and their attributes.

LESSON TOPIC: Lines, Line Segments, Right Angles

LESSON OBJECTIVE/S
AS A RESULT OF THIS LESSON, THE STUDENT/S WILL IDENTIFY AND DRAW DIFFERENT LINES, LINE SEGMENTS, AND RIGHT ANGLES.

STEPS OF PLANNED SEQUENCE ESTIMATED MATERIALS/

DIRECT OF TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES TIME TLA
INSTRUCTION PER TLA
(GAGNE)
1 GAIN 1. After the brain break, tell students to write down today’s homework in their -Homework
ATTENTION homework chart: Practice 11-1 WS. (Enrichment 11-1 for CM, EF, HS, BK) Chart
-Whiteboards
Then tell students to bring their whiteboards and marker to the carpet for math -Markers
using “Carpet, carpet 1, 2, 3!” When they get to the carpet, tell them to keep their -Computer
whiteboards and markers on the floor until I say to use them. -Promethean
Board
2 STATE 2. Today we will learn how to identify line segments, different types of lines, and -Flipchart
OBJECTIVE right angles.

3 FACILITATE 3. Lines are everywhere in our world. Turn and tell a partner where you may see 2-3 minutes
RECALL lines and line segments/parts of lines in the world around you? (Answers may
include lines in the center of the road, swimming pool lane ropes, lines on a
soccer/baseball/football field, etc.)

4 PRESENT 4. Next Slide- Vocabulary to know: For each of the vocab words and models on 10 minutes
NEW this slide, assign the following motions and definitions- model the motions and
INFORMATIO break up saying the definitions into parts when having students repeat them back.
N
Ask students to stand up and take out their mirrors.
● Punch the air (carefully!) while saying “point”. A point is an exact position
in space.
● Fly out your arms to the sides (kind of like a baseball player saying safe?)
while saying “line”. A line continues endlessly in two directions (do a little
side to side move as you say “two directions”). The tips of your fingers are
like two arrows pointing on and on in both directions.
● Now, change your arrows/hands to fists and hold them straight out again.
A line segment begins at one point (do a mini punch with left hand) and
ends at another point (do another mini punch with right hand).
● Now, take your arms and cross them like an x in front of you. These are
intersecting lines.
● Separate your arms and lay them on top of each other. Parallel lines
never cross. (shake head while saying this)
**Have students sit down.
Next Slide- Parts of an Angle: Have each student hold up an L with one hand. An
angle is made up of different parts. Two rays (point to each finger- thumb and
pointer) meet at an endpoint (draw a circle with your other hand where the
rays/fingers meet). This forms an angle! What kind of angle is this on the board?
(accept answers then move the box to reveal the answer- right angle and the
definition). Reiterate that right angles have a square corner and point out the
square that is on the angle on the board. Use the joke to discuss that right angles
measure 90 degrees.

Ask: Where do you see right angles in the classroom? (accept answers...corners of
windows, corners at top of door, etc.).

5. Next Slide- Guided Practice: Students will draw the 7 terms on their 5 minutes
5 PROVIDE whiteboards (do number 1, then check, number 2, then check, etc.) and then put
GUIDED whiteboards and markers down.
PRACTICE
Next 2 Slides: Find and circle lines, line segments, intersecting lines, right angles,
etc. in the pictures (railroad track Slide 1, Eagles football field Slide 2). Select
students to come up to the board and do this.

6. **Pull up the Guided Math Rotations Google Doc on the Promethean Board 45 minutes -Guided Math
6 PROVIDE and explain the groups/activities** (15 for Google Doc
INDEPENDENT each -Math Book &
PRACTICE Math with Teacher: Students will work on the carpet with Miss Smith to complete rotation) Notebook
pages 276 and 277 in their math book. This will be done in their math notebook. -Toss and
Talk
At Seat: Students will work at the back table to play the Toss and Talk game and -Street Map
complete the Street Map worksheet and Geometry drawing. WS
-Chromebook
Technology: Students will complete the Pearson 11-1 Quiz, BrainPop assignment,
and play the online math games posted in Google Classroom.

Assign a student to set up the class monster to monitor noise level during groups.
Tell class that Group 1 will meet with Miss Smith on the carpet first with their
math book and math notebook. Group 2 will do Technology, and Group 3 will do
At Seat first. Give students 1 minute to be where they need to be with whatever
materials they need for the first station. At the end of each time, students will
switch to the next station as listed on the board.

7. Discuss/Review with students during Math with Teacher time; check for
7 PROVIDE understanding.
FEEDBACK/
DISCUSSION
8. Informally assess for student understanding during the flipchart/whole group
8 CONDUCT activities in the beginning (check student whiteboards when they are held up).
ASSESSMENT Monitor math at seat assignments and check students’ worksheet for
completion/accuracy and understanding. Check the Pearson Quiz grade online to
formatively check for understanding. Check homework tomorrow.

9. Tomorrow we will learn about polygons.

9 SCHEDULE
ELABORATION ** CLOSURE- CHECK TIME- NEED TO BE CLEANED UP AND IN SEATS BY 11:55:
When students are lined up for lunch, have them show you, using the motions
from before, the different terms: line, line segment, point, parallel lines,
intersecting lines, right angle.

ACCOMMODATIONS
STUDENTS ACCOMMODATION
-Leveled math games are listed in the Guided Math Google Doc (easy, harder, and challenge levels), which is posted in
the students’ Math Google Classroom.
-The guided math groups are leveled (Group 3/Green- High, Group 2/Yellow- Average, Group 1/Red- Low)
-Based on teacher observations and formative assessment (Pearson quiz and seat work), determine if
reteaching/additional practice needs to be given tomorrow.

**H (CM, These students will continue working with Mrs. Rissell on using FlipGrid. They are learning how to respond to each
EF, HS) other using the grid.

Midweek, they will try out Ozobot and the Geometry task cards.

A Lesson as is.

SELF-CRITIQUE/REFLECTION (OVERLEAF OR ATTACHMENT)

A successful lesson! The Whole Brain motions were perfect in this lesson and greatly enhanced student engagement and retention
through repetition and movement. I am enjoying thinking about how to incorporate movement and Whole Brain philosophy in my
lessons. Based on the results of the Pearson 11-1 quiz, students appear to be demonstrating understanding of these concepts.

*Note: The right angle joke was a great addition to my flipchart and should be used again in the future! (Why does a right angle turn
on the air condition? Because it was 90 degrees!)

*My high group is doing well with Flipgrid, Mrs. Rissell reported. I am excited to be implementing this technology platform in the
classroom and am eager for the entire class to participate.
