You can touch history in the narrow
wynds and cobbled streets of
Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and Old
Town. Then walk through beautiful

than two centuries old!) in all its
neoclassical grandeur. Or board a
hop-on, hop-off bus for a unique
view of the city’s finest architectural
and historic attractions.
In half an hour you can disappear
into the heart of Holyrood Park and
feel like the city is a million miles
away.
Remember your earplugs if you’re
planning on hearing the One
o’clock Gun at Edinburgh Castle – it
has been surprising visitors nearly
every day since 1861.
Gather a picnic of local delights
from Scotland’s largest farmers’
market in the shadow of Edinburgh
Castle. Then eat it sitting in a grove
of giant sequoia trees in the Royal
Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
East Lothian
Fancy a flutter? Trot on over to
Musselburgh Racecourse which
also has a 9-hole golf course in the
middle. If you head further east you
can go beach combing at Gullane,
Yellowcraigs or North Berwick. Or
get your adrenaline pumping with
watersports at Belhaven beach.

There are staggering architectural attractions on almost every street corner. Gothic monuments,
classical squares, rugged fortifications, labyrinthine Medieval lanes, neoclassical art galleries –
they all have their home here and are ready for you to enjoy.
Edinburgh
Step out of Waverley railway
station and you can instantly see
why Edinburgh is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. The spectacular skyline
of the Old Town running up to the
castle dominates the view. With just
a few more minutes’ exploring you’ll
be serenaded by the beauty of the
neoclassical New Town.
A walk along the Royal Mile is
a must. This mile-long street is
bookended by a rugged medieval
fortress perched atop an extinct
volcano, Edinburgh Castle, and
a stately royal residence, the
Palace of Holyroodhouse. This
royal residence is framed by the
spectacular backdrop of Arthur’s
Seat, an ancient volcano.

All aboard! You’ll get a taste of
the high life on The Royal Yacht
Britannia, the former floating royal
residence which served HM The
Queen for over 40 years. The yacht
is now berthed at Ocean Terminal
in Leith.
Did you know Edinburgh has
two castles? The 15th century
Craigmillar Castle, 3 miles south
east of the city centre, is quiet,
beautifully preserved and has a
fascinating history.
East Lothian
Take a woodland stroll round one
of Scotland’s only two lakes (all the
other thousands of such bodies
of water are known as ‘lochs’) at
Pressmennan, near Stenton.
With beautiful views over to the
Bass Rock on the outskirts of
North Berwick is Tantallon Castle,
a stunning fortification, once a
stronghold of the Red Douglas family.
It’s easy to imagine clashing knights
and joyous feasts at the beautiful ruin
of Hailes Castle, near East Linton.
Midlothian
The Da Vinci Code fan? It’s intricate
carvings add to the mystical aura
of the beautiful Rosslyn Chapel.
The 15th century seat of medieval
workship even had a strong role
in Dan Brown’s bestseller The Da
Vinci Code. Once you’ve explored
this facinating chapel, head for
the atmospheric Roslin Glen – a
dramatic wooded gorge which is
perfect for an afternoon walk.

West Lothian
For beauty and history, you
can’t beat Linlithgow Palace.
Three monarchs were born here,
including Mary, Queen of Scots. And
it’s certainly a place fit for royalty,
with rolling parkland and a serene
loch right on the doorstep.

To step even further back in time,
climb up Cairnpapple Hill on the
outskirts of Bathgate. Our Stone
Age ancestors were holding rituals
here as far back as 3,500 BC. It’s
certainly an impressive spot, with
spectacular views that can stretch
as far as the Isle of Arran.

major reason for that. With major galleries and museums, theatre, comedy and every form of music
from opera to late-night rock-clubs, it’s easy to get your cultural fix in Edinburgh & The Lothians.

Edinburgh
Welcome to the festival capital
of the world. Edinburgh doesn’t
waste a single second in getting
the party started – every year
kicks off with the world-famous
Hogmanay celebrations, one of the
world’s biggest street parties. The
fun takes a literary turn in January
with Burns Night. Awake your inner
pagan at the Beltane Fire Festival
then expand your mind at the
International Science Festival, both
in April. In June, the Film festival is
here, then its Jazz and Blues in July.
The largest arts festival in the world
takes over the whole city in August.
Somehow we find time to take a
breather before we party again on
St Andrew’s Day in autumn, then the
spectacular Winter Festivals take us

Edinburgh made such a name
for itself in the Enlightenment in
the 18th century that it earned
the nickname the ‘Athens of

From climbing, skiing and surfing to cycling, golf and walking, Edinburgh & The Lothians is your

Watersports
Head east to the beaches at
Longniddry and Gullane for first-
class windsurfing and kite surfing,
or paddle out with the surfers at
Dunbar.
Sea kayaking and sufing are fun
watersports – and amazing ways
to go sight-seeing. Tantallon Castle
looks awesome from the ocean. You
can kayak or canoe along the Union
Canal into the heart of Edinburgh.

