Career Episode: Crest Academies, Brent, London May,2011 - Date IEng MCIBSE
Competence
Objective
Client: Brent Council
Architect: Capita Symonds
Value:
Sector: Education
Role: Electrical Engineer
The Crest Academy project consists of the construction of Four new buildings: - the Girls and
Boys buildings made up of four storey buildings each. The other two buildings are the Shared
Facilities buildings with Sixth form units which are six floors high. The different buildings are
linked together by PODs and Atrium. The project is to be developed in phases so as to
ensure the continual operation of the school during the construction period. The first phase
will consist of the decanting of part of the school into a temporary building and the
demolishing of part of the existing school for the construction of the new buildings. The
second phase will be the construction of the new buildings while the third phase will be the
demolishing of the rest of the existing school buildings for the landscape works.

We have been appointed as the Mechanical and Electrical Service Engineers (M&E)
Consultant by Emcor Engineering Service Limited to develop the project from Detail design
through to tender Stage. The Stage C and D designs were developed by Capita Symonds M &
E Service’s department.

In order for a smooth transfer of design responsibilities from Capita Symonds to Edc, the
Lead Engineer and I attended series of meetings with the client and the Capita Symonds AI2,AM2
M & E Service Engineers. We discussed, reviewed the current M & E package, clarified BMI
queries and made notes on client’s requirements to assist us with the development of the
detailed design. I was responsible for the production and the distribution of the agendas and D1
minutes for all meetings.

The project is currently over budget and Edc has been given the design responsibilities to
produce tender pricing package for the different appointed suppliers to provide their
quotations.

As the assigned Electrical Engineer I produced the layout drawings and tender pricing AI2,BI1, BM2
specifications for the Fire Alarm systems, Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV), Access AM2
Control, Intruder Alarm, lighting schedules, Disabled Alarm & Refuge system and Low Voltage
(LV) Systems by utilizing the ITT (Invitation to Tender) Submission document from the client. I
researched, discussed with other Electrical Engineers, read and compared manufacturers AI1,AM1
catalogues and brochures in order to specify the optimum, sustainable and cost effective
systems for the different electrical services

I ensured the specifications and drawings complied with the Building Regulations, Building E1
Bulletins, British Standards, CIBSE GUIDES and other requirements.

To meet the company’s ISO 9001 standard, I organized design review meetings with two CI4,
other Electrical Engineers for design quality assessment checks and evaluation of my design CM4
before final issue. I did an oral presentation using a set of designed drawings and a flipchart. BI2,BM1,D2

I was responsible for allocating resources and supervising the CAD technician assigned to C1,C3
this project. I reviewed and ensured the 2D AutoCAD drawings were designed in accordance
with the marked up drawings. I monitored and analyzed the progress of the CAD technicians CI2
against the scheduled work load in view of the tender package deadlines.
On completion of all the drawings and specification for the services, I issued my drawings D1,D3
and specification by email to the Emcor Engineering Services for the tender pricing.

I used Microsoft excel spreadsheets to analyze and calculate the detailed load estimate for BI1,BM2
the new buildings by applying unit load (Watts/m²) in accordance with BSRIA Rule of Thumb
Document 2011 . I applied individual diversity factors to the lighting, Small power and
Mechanical load, and also applied a power factor of 0.95 with an overall diversity factor of

0.9 to the whole site. I allowed for 20% future expansion for the site and made allowance for
lifts and external lighting power requirements.

I then presented my calculation results to the design team in order to progress with the
application for the power supply required for the site and produced the project risk register E2
for the CDM coordinator before detailed design commenced.

I visited the existing school to conduct a condition survey of the existing ICT system and also B3,
held an ICT meeting with the ICT Director for the school to review the temporary ICT D1,D3
requirement for the continual operation of the school during the construction phase. The site
visit assisted me in producing my enabling works design for the temporary school ICT set up.

I organized meeting with the different Tenderers in our office, who presented their tender B3,CM2
quotations which I analyzed, reviewed and asked questions, a Senior Engineer was present
at the meeting. I prepared and issued report to the client advising him of my observations in
line with the information received in addition with my recommendations.

I am currently developing the Preliminary Stage lighting design for the Academies and AI1, AM1
working closely with Garrabridge lighting manufacturer and reading technical journals
relating to sustainability and Carbon reduction so as to design the most energy efficient and
sustainable buildings with minimum cost implications.

