Introduction

This lesson is designed to provide practical exercises in the

correct methods of termination for SYSTIMAX copper
patchpanels, cables and component range as required for site
registration and warranty. The exercises are designed in a
logical way so each student is able to make a complete circuit
using a series of different copper cables and components. This
exercise also incorporates circuit color coding, helping to
provide understanding for each of the SYSTIMAX subsystems.
Each panel and cable type will be introduced as the course
progresses with inspection by the instructor to ensure the
correct SYSTIMAX termination procedures have been
completed.

Upon completion the circuit will be tested to ensure continuity

and correct termination.

Color Codes

Color Code for 4-Pair UTP Cables

The tables below illustrate the standard color code for 4-pair
UTP cables. Some cables utilize solid colors for conductor and
pair identification. In this case, each A (tip) conductor has
white insulation while every B (ring) conductor has solid
colored insulation. The 1074 cordage follows a similar color
code, however, the A (tip) wires use a light shade of the B
(ring) color instead of white.

Some cables utilize a white insulation with colored stripes at

regular intervals on every A (or tip) conductor and a colored
insulation with white stripes at regular intervals on every B (or
ring) conductor. Both color combinations are shown in the
table below

Color Code for Multipair Cables (e.g. 1010)

All plastic insulated cable is color coded for quick and easy
pair identification. On the following chart, the A (Tip) color or
wire is listed in the second and the B (Ring) is listed in the
third column. Not only are individual pairs identified by color
but also the binder groups are color-coded using the same
chart.

Administration color coding

To make installation of patch cords easier, the use of color-

coded designation strips is recommended.
The color code scheme is shown below.

Color Coded Circuit Labels Designation Strips

Cabling Element Color Code

White
Backbone Riser
Gray
Backbone Riser Tie cables
Brown
Backbone Campus
Blue
Horizontal
Purple
Equipment
Green
Network Interface (Cust Side)
Orange
Network Interface (CO Side)
Yellow
Auxiliary Circuits
Red
Key Telephone Systems

If a cabling element contains mixed categories of cabling, such

as the horizontal, they should be identified by enhanced color
coding (i.e. White stripes on a blue label to differentiate higher
performance cabling) or suitable markings.
The most common colors used in this scheme are the first five
elements. Horizontal, Riser, Tie Cables, Active Equipment and
Backbone Campus. When looking at a rack or cabinet where
there are many cables terminated as cross connects, it should
be easy to locate the elements from a distance. Easily
identifiable elements of a structured cabling system is the
object we need to achieve.

Tools for UTP Installation

It is mandatory that the following special termination tools be

used when terminating SYSTIMAX panels or outlets.
Additional ‘general’ tools may also be required such as cable
strippers, screwdrivers etc.
Use of non-SYSTIMAX termination tools may result in damage
to the cable or components and subsequent registration failure.

1pr Impact tool (Material ID. 407 484 971) is a single wire
impact tool with a reversal blade.
May be used as an insertion only or insertion/cut-off tool.
Spare blades are stored in the handle of the tool.

All of the SYSTIMAX products, panels and outlet modules

should be terminated with this tool on the ‘high’ setting with
the only exception being the 50-way 1U voice panel. This panel
is only available in some regions.

There are two blades available for this tool. The standard one
which is painted black and one marketed under the trade name
“EverSharp”. This “EverSharp” blade is silver and will last
longer than the standard blade. Both types have ‘M110’
marked on the blade and only these blades are suitable for the
SYSTIMAX/CommScope termination range of products.

788H1 Impact Tool

788H1 Impact Tool is used for the VP360 panel and combined
with different ‘heads’ can be used to either seat and terminate
the pairs onto the VP360 panel or to install the VP360 4 pair
blocks.

Spudger

Spudger is a pencil-sized tool with a dental type metal pick on

one end. The other end is shaped and notched. It is used to
remove pieces of wire insulation or conductor that gets caught
between the plastic teeth of the connecting block and also for
minimizing air gaps in cable pairs.

This is an excellent tool and helps with the dressing of the

wires in a panel.