Adventures, in Dunbar.

Walking
In East Lothian, uncover stunning
countryside and coastline beauty
along the recently extended John
Muir Way, which stretches from
Helensburgh in the west to Dunbar,
the great man’s birthplace, on the
east coast. Find great things to
see and do at Beecraigs Country
Park in West Lothian and enjoy a
relaxing stroll around the loch. For
a more challenging walk, take to
the hills and explore the Pentland
Hills Regional Park, and enjoy
the panoramic views across the
wonderful wild landscape. Back
in the city, scale the imposing,
iconic Arthur’s Seat, an extinct
volcano with stunning views across
Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth
from atop, or take a walk along the
Water of Leith which runs through
the heart of the city, passing the
Scottish Gallery of Modern Art and
the Royal Botanic Garden among
other attractions.
Cycling
Enjoy a family cycle through
East Lothian by following one of
five leisurely routes or, for a bit
more adventure, take in some
of the off-road paths. Maps can

be downloaded from www.
visiteastlothian.org. In West
Lothian, cycle the Linlithgow to
Blackness route, which offers
picturesque views over the Firth
of Forth and the Ochil Hills. And in
Midlothian explore Vogrie Country
Park for a fun-filled day out for all
the family. For more of a test, try
the Bathgate route, which takes
you over 28 miles into the bonnie
Bathgate Hills. The Broxburn to
East Calder route is perfect for a
short ride at just 14 miles long and
takes in the peaceful Union Canal.
Enjoy the popular North Esk Cycle
Loop which starts in the beautiful
village of Rosewell. This rural route
has only a few short sections on
the main roads and features many
attractions, pubs and tearooms.
In Edinburgh city, popular cycling
routes include the Union Canal
Path, Water of Leith Walkway or
Innocent Cycle Path – all easy
routes with great scenery.
Golf
East Lothian is Scotland’s Golf
Coast. Tee off at one of many
courses that the area is blessed
with, including Gullane Golf
Course, which hosted the Aberdeen
Asset Management Scottish Open
Cycling in Inverleith Park, Edinburgh
2015, and follow in the footsteps
of golfing greats at other Open
championship courses including
Muirfield. For a historic game, enjoy
a round at Musselburgh Old Course,
one of the oldest surviving courses
in the world, while Leith Links in
Edinburgh is where the earliest
recorded rules of golf were drawn
up in 1744. In West Lothian, treat
yourself at the luxurious Dalmahoy
Hotel and Country Club and
play the fantastic East and West
courses, or in Midlothian, test your
swing at one of seven golf courses
including the Melville Golf Centre
and Kings Acre at Lasswade. Enjoy
a challenging round with great
views of the Firth of Forth at the
Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society
on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The
attractive parkland course has been
a regional qualifying venue for The
Open.
Rugby
Visit BT Murrayfield Stadium, where
you can join the crowds to cheer
on Scotland’s national rugby team
as they compete in international
competitions, including the RBS
Six Nations. Edinburgh Rugby are
based here too and stadium tours
are available on request.

Dunbar coastline offers fantastic views
Stroll along the beach in the morning, tramp across moors in the afternoon and relax in the
evening in a riverside garden. You can explore an exciting mix of wild and green spaces in
Edinburgh & The Lothians. And perhaps meet a few furred and feathered friends, too.
Wildlife
Bass Rock is a colossal, sheer-side
volcanic plug 2 miles off the coast
of North Berwick in East Lothian.
It’s the perfect home for seabirds,
including puffins, cormorants and
guillemots too, with over 150,000
birds flocking there every year
during the breeding season.
Get up close to this unique bird-city
on a boat tour, or watch the live
webcam feed at the award-winning
Scottish Seabird Centre. Watch out
for sleepy seals, too.
Head inland to the slopes of the
low Lammermuir hills and you
might see roe deer, red squirrels,
buzzards, sparrow hawks, short-