Career Episode: Clarence Lane, Roehampton May,2011 – Date IEng MCIBSE

Competence
Objective
Client: Hausmann Hughes Ltd
Architect: Assael Architects
Value:
Sector: Residential
Role: Electrical Engineer
The Clarence Lane Project is made up of two blocks of flats: a private block of flats and an
affordable block of flats. The Private block of flats consists of 3 Number 1 Bedroom flats, 5
Number 2 Bedroom flats and 2 Number 3 bedroom flats.
The affordable flats consist of 9 Number 1 Bedroom flats, Residents Meeting room and a
support office. The development is to comply with Life Time Homes Standards.
The external works which includes the car park & pathway lighting and landscape
engineering also forms an important part of this project.

As the Electrical Engineer on this development I designed the electrical services from AI2, AM2
scheme design through to tender in accordance with the clients’ brief and also liaised with
the Project Architect. I will also be responsible for the construction stage design.

I liaised with public utility authorities for the application and provision of incoming services, D1,D3
such as electricity, water, gas, telecommunication etc, on the site. I provided them with the
necessary information and documents required to assist them in issuing quotations for the
different supplies to the site. I created a spreadsheet with traffic light system to keep track BI1
and record of the applications.

The client agreed to exclude terrestrial or sky dish on the roof of the two buildings during
the planning application stage in order to facilitate the approval of the planning scheme,
although there is the need for SKY facilities on site. The client informed us on the planning
application conditions and required an alternative solution to the problem. I arranged a
meeting with the different Television providers to discuss the alternative method which D1,D3
could be used to provide the required services. After much discussion and deliberation with
the service providers and personal research, I concluded that virgin cable TV was the best AI1,AM1
option to meet the client’s requirements. The virgin services will be able to transmit almost
all of the SKY channels at a cheaper cost. The client was impressed with the facts I
presented to him from my research and satisfied with the final decision.

In designing the lighting scheme for the development I utilized T5 fluorescent luminaires AM2,BI2,E3
which consumes 75% to 85% less electricity than the incandescent lamps and last 9 to 13
times longer.
For the Private block of flats the client required specific decorative and aesthetic effect
luminaires. To design this, I carried out a search for companies that specialize in AI1,AM1
decorative and aesthetic lighting. I also read catalogue and magazines from our library and
searched on the internet before choosing the lighting types, I liaised with the Architects to
design the Private lighting scheme. I ensured the lighting system proposed still complied to
the Building Regulation Part L1A (Conservation of Fuel and Power in new dwelling) in terms E3
of using luminaires with energy efficient lamps and providing adequate lighting controls.

For the small power and ancillary services design, I used my experience, expertise,
research, client brief and the Rule of Thumb document from BSRIA to provide the required
quantity of power sockets whilst giving the end user the flexibility without providing
excessive quantities in each unit. I provided power supply to the Mobility hoist and wheel E1,E2
chair charger and also specified that all switches should be at the DDA compliant height
and socket visual appearance to part M.

To prevent access by unauthorized persons to the block of flats I specified a vandal proof E3
door entry system with proximity card reader with provision made for an Audio/ Visual entry
phone system within each flats. The main access control equipment I positioned in the
support office for monitoring.

Engineering Practice Report

I worked closely with the Mechanical and Public Health Engineers within the company to
coordinate the services within each flat and landlord areas in both buildings. I also
organized internal design review meetings to establish the locations of boilers, risers, flues, AI2,BM2
Ventilation and soil pipes. I became more knowledgeable and understood more about the
Mechanical and Public Health services by discussing their system and services in detail BM1
during these meeting and I carried out further personal studies for more information and AI1,AM1
further understanding.

On completion of all the drawings and specification for the Electrical services, I issued the D3
entire documents for tender via email. The project Manager David Mellis appointed the
contractors for the project and a meeting was organized which I chaired and also introduce B3
the contractors to the projects.

