C. David Cooper and F.C. Alley, Air Pollution Control: A Design Approach, 4th Edition

Note: The Sternberg text has more detail on regulation and impacts of various pollutants.
It is a good book if you main interest is policy. It does have design info, but not to the
extent of Cooper and Alley. The Cooper and Alley gives good design details, and a good
book if you are interested in process engineering. It is lighter on the regulation and
effects. Either book will work for this course.

Objective: To enable engineers to understand natural and anthropogenic sources of air pollution,
their impact on health and the environment, and learn ways to prevent or minimize
pollution by the application of control practices. Broad areas of interest to be covered
include:

 the effects of pollutants on health and welfare;


 the laws and regulations that have been promulgated in an attempt to achieve and
maintain acceptable ambient air quality;
 the modeling of atmospheric dispersion of pollutants; and
 the general and specific approaches to the control of particulate and gaseous
emissions

Course Structure: This course consists of lecture periods which will be taught simultaneously with ChE
404, Air Emissions and Regulation

Assignments:
 Assignments are due before you take the exam for that section. Suggest dates are given below.
They should be submitted electronically through Balckboard. Let me know if you don’t see an
upload link – as it will mean I messed it up.
 Reading assignments due BEFORE material is discussed in class
 I have set up the summer course to be self-paced. The homework should be submitted before you
request the exam from that section.