Handling Unjacketed Pairs.

It is important that unjacketed cables are treated correctly.

Once the jacket is removed care should be taken to minimize
any changes to the pairs that would be different to when the
jacket was covering them.

Maintain twist by keeping the following precautions:

 Do not bend unjacketed pairs tightly. Only bend pairs

under tension. Do not push on pairs, do not tangle, and
avoid length differences.

 When terminating pairs onto a panel or into an outlet,

always make a loop in the twist and pull the pairs down
into the idc. DO NOT open the twist out from the end to
pull the wires into the idc. Doing this removes the twist
tension from the cable pair.

 If a pair has opened, try to close it using the Spudger. If

correction is not obtained the pair will have to be re-
terminated.

 Both ends of a 4-pair cable are not the same. Pairs should
never change position back into the end of the jacket. All
panels and outlets are designed to cope with either end
of the cable. Crossover of pairs should be outside of
cable jacket following the correct procedures.

Working with 4-pair cables

SYSTIMAX require that all data cables are stripped using a

proprietary tool such as the SYSTIMAX R-4366 Stripping Tool
or similar. Whatever stripping tool is used it must be set so that
the blade only scores the sheath and does not cut into the
dielectric of the pairs.

The strip back length depends on the type of hardware the

cable is to be terminated on to, but on average 75mm (3”) will
be sufficient. Too short a length means that it will be difficult
to physically pull the cable into the idc slots.

61 Series Cable PowerSUM

This is the easiest cable to work with. Make the rotary

score and slide the jacket off the cable. The twist ration of
this cable is fairly loose although the twist ration should
be maintained up to the termination.

71 Series Cable GigaSPEED XL

If using x-071 cable insure the paper bisector tape is

removed by bending the pairs to expose the bi-sector
then cutting or pulling off the tape. It should just
protrude from the cable. Never try to pull the tape
directly out of the end of the cable jacket. Always pull it
at 90 degrees.

PATCHMAX Panel Termination Quality

The installer should visually check the panel having used the
Spudger to minimize air gaps where found. The pairs should
be sitting comfortably in the channels without any excessive
cable or sharp twisting. It is up to the installer to examine and
verify that the following items have been maintained
throughout the installation process. This ensures a high
quality termination on the PATCHMAX Modular Panel and
the highest Category 5E transmission performance.

1. That the jacket is up against the clip.

2. Avoid spreading or otherwise damaging individual

pairs.

3. Apply tension when bending pairs.

4. The cables are not kinked or twisted in the swan-neck.

5. Pair twists must be maintained right up to the point of

separation at the IDC position. This is critical to
maintaining the highest NEXT crosstalk performance.

6. In some cases pair distortion can be corrected by

tightening the separated pair with a Spudger. If not the
pair will have to be carefully removed from the IDC
and re-terminated.

procedure as the 1100 GS3/6 Evolve range. Please follow
the instructions found later in this manual on page 52.

Multipair Termination

The panel can still be used for terminating multi-pair

cables.

Note: If terminating 25-pair cables on the rear of a panel,

do not use the termination managers.

1. Replace existing wiring labels on blocks with the

provided 25-pair wiring labels prior to terminating
the conductors. Do not place the 25-pair labels on
top of the 4-pair labels.
2. Position 25-pair cable in the center of the block and

Terminating MPS100E outlets

The following diagrams illustrate the termination of a 4-

pair cable onto an MPS100E outlet. There are two
acceptable methods of terminating this outlet having
pulled the wires into the correct position.

 Use the 110 D Impact tool to seat and cut the conductors
before fitting the cap.
 Place the cap onto the outlet and using a pair of pump
pliers, seat the conductors. Remove the cap, trim the
conductors flush and then replace the cap.

1. Using an R-4366 tool (set at 0.030 scoring depth), ring

score the cable jacket approximately 75 mm (3”) from the
end and slide the scored jacket off the cable.
2. Having identified whether terminating 568A or 568B
rotate the cable to the best position for the first two pairs
starting from the rear of the block. Ensure the jacket
stops as close to the back of the outlet as possible.
3. Hold the pair with a thumb over the slots it is to be
terminated into and unwind the twist to form a loop.
Push the pair down using your fingers into the
termination slots.

