AUTOMATIC DRAINAGE CLEANING SYSTEM

Chapter 01
INTRODUCTION
Water is a basic necessity of humans and all living beings. There is a plenty of
water on earth but that is not suitable for human use. Clean water is more important if
used for some purpose. The impurities present in water can cause hazardous and
disease. As long as the draining system is considered the function of the main drainage
system is to collect, transport and dispose of the water through an outfall or outlet.
Impurities in drainage water can be only like empty bottles, polythene bags,
papers……etc. These impurities present in drainage water can cause blockage or the
drainage system. The drainage system can be cleaned time to time manually or such a
system can be designed that will automatically throw out wastages and will keep the
water clean. This project is designed to keep clean the drainage system and helps the
smooth working of the system. This project automatically cleans the water in the
drainage system each time any wastage appears and this form an efficient and easy
way of cleaning the drainage system and preventing the blockage. It also reduces
labour and improves the quality of water that is cleaned. If the garbage are allowed to
flow the will end up flowing down to recreational beaches used for tourism purposes
making a scene not pleasurable to the eyes else these garbage flow to residential sites
where they are burnt in a way of getting rid of them, thereby causing climate change.
The drainage systems are cleaned when there is no water in them i.e. when it is not
raining, but when it is raining the drainage systems cannot be cleaned because of the
harsh conditions of the rain which no one would volunteer to endure to ensure garbage
does not enter into the drainage systems.
As today’s era is moving towards being digitalized and automated with a great
speed, the youth want everything very easily and smart. Not only the youth but the
people of all generation are finding it very easy to be smart effort and more and more
being healthy and are getting attracted or joined towards latest technology of being
“smart work”. Anywhere you go, you get this technology available. So we thought of
using this technology and adding more to it for our final year project. Nobody likes to
suffer and wait for our long waiting hours just to get good surround dance or so. To
avoid this and to save time of our management of waste we are creating a application
called “Automatic river and drainage cleaning system”. For that we are using system

1 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD

by which drainage cleaner can do his work smartly using communication through
application .
Smart Drainage Cleaning System proposed to overcome the real time
problems. With the continued expansion of industries, the problem of sewage water
must be urgently resolved due to the increasing sewage problems from industries of
the surrounding environment. The waste and gases produced from the industries are
very harmful to human beings and to the environment. Second Important thing is
waste management system by which worker can maintain all his health and work good
through application maintain that reporting worker don’t need to wait and get in to
drainage. One more very useful and important advantage of our system is that the
worker to replace the manual works in on drainage cleaning by semi mechanical drain
cleaner. And can access them very easily.
The used in that places where there is waste debris in the water body which are
to be removed. This machine is consists of solar driven conveyer mechanism which
collect & remove the wastage, garbage & plastic wastages from water bodies. This
also reduce the difficulties which we face when collection of debris take place. A
machine will lift the waste surface debris from the water bodies, this will ultimately
result in reduction of water pollution and lastly the aquatic animal's death to these
problems will be reduced. It consists of Belt drive mechanism which lifts the debris
from the water. The use of this project will be made in rivers, ponds, lakes and other
water bodies for cleaning upper water waste debris. From this project “Automatic river
and drainage cleaning system” we hope to clean the surface water debris from bodies.
The Drainage water cleaner system are used to clean wastes from water like
polythene, bottles etc. present in water .This can be used to over come the problem of
filteration of wastes from water and it save the time and cost that spend on cleaning
the drainage. As the industry setup increase in the environment the water coming from
industries are full of wastes like polythene, bottles, and other materials and that water
mix with the other water that are used by people and we know that that water is not
good for the for health of people. So to overcome from these problems we can filter
the water drainage water before it mix with other water. This type of filteration of
water is called primary filteration. In this project we use DC motor to run the system
the Equipment we used are motor, chain, driver, bucket, frame, wheel, sprocket gear,
solid shaft etc. Also we are using renewable energy source for power input to the shaft
is solar energy.

LITERATURE SURVEY

2.1 What is Solid Waste?

Solid waste is the unwanted or useless solid materials generated from human
activities in residential, industrial or commercial areas. It may be categorized in three
ways. According to its:

 origin (domestic, industrial, commercial, construction or institutional)

 contents (organic material, glass, metal, plastic paper etc)
 hazard potential (toxic, non-toxin, flammable, radioactive, infectious etc).

Solid Waste Management reduces or eliminates the adverse impact on the

environment & human health. A number of processes are involved in effectively
managing waste for a municipality. These include monitoring, collection, transport,
processing, recycling and disposal. The quantum of waste generated varies mainly due
to different lifestyles, which is directly proportional to socio economic status of the
urban population.

In 2000, India finally framed a solid waste policy requiring all cities to devise
comprehensive waste-management programmes that include household collection of
segregated waste, recycling and composting – but this was never implemented.