I am currently attending weekly Design and Client meetings at the Architects office, the AM2
meetings are mostly with the sub- contractors, Architect, Landscape Architects, Structural
Engineers and the Service Engineers to resolve queries before the Construction Stage B3
commences. I present a written progress report to my project director after each

Career Episode: Dartford Bridge and Community Campus, Kent May,2007 – October,2009 IEng MCIBSE
Competence
Objective
Client: Kent County Council
Architect: Hazel McCormack Young (HMY)
Value:
Sector: Education
Role: Intermediate Electrical Engineer
The project consists of a mixed Community development which comprises of a Primary School,
Community Learning and Youth Centre Located south of Dartford Bridge. The campus is part of
the Bridge Development in Dartford and is a major mixed-use regeneration project in the Thames
Gateway. The campus is at the heart of the new community providing a learning environment,
health centre, crèche and other community care facilities. The building achieved BREEAM for
Schools ‘Very Good’ rating. It is predominantly naturally ventilated with high levels of insulation
and high-performance glazing. The central atrium acts as a buffer space to the perimeter
classrooms, central reception area and has an ETFE roof which provides good natural daylight
internally within the building.

I undertook the design of the electrical services from scheme design through Tender and
Construction stage, ensuring that the principles of design were in accordance with the British
Standards, Building Bulletins, CIBSE Guides and Client’s brief. I was presented with the electrical E1
services drawings and was given a brief introduction to the project. I reviewed the drawings and BI1
familiarized myself with the project. I planned the design program with the senior engineer and
agreed to have regular fortnightly meetings to review my drawings for the duration of the design. B3,C3

I reviewed and revised the calculated electrical load in accordance with the revised Schedule of
Areas as issued by the Architects and also evaluate the initially applied electrical supply to EDF for
the school to ascertain whether it was sufficient for the updated areas. During the design process
I always read manufacturers magazines, electrical information technology or mechanical AI1,AM1
information to keep abreast with the latest technologies.

I developed the LV (Low Voltage) Schematic diagram for the project and critically positioned AI2,AM2,BI1,
distribution boards, fire alarm, security and Controls panels considering the Voltage drop limit. I BM2
adhered to the requirements the relevant British Standards. The wiring was designed to BS 7671: E1
IEE Wiring Regulation.

As part of the office procedures all designs had to be backed by software calculations for quality CI4,CM4
assurance purposes. I was booked on the Amtech ProDesign Training course to gain knowledge in E4
the AMTECH software programme. I then completed my cable sizing by inputting my manually
calculated cable sizes into the LV schematic model I had generated with AMTECH software. BI1,BM2

I specified all the luminaires for the interior areas and external lighting spaces such as the car AM2,E3
park and perimeter lighting utilizing energy efficient luminaires, I performed all the lighting BI1,BM2
calculation using the Dialux lighting software to confirm the number of luminaires and to achieve
the required maintained lux levels for the respective areas as recommended in the CIBSE Code E1
for lighting and Emergency Lighting to BS 5266.

The electrical services scheme for the project was designed adhering to the Building Regulations E1,E3
2000Part (AD L2A): Conservation of Fuel and Power in New Building other than dwellings,
enabling the building to achieve BREEAM for Schools ‘Very Good’ rating.

I designed the fire Detection and Alarm system for the school to category L1 of BS 5389: Full fire AI2,AM2
detection and alarm coverage in all areas and the system was connected the BT Redcare. I also
produced the detailed fire alarm schematic as there was no fire alarm specialist on board in this
project.I contacted fire alarm specialist, researched and issued my design to be reviewed by a D1,D3
senior engineer during the design process.

Prior to the issue of the Tender and Construction Issue drawings and specifications, the design
team involved in the Dartford Hub project held a design review meeting with the Associate

Engineering Practice Report

Director in charge of this project, senior engineers and other engineers, this is to ensure the BM1,C14
designs comply with the Quality Assurance policy of the company. During the meeting I presented CM4
my design scheme for review, comments and questioning by the selected board.

The client appointed specialists consultants for the specialist elements of the project. These
areas were the ICT classrooms, Sensory Room, Access control, Lift and kitchen. I communicated D1,D3
with the specialist consultants through emails and telephone calls to obtain their input and BM2
feedback to produce an integrated design. I checked, commented on the set of drawings and CM2
specifications issued and ensured the proposed systems are as per client requirements and there
were no discrepancies. I kept copies of all documents and information received in the appropriate
company’s folders system.

I attended site meetings during the construction stage and also resolve site issues. I regularly B3
communicated with the client and architect regarding any changes in the design and the effect on DI,D3
our design. I supervised the works on site to ensure that it was completed according to our design
and specification.

I reviewed and ensured all submission of technical documents from the electrical contractor were CM2
as per our electrical specification. I also took charge of responding to RFI (Request For
Information) from architects and contractors.
I kept a spreadsheet record in the form of traffic light system to keep track of all received, BI1
commented and issued documents.