4. If the front pairs are in the wrong position, crossover of
the remaining pairs must always be done against the

manufactured, the pairs are twisted inside the sheath in a
clockwise direction. Untwist anti-clockwise)

Bn/W Bn/W

Gn/W Gn/W

O/W O/W

Bl/W Bl/W

5. Position the pairs being sure to maintain the pair twist in

the wiring channel. (Occasionally half a twist may be
added to a pair, do not add more twists, also do not
untwist)
6. Avoid Open Loops during pair terminations. This can be
fixed by lifting the conductor out of its slot and pulling
the excess conductor out until the pair is back together.
Small needle-nose pliers can be used to pull the excess
conductor out through the slot.
7. Either the D-impact tool or the wire cap may be used for
seating the conductors. When using the wire cap,
position the cap over the outlet wiring channel and push
down with pliers. Make sure the outlet cap is properly
positioned to avoid damage to outlet surfaces. Then
remove the cap and trim the wires. Verify the cap is not
damaged then replace to complete the termination.

Usage of the correct D-impact tool blade

The correct D Impact Tool Blade is the M110. This blade has a
curved tip opposite the cutting edge and failure to use this
blade will result in damage to the dielectric coating of the pairs.

and assures the best transmission performance.

1. The cable jacket should terminate as close as possible to

the back of the outlet.
2. Visual inspection is very important. Verify for open
loops during the termination procedures, as described
on the previous pages.
3. Do not rotate the outlet or cable after termination.
Tightening a bend to fit an outlet in a wall box is
acceptable; however, do not change the bend direction.

GigaSPEED X10D 91B Series Cable Preparation

The GigaSPEED X10D 91B Series cable has a central flute and
each pair has a separator tape between the conductors.

The cable must be prepared prior to termination into either

panels or modules.

1) Strip the jacket off the cable about 75mm or 3”. Stripping
longer than this makes the cable more difficult to prepare.
(see next section)

2) Move the pairs away from the center flute and then cut the
flute off using a pair of close cutting pliers. It is important
to try and cut this as flush with the end of the jacket as
possible otherwise it could cause problems during
termination.

3) Twist open the first pair end to access the gray separator
tape. Hold the pair in one hand and the end of the
separator tape in the other and gently untwist it out of the
pair back to the end of the jacket.

VP360 Termination Tools

VP360 D Impact Tool Bit (MID 760142463)

NOTE: - Specific termination tools are required for this
panel as the blocks are different from the standard 110
system. The VisiPatch VP360 termination which fits the
standard 110 D Impact tool must be used as this tip has a
different profile to the standard 110 termination bit and
also cuts two wires concurrently.

VP360 4 PR Tool Bit (MID 760161455)

The 4 PR version shown above fits in the 788 tool and

when used leads to very fast termination of the wiring
blocks as it cuts off 4 pairs at a time. It must not be used
though to install the VP360 4pr blocks, as it will damage
them! This also has a replaceable blade if required.

VP360 Head (MID 760060350)

The VP360 head must be used in the 788 tool to seat the
4pr connecting blocks into the wiring block. To remove
the 5pr blade, twist the head 90° and slide the cutter
assembly out. Slide in the VP360 head and replace the
head once again. The VP360 head does not provide any
cutting facility and is purely a shaped locating block
ensuring the 4pr blocks are securely located.

VisiPatch VP360 Termination Procedure

1. Dress the cables into the back panels prior to fitting the
wiring blocks. The cables can come in from the top or the
bottom. Careful planning will be required to ensure the
best use of the available space in the back frames is made.

Temporary
cable holding
positions

2. The VisiPatch VP360 panels are terminated from the

bottom of the frame upwards, so remove the 8 cables
from their temporary holding position and locate the first
wiring block. Listen for the audible click as it locates and
then drape over it the first eight cables to be terminated.