In metro cities in India, an individual produces an average of 0.8 kg/ waste/

person daily. The total muncipal solid waste (MSW) generated in urban India has been
estimated at 68.8 million tons per year (TPY) (0.573 million metric tonnes per day
(MMT/d) in the year 2008). The average collection efficiency of MSW ranges from
22% to 60%.

MSW typically contains 51% organic waste, 17% recyclables, 11% hazardous
and 21% inert waste. However, about 40% of all MSW is not collected at all and
hence lies littered in the city/town and finds its way to nearby drains and water bodies,
causing choking as well as pollution of surface water. Unsegregated waste collection
and transportation leads to dumping in the open, which generates leachate and
gaseous emissions besides causing nuisance in the surrounding environment. Leachate

3 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD
AUTOMATIC DRAINAGE CLEANING SYSTEM

contaminates the groundwater as well as surface water in the vicinity and gaseous
emissions contribute to global warming.

Types of Solid Waste

It can be classified into different types depending on their source:

 Municipal Solid Waste (MSW): It consists of household waste, construction

and demolition debris (CnD), sanitation residue, and waste from streets,
generated mainly from residential and commercial complexes. As per the
MoEF it includes commercial and residential waste generated in municipal or
notified areas in either solid or semi-solid form excluding industrial hazardous
wastes but including treated bio-medical wastes;
 Industrial Solid Waste (ISW): In a majority of cases it is termed as hazardous
waste as they may contain toxic substances, are corrosive, highly inflammable,
or react when exposed to certain things e.g. gases.
 Biomedical waste or hospital waste: It is usually infectious waste that may
include waste like sharps, soiled waste, disposables, anatomical waste,
cultures, discarded medicines, chemical wastes, etc., usually in the form of
disposable syringes, swabs, bandages, body fluids, human excreta, etc. These
can be a serious threat to human health if not managed in a scientific and
discriminate manner.

Figure 2.1 Solid waste in different bodies by various sources

4 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD

EFFECT OF SOLID WASTE

The drainage system may get completely chocked due to solid wastes like
plastic bags, plastic things, domestic solid waste also the hospital solid waste. We have
example of recent mumbai flood which was due to the solid waste in the drainange
syste mainly plastic carry bags.
In rivers the whole aquatic life is get suffered due to the solid waste disposal in
main flow of river. the whole aquatic life cycle collapsed and imbalances the nature.
The industrial solid waste has chemical waste which affect the quality of water
ultimately spread the serious diseases in humans as well as in other animals.
The opposition to the flow of rivers can cause big flood disaster or change the
direction of flow of water. Then to overcome over this problem we need big system
also it destroy whole life cycle of people in that area.It also collapse the economic
system and burdoned crores of rupees over goverment . It keeps that part behind all
other society by decades.
so this much serious effects we can see on whole en iroment only because of
improper solid waste management.

2.2 NEED OF INVENTION

It is belived that ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’.Here necessity lies in
reducing the pollution of river water and blockage of drainage system due to solid
waste. It is not possible manually by labours to collect whole wastage continuosly and
carefully. so to make this work easy and continuos we made this machine. To collect
all waste continuosly by application of renewable energy sources effictively we take
one step forward. To provide simple automatic system.General idea of project is to,”
We are developing an application based model which can transforms the social life of
cleaner(worker) in industry or any kind of municipal corporation into automated.
Mostly what happened nowadays when drainage has blocked due to irrespective
timing of worker to go for taking out the blockage of drainage. Also to collect
excessive storage of solid waste in sream of river , canal, lakes. We are also providing
feature which is renewable energy source for our application by providing solar PV
cell related to renewable energy source because we always unaware of those energy
utilisation of application.”

2.3 LITERATURE REVIEW

Mragank Sharma, etal. (2017) : Water is the basic need for the existence of life on
earth. In spite of 70% water on earth majority of water is not suitable for drinking
purpose. There is a huge demand of clean water as it is used for a variety of
purpose such as drinking, bathing, cleaning, cooking etc. Impurities present in
water can cause serious health issues that can damage the life of human beings.
The chief function of the automatic drainage system is to collect, transport, as well
as dispose the solid waste in the waste bucket by the help of claws. Solid waste in
drainage water includes empty bottles, polythene bags, papers etc. Impurities in
drainage water can lead to blockage of the drainage system. In order to avoid such
situation these impurities are needed to be taken out time to time for the
continuous flow of drainage water. Drain can be cleaned continuously by the help
of model using the drive system to remove the solid waste and threw it into waste
bucket. This project is designed with the objective to initiate the efficient working
of system. This project automatically cleans the water in the drainage system each
time any impurity appears, and claws which are driven by chain sprocket grasp the
solid waste and threw it into the waste bucket to avoid blockage. It even reduces
the cost of manual labor as well as reduces the threat to human life.[1]