In order to visit the site and to meet the contractors’ Health and Safety (H&S) policy for the site. I E2
studied the H & S manual for site and took the H & S standard examination which I passed and
applied for the CSCS card. I had an awareness of the Health and Safety issues on site, I therefore
ensured that my colleagues and I wore the full safety gear whenever we visited site.

I went on site and carried out initial and final site inspection and produced report which I issued B3,C1
to the contractors on site to carry out the actions on the report before hand over. In addition I
witnessed the Testing and commissioning of the Fire Alarm systems and Lighting control systems. CI2

Client: Holburne Museum Trust
Architect: Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCB Studios)
Value:
Sector: Heritage
Role: Assistant Electrical Engineer

The project consists of the construction of a new extension and refurbishment of the
existing museum building in Bath.
The existing building is made up of a basement area with three floors above ground. The
basement houses the main plant areas as well as toilets and storage areas. The above
ground floor houses gallery spaces, with additional lecture space and offices.
The new extension consists of a basement area with 4 storey glass / ceramic clad building
interconnected to the rear of the existing museum. The new extension contains an
Archive/Library, Picture Store and a kitchen in the basement area, a café / shop area at
ground floor with gallery space on the floor above.
As well as within the basement, plants are located on the roof and within the remote “tea
house” building.

As I was assisting this project, my role was to support post-tender construction liaison
involving administering drawings and specification issued and responding to contractor D1,D3
technical queries.

I reviewed and commented on the entire Electrical contractor working drawings – Lighting
and Fire Alarm, Small Power and Ancillary services, Low Voltage & Fire Alarm schematic CI2
drawings ensuring they were as per our specification.

The client was interested in installing a food service lift in the basement kitchen to serve
the Café/ Restaurant on the ground floor of the new extension. I was given the
responsibility of specifying the lift, I read the lifts catalogue in the company’s library and AI1,AM1
also used Google search engine online. I then shortlisted three of them and contacted the
manufacturers to discuss the clients requirements. I then requested for technical
datasheets on the food lift. I decided to use Stannah Microlift which met all the clients’
requirements and I produced the food service lift specification report. AI2,AM2

I reviewed and commented on all technical datasheets submission to ensure the proposed
equipment and devices for the different electrical services were in accordance with our
electrical specification. I responded to all queries and RFI’s (Request for Information) from CM4
the electrical contractors. I also raised Request for Architect’s Instructions (RFAI) for any
additional design responsibilities. I kept a track record of all incoming and outgoing
documents and information for future reference.

Project procurement took the form of Construction Management, with Sir Robert McAlpine
managing the various work packages. Close liaison with the M & E Services Managers at
Sir Robert McAlpine was required and regular progress meetings for each of the work
package were organized. I regularly attended M& E coordination meetings with my AM2
Associate Director, Wayne Malcolm, to explain the proposed electrical service routing
strategies and constraints and also to answer other electrical services queries.

The back of house lighting design which we were in charge of was over budget and we
were asked to carry out a value engineering exercise to reduce the cost. I worked closely
with the Electrical contractor and revisited all the different luminaires proposed and we AI2, B3
came up with like for like options which were cheaper. The cost of the new design came

back with a reduced budget cost. During the evaluation process I ensured all luminaires
were energy efficient and complied with Building Regulation Part L2A E3

I also worked closely with the Front of House lighting specialist to ensure the specialist
luminaires have been assigned circuit reference numbers and documented in the BI1,BI2,BM2
distribution and lighting control panel schedule produced with Microsoft Excel spreadsheet
and I also liaised with the Mechanical Engineers to obtain the power required for the HVAC BM1
equipments and control panel.

My medium term goal is to develop myself in Financial Management, Human resources management and
Presentational skills. By developing these skills I hope to progress to an Associate Director level to put into
practice the acquired knowledge and expertises. I hope to develop innovative engineering solution that will
provide more sustainable buildings.

Long Term – 10yrs

My long term goal is to rise to a Managing Director position in my career and also to be a Fellow member of
CIBSE. I will use the experience gained to start my own Building Services Engineering Consultant Company,
whether in the United Kingdom or abroad. I also desire to help the world at large to eradicate poverty and
illiteracy by opening a charity organisation that will raise funds to support struggling people and nations.

I would also like to participate in the mentoring of young and upcoming building services Engineers.