3. Strip at least 50mm (2”) of outer sheath from the cable to

expose the pairs. Prepare the cable as described earlier by
removing the center flute and separation tapes between
the pairs. Rotate the cable ensuring the pairs are in order
with the white/blue to the left and white/brown to the
right. Do not move the pairs out of the existing sequence.
If terminating the direct end of the cable, the blue and
brown pairs will be on top, or if terminating the reverse
end, the blue and brown are underneath.

4. Slide the end of the cable into the cable gate keeping the
pairs in order. The pairs must not crossover.

5. At the second gate, push the cable in the opposite

direction of the gate into the enlarged bit of the channel.
This will allow it to fit under the clip. Do the same at the
third gate making sure it is fully inserted.

6. The pairs should be in order without crossing over. If the

cable needs to be rotated it must be removed and re-
installed as it will not be possible to move it once in
position.

7. Hold the pair over the correct comb slot and unwind it.
The pair has to sit in the comb slot ‘shotgun’ style with
the individual wires sitting on top of one another.

Termination of Evolve 1100GS3 & GS6 Panels

Termination Tool: - D Impact 1pr Tool

The Evolve 1100GS version (above) comes with a cable

management bar and cable troughs at the rear to provide
support for the cables away from the connector face, once they
are all terminated. At the front of the panel there is a brushed
satin bezel. It is recommended that this should not be fitted
until the cables are terminated, dressed and the panel tested.
The bezel comes in a protective sleeve and covers the whole
panel including the screws that secure it to the frame or rack.

The Evolve 1100GS3/6 panels utilize 6 port modular blocks in

24 (1U) or 48 (2U) port combinations. 1100GS3 for XL
performance and 1100GS6 for X10D performance. Both of
these panels use a ‘Termination Manager’. This part provides
pair-twist control and strain relief features to the rear
termination area of the panel. To ensure the correct
performance, care must be taken to ensure the correct
procedures are adhered to.

Note: - The termination procedure for this module is the

same for the PATCHMAX and 1100 PowerSUM panel.

Termination of SYSTIMAX 1100 Modules with Termination

Managers including 1100/PATCHMAX GS3/6 and 1100PS
Panels.

The following procedures allow the installer to achieve

consistently high-quality and high-performance terminations
on the panels. Use the 110 D-Impact Tool only for seating and
cutting the conductors.

Depending on the cable being used, follow these instructions:-

Trim jacket back at least 75 mm (3”) to expose twisted-pair

wires. For 71 series cable, cut or pull off the central flute as
close to the end of the jacket as possible. For X10D cables
follow the normal procedure including removing the
separation tape from each pair and cutting it back to the end of
jacket. (See GigaSPEED X10D 91B Series Cable Preparation)

1) From out of the jacket, position twisted-pair wires ready

to be fed through the Termination Manager.

2) Insert pairs through the four holes on top of the

termination manager as shown. For T568B, the colours
must go in order from left to right, of blue, brown, orange
& green. For T568A the order changes to blue, brown,
green & orange.

Pair order is
same for both
‘Direct’ and
‘Reverse’ ends
of the cable

3) Continue to feed the wires through the Termination

Manager until resistance is encountered at the jacket. This
will usually be about 6mm (¼”) from the jacket.

termination the pairs need to sit in the slots with the
correct colored pair wire on the top. This varies for
T568A or T568B.

5) Ensure that pairs are fully seated into slots so that the
bottom of the termination manager is completely flat to
the touch. Failure to do this will cause problems when
seating the termination manager into the module.
It may be necessary to add twists to allow pairs to seat
fully. DO NOT untwist the pairs, as this will open them
up inside the Termination Manager.

10) Once complete, move the cables up to provide access to

the lower row and repeat the seating and punching down
sequence. Using the punch-down tool, punch down wires
making sure the tool is straight and the wires fully

11) Once terminated the cable management bar can be fitted.

If re-termination of any of the positions is required, the
cable management bar will have to be removed prior to
punching down. The cable troughs can either be fitted to
the bar before fitting or afterwards.

12) Group the cables into the bundles on the troughs and
secure with the Velcro cable tie. Just before the final
tensioning of the strap ensures the cable jackets are not
being pulled away from the termination manager. The
cables must not be under tension against these.