eared owls, adders and many more
elusive creatures.
Country parks
As you walk or cycle through
Beecraigs Country Park in West
Lothian, keep an eye out for the
park’s herds of red deer, highland
cattle and Hebridean sheep. You
can stay in a lodge and try a little
fishing. Children will flip for the
adventure playground.
Roe deer, foxes, heron, water
voles and bats all love Polkemmet
Country Park near Whitburn, and
you will too. Lesser spotted golfers
can often be seen on the park’s gem
of a 9-hole course. While you’re in
West Lothian, stretch your legs on
the riverside walks at Almondell &
Calderwood Country Park.
The John Muir Country Park has
some of the most spectacular East
Lothian coastline and is a haven
for wildlife. It is named after the
local nature-loving lad who later
emigrated to the USA and helped
found America’s National Parks and
the famous Sierra Club. Start from
Dunbar, his birthplace, and within
minutes you’ll be on a clifftop trail
with views across the sea to the
Bass Rock.
Just how long is the world’s longest
herbaceous border? Pop in to the
beautiful gardens of Dirleton Castle
near North Berwick and find out for
yourself!

Did you
know?
A group of puffins
is called a circus.
Walk just a few minutes into the
Pentland Hills Regional Park and
you will completely forget that
Edinburgh lies just over that hill.
You may have seen the beautiful
Rosslyn Chapel in The Da
Vinci Code, but did you know
it’s surrounded by nature’s
masterpiece, Roslin Glen? A river
threads its way through cliffs below
the ruins of Roslin Castle with
Wallace’s Cave set high up in the
rock face overlooking the glen.
For a family day out try Dalkeith
Country Park. Kids can go wild in
the brilliant Fort Douglas, the newly
furbished adventure playground.
Parks and gardens
Need a little escape to nature from
your sightseeing and shopping?
Edinburgh has several such
sanctuaries. Beautiful Princes
NATURE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS 11
Street Gardens slumber under the
watchful eye of the castle. Rearing
over the Scottish Parliament and
Holyrood Palace is the volcanic
rock of Arthur’s Seat which you can
climb for commanding views across
Edinburgh. You can also stroll
through the landscapes of Asia,
America and Africa thanks to the
exotic plants of the Royal Botanic
Garden.
The Meadows and Inverleith Park
are two more beautiful green
spaces to enjoy in the city. Even
residents forget sometimes that
Edinburgh has its own beach –
head to Portobello and stroll along
the promenade.
When does nature become art?
You’ll find the answer (or maybe
more questions!) at Jupiter Artland
sculpture park in the grounds of
Bonnington House, just outside
Edinburgh.
The charming Inveresk Lodge
Garden in East Lothian is a
delightful terraced garden and a
year-round oasis of calm. From
a National Collection of shrub
roses to four impressive 400-year-
old yew trees and much more.
Malleny Garden in Balerno, on the
outskirts of Edinburgh, provides the
perfect spot for contemplation and
relaxation amid beautiful plants
and flowers.
Five Sisters Zoo, West Calder
Highlights
They don’t do much, but they
are very beautiful to look at
– the UK’s only giant pandas
are at Edinburgh Zoo. The
daily penguin parade is also a
must see (those penguins do
love showing off).
Yellowcraig Local Nature
Reserve in East Lothian will
inspire you with its beautiful
forest, beach and grassland.
It certainly inspired Robert
Louis Stevenson – he based
his famous Treasure Island on
Fidra Island which you can
see from the beach here.
There are several more islands
off the coast of Edinburgh
& The Lothians, and little
Inchcolm Island even has
its own ancient abbey. The
best way to see it is to hop
aboard one of the boat tours
(such as The Maid of the Forth
and Forth Tours) at South
Queensferry.
Don’t miss...
Walking out along a tidal
causeway to Cramond Island.
Then return for an ice cream
and a walk along the beach.
Stepping inside the world’s
longest-running butterfly
house at Edinburgh Butterfly
& Insect World, near Lasswade
and you’ll be amazed at the
gorgeous creatures fluttering
around you.

There’s a seafood aficionado
in every family, so you should
take them down to Leith. There
are more awesome gastropubs

In the late 18th century the
residents of Edinburgh decided
that their medieval labyrinth of
a city wasn’t amazing enough,
so they built a magnificent new
neoclassical city just across the
valley. Today these Old and New
towns both have UNESCO World
Heritage status for their historic
importance. You’ll find amazing
buildings on every corner, twisting
cobbles streets with surprising
views, world-class museums and
elegantly symmetrical Georgian
squares.
Hire a bike and ride out west
on safe cycle tracks to see the
three celebrated bridges over the
Firth of Forth. There is an iconic
bridge from each of the last three
centuries. The original Forth Bridge
was completed in 1890 to carry
the railway. In 1964 the Forth Road
Bridge replaced a centuries-old
ferry. And 2017 is the opening year
of the new Queensferry Crossing,
the UK’s tallest bridge at 207 m
high.
The Romans built a fort in Cramond
around AD 140, during the
construction of the Antonine Wall
across Scotland. Today you can see
the fort’s footprint in the grounds
of Cramond Kirk. And if you visit the
Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh
you can see the Cramond Lioness,
a Roman sculpture found in the
riverbed near the fort.
Yosemite National Park in the
USA owes its beauteous existence
to John Muir from Dunbar. You
can follow in the footsteps of this
world-famous naturalist by walking
the John Muir Way, a 134-mile route
that runs from his birthplace along
the glorious East Lothian coast, into
Edinburgh and on to the west coast
at Helensburgh.