The Evolve PATCHMAX GS3 and GS6 panels also support
deployment of InstaPATCH Cu pre-terminated copper. The
PATCHMAX GS3/6 Panel is a modular connecting hardware
system designed to be mounted on a standard 19-inch (48.3cm)
frame (relay rack). The panel uses snap-in distribution
modules that can be terminated from either the front or rear of
the frame.

The PATCHMAX GS3/6 panels accept four (4) PATCHMAX

GS Distribution Modules which can be rotated forward,
allowing front-access to the 110 type IDC terminals for easy
cable termination. PATCHMAX Distribution Modules feature
an innovative termination manager and rear housing which
provides easier, faster, more reliable terminations and reduced
variability in the placement and termination of cables to the
panel.

Terminating 4 Pair Cables To M2000 Panels

The M2000 Panel is a modular panel suitable for the MPS and
MGS range of outlets. It is available in 1U 24 way or 2U 48 way
versions.

Modules can be easily removed from the panel by inserting the

legs of a module cap into the two corresponding slots at the
front of the module. This will release the locking tabs allowing
the module to be pulled out backwards. Modules should
always be put into the panel with the caps facing down which
at the front means the keyway of the RJ45 connector plug is at
the bottom.

The panel comes either with plastic cord retainers or if

required a management bar can be ordered separately. The
management bar is suitable for use only with the 3” deep
racks.

Dress cables carefully allowing 4 times cable diameter bend

radius when dressing cables. Cables can be run up (or down)
cabinet and come in from either side or both sides as required
and should be secured to the cord retainers using the supplied
millipede cable ties.

M4800 Panel Termination

The SYSTIMAX M4800 panel is available in PowerSUM or

GigaSPEED version. They are different to normal panels as
they sit proud at the front of the rack or cabinet. Install all four
screws in required panel position but leave them un-tightened
about 3mm (1/8”) out.

Locate panel by holding slightly to left of frame and then slide

to right to engage screws. Tighten screws through holes in
panel.

Blanking end caps supplied in the kit can be used to cover the
screw holes.

There is a separately orderable cable management bar available

if required. It is designed to be fitted where 75mm (3”) racking
is being used. The bar fits on the rear of the upright as shown
below. The bar should be level with lower row of outlets.

The modules are terminated in the same way as normal. As this

is a high density panel the kit contains special module caps
which must be fitted for GigaSPEED X10D compliance.

Also included with the panel is a module removal tool which

can be used in various ways.

MGS Series Outlets Termination

The following diagrams illustrate the correct termination of a 4-

pair cable onto either MGS400 or MGS600 outlets. The MGS
600 will normally only be terminated onto the x091 series cable.

1. Using an R-4366 tool (set at 0.030 scoring depth), ring

score the cable jacket approximately 75 mm (3”) from the
end and slide the scored jacket off the cable. Leaving a
long length will help with termination.

2. If using x-071 series cable, tear or cut off the bisector

paper tape level with the end of the jacket. Do not pull on
the tape as it may come out of the cable. If using x- 091
series ensure the flute is removed by cutting it back as
close as possible to the sheath and ensure the separator
tapes are removed back to this point too.

3. Looking at the rear of the outlet there are two holes and
two slots above them visible.

4. Two pairs of the cable will go through the lower holes

with the other two pairs over the top in the slots. Push
the cable into the outlet with the pairs in the correct
positions.

Termination of MGS Series Outlet (cont)

5. These outlets can be wired to either T568A or T568B

configuration. No matter which you are terminating, the
Green and Orange pairs will always be on the left hand
side of the outlet and the Blue and Brown on the right.
Remember. “GO (Green and Orange) on the left.”
6. Depending on which end of the cable is being terminated
the pairs emerge in a different position. On the Direct
End the Orange and Blue pairs go through the holes. On
the Reverse End the Green and Brown pairs go through
the holes. Do not rearrange the pairs coming out of the
cable.
7. No matter which end is being terminated, the bottom
pair is always terminated into its position first: -
8. If the bottom pair is to be terminated into the front
position: -
Hold the pair with a thumb over the slots it is to be
terminated into and unwind the twist to form a loop.
Push the pair down using your fingers into the
termination slots.

Termination of MGS Series Outlet (cont)

9. If the bottom pair is to be terminated into the rear

Position: - pull the pair back to the rear slot keeping the
other pairs out of the way. The termination procedure is
made in the same way as the front position, by holding
the pair with a thumb over the slots it is to be terminated
into, and unwinding the twist to form a loop. Push the
pair down using your fingers into the termination slots.

If terminating the bottom pair

on the back position, ensure the
pair is pulled back tightly. This
will ensure the jacket stops up
against the back of the module.

10. Once the bottom pair is terminated on one side, do the

top pair on the same side.

11. Ensure pairs do not cross the divider.

12. All pairs must be routed without slack or excess.

Termination of MGS Series Outlet (cont)

The outlet can now be terminated using either the 110

punchdown tool. If using the 110 tool, set the impact
tension to ‘High’. Punch-down visually check the outlet
and then put on the grey cap with the ‘legs’ away from
the front end of the outlet.

14. If using the ‘pliers’ method to seat the cap, ensure it is

properly positioned to prevent damage to the cap. The
cap must be removed after pressing the wires to the IDC
and the wires trimmed tight to the block. Check the cap is
not damaged and replace it.

15. Once the termination is completed do not change

direction of, or twist cable.

MGS400 and MGS600 Guideline for Angled Entry Cable

Terminations in tight locations

Some mounting hardware and box space does not allow for
cable entry directly from the rear. If a common termination
from the rear is done and the cable is then bent in the needed
direction, performance and reliability can suffer. A proper
termination should have the general direction set before
placing the conductors.

However, if the cable is bent at an angle after the termination to

accommodate a tight box configuration, the pairs on the inside
of the bend will be pushed open as shown below. These open
loops where the conductors within a pair separate can be a
cause of poor performance.

MGS400 and MGS600 Guideline for Angled Entry Cable

Terminations in tight locations (cont)

Correct Method for Angled Terminations

To avoid this, examine the box constraints and set the entry
angle before seating the conductors. The angle does not have
to be accurate and complete, because positioning the cable in
the right general direction will take care of most of the
problem. The jacket should end directly behind the entry.
Make sure the pairs on the inside of the bend have no excess.

Sideways Entry Example

Note: For entry down into the termination, the cable will tend
to be in the way when seating and punching. For this and to
accommodate the Wire Cap, the installer should make sure the
entry is back far enough and should use a shallow angle.

Terminating 4 Pair F/UTP Cables to HGS620

The following instructions describe the correct termination of a

4-pair cable onto an HGS620 F/UTP outlet.

1) When scoring the jacket, the foil must not be scored or it

will split.

2) Use an adjustable jacket-scoring tool. Carefully set the

jacket scoring depth and make some trial strips ensuring
that only the PVC jacket is being scored and the blade is
not making contact with the foil.

3) If stripping the GS10PF cords, the depth scoring

adjustment may need to be changed as these cables may
be slightly different to the x291 cables.

Surface Mount Box

The CommScope® M-type surface mount boxes (SMB) are

designed to support the use of M-series information outlets in
an indoor, wall-mounted enclosure that can accommodate
from 1 to 12 outlets and is available in five sizes and four
colors. The box is available in a 1-port, 2-port, 4-port, 6-port,
and 12-port version, all of which may be mounted to a wall or
other smooth, flat surface using either the screws or double-
sided adhesive tape provided with each unit.

These instructions cover all five sizes of the M-type surface

mount box. Single and duplex adapters allow the user the
flexibility to install a single outlet or coupler in either a single
adapter or in a duplex adapter and to use the available dust
cover in the unused port. This allows for future use without
changing adapters.

The box is versatile and cable entry can be made through the
base, as shown above, the sides or the back.

Mounting Screw Method

1. Route cables through any of two large oblong openings

provided in base. It is best to use entrances that provide for the
least amount of bending and stress on cables.