Highlights
As picnic spots go, Traprain
Law in East Lothian takes
some beating. This 221 m
high hill was the site of a
huge fortification built by
the Votadini tribe in the Iron
Age. You can see for miles
up here, out over the North
Sea and west to Edinburgh.
Just watch out that the wild
ponies who live here now
don’t pinch your sandwiches.
The Scottish Parliament
Building at the foot of the
Royal Mile is a spectacular
recent addition to our social
heritage. But Parliament
House, 10 minutes’ walk up
the hill, is the oldest purpose-
built parliamentary building
in the British Isles. It was
completed in 1639 and now
houses the Supreme Courts.

Tantallon Castle in East
Lothian could hardly be more
dramatically sited – it clings
to a clifftop overlooking the
crashing waves.
Pack a hat for your boat trip
to the Bass Rock. This was
the lonely home of Christian
hermit St Baldred in AD 600,
but it’s now the world‘s
largest colony of Northern
gannets (150,000 live here).
Make your move to the Lewis
Chessmen in the National
Museum of Scotland. These
quirky little characters are
from the finest medieval
chess set in existence. They
were dug up from a sand
bank on the Isle of Lewis in
1831 and are carved from
walrus ivory.
Linlithgow Palace in West
Lothian was where Mary,
Queen of Scots made her
entrance into this life. She
was born within the palace’s
mighty walls in 1542. If
you’re visiting the palace in
July, check to see if jousting
is taking place – the palace
grounds have hosted this
thrilling event for several
summers now.

the Festival will be celebrating its
70th birthday and there will be

This started in the very same year
when eight smaller theatrical
companies who weren’t part of

attitude turned the Fringe into the
world’s largest arts festival, and
it now has around 2,500 shows in
every possible genre. It’s still the
home of the quirky one-man plays

the Fringe starts. Not that it matters.
All you need to do is wander the
streets, pop into a café or bar and
you’ll soon be tempted by more
incredible shows that you could ever
hope to see in one lifetime.
The Royal Edinburgh Military
Tattoo
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
is another summer must-see. Set
against the spectacular backdrop
of the floodlit Edinburgh Castle,
almost a thousand musicians,
pipers, drummers, singers and
dancers from around the globe
perform on the Esplanade. This
unforgettable spectacle is brought
to an emotional and poignant
close each evening as a lone piper,
high on the castle ramparts, plays
a haunting lament, followed by a
wonderful fireworks display.

they all fit into one city in one year. Summer is home to the world’s largest arts festival and our
Hogmanay party is a New Year celebration that you have to be part of at least once in your life.
But whenever you come you’ll find there is a fun and friendly festival going on somewhere in
Edinburgh & The Lothians.

Scotland’s best-loved poet Robert
Burns made his name when he came
to Edinburgh. Join in the city’s Burns
Night celebrations on 25 January,
his birthday.
The yearly tradition of Six Nations
Rugby kicks off at Murrayfield
in February, with the matches
continuing into March.
When spring arrives, you can enjoy a
flourishing celebration of traditional
music at Ceilidh Culture.
What’s the best way to toss a caber?
You can find out at Bathgate in
May at the West Lothian Highland
Games. You can watch the flying feet
of Highland dancers, as well as the
muscle men in action in the heavy
athletics and the hill race.
Who knew that puffins have their
own festival? Well, they do. These
colourful, characterful birds are
celebrated for 10 days every May
at Puffin Fest! Head to the Scottish
Seabird Centre at North Berwick
to see them in action and for some
high-flying events.
From puffins to puffing – you’ll
see cyclists pushing themselves
up Edinburgh’s hills throughout
the year but in June there is also
a special Edinburgh Festival of
Cycling. Why not hire a bike and
join in?
Catch some culture by the coast in
June, with East Lothian’s Fringe by
the Sea festival in North Berwick
and the unique 3 Harbours Arts
Festival in Cockenzie, Port Seton
and Prestonpans.