Ankita B.Padwa.etal (2017) : This paper focuses more on Automation of Drainage

Cleaning System. There is a problem of mobility and space, to overcome this
problem Automation of the system is necessary. Our concept is to use this in
efficient way to control the disposal of wastages and with regular filtration of
wastages. Introduction of autonomous vehicle is been done to make the system
mobile. The system does require man power only to control the motion of the
system. drain are lifted by teeth which is connected to chain. This chain is attached
by gear driven by motor. When motor runs the chain starts to circulate making
teeth to lift up. The waste materials are lifted by teeth and are stored in waste
storage tank.[2]

Harshal S Shinde,etal.(2017) : Wastewater is characterized as the stream of utilized

water from homes, organizations, ventures, business exercises and foundations
which are subjected to the treatment plants by a precisely planned and built system
of funnels. This sort of wastewater is characterized and characterized by its

6 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD
AUTOMATIC DRAINAGE CLEANING SYSTEM

wellsprings of cause. Regularly 200 to 500 litres of wastewater are created for
every individual associated with the framework consistently. The measure of
stream dealt with by a treatment plant shifts with the season of day and with the
times of the year. The procedures looked into here incorporate both those that
expel poison soils in wastewater and those that vanishes them. Utilizing a
wastewater treatment innovation that expels, instead of decimates, a toxin will give
a treatment remains. At wastewater treatment plant, this stream is dealt with before
it is permitted to be come back to the earth. There are no occasions for wastewater
treatment, and most plants work 24 hours each day of the week. Wastewater
treatment plants takes a shot at basic purpose of the water cycle, helping nature
shields water from the intemperate contamination. Most treatment plants have
essential treatment and auxiliary treatment.[3]

Dr. K. KUMARESAN M.E, Ph.D, etal. (2017): In this project the proposal
concept is to replace the manual work in drainage cleaning by automated system.
Now a day’s even through automation plays a vital role in all industrial
applications in the proper disposal of sewages from industries and commercials are
still a challenging task. Drainage pipes are using for the disposal and unfortunately
sometimes there may be loss of human life while cleaning the blockages in the
drainage pipes. To overcome this problem and to save the human life we
implement design “automatic sewage cleaning system”. We designed our project
to use this in efficient way to control the disposal of wastages and with regular
filtration of wastages, clearance of gaseous substance are treated separately and
monitor the disposal of frequent manner.[4]

M. Mohamed Idhris etal. (2017): - The motive of the project is to automate the
sewage cleaning process in drainage, to reduce the spreading of diseases to human.
The black water cleaning process helps to prevent pest infestations by reducing the
residues that can attract and support pests. It also improves the shelf life and
sensory quality of food products. In the proposed system, the machine is operated
with remote control to clean the sewage. Hence, this system avoids the impacts
from the sewage waste and its harmful gases. This helps to prevent the mosquito
generation from the wastage. The system has a wiper motor that starts running as
soon as the set-up is switched on. Two power window motors are connected to the

7 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD
AUTOMATIC DRAINAGE CLEANING SYSTEM

wheel and it is driven with the help of the remote control set-up. The process starts
collecting the sewage wastes by using the arm and it throws back the waste into the
bin fixed in the machine at the bottom. An arm is used to lift the sewage and in
turn a bucket is used to collect them. The set-up runs even in sewage area with
water (limited to a particular amount) so that the wastages which floats on the
water surface also gets collected. The garbage which affects the drainage is also
picked up and removed. This system has limited human intervention in the process
of cleaning and in turn reduces spreading of diseases to mankind.[5]

Ganesh U L,etal. (2017) : In this research paper the proposed concept is to replace
the manual work in drainage cleaning by mechanical drain cleaner. Now-a-days
even though mechanical drainage plays a vital role in all industrial applications in
the proper disposal of sewages from industries and commercials are still a
challenging task. Drainage pipes are using for the disposal and unfortunately
sometimes there may be loss of human life while cleaning the blockages in the
drainage system. To overcome this problem and to save human life we implement
a design “mechanical semi-automatic drainage water cleaner” and we designed our
project to use this in efficient way to control the disposal of wastages and with
regular filtration of wastages. The Drainage system cleaner is a machine which
helps to protect the environment from different kinds of environmental hazards. [6]

OBJECTIVES
The major objectives of the proposed work are, Design of mechanical drainer,
taking into account the various factors that might affect the functionality of the
equipment. Fabrication of the model and Assembling of the model carried out, then
process are studied and optimized for effective automatic drainer for sewage water
treatment for floating materials.
The main objectives which we have to achieve are as follows:
1) To reduce the pollution in water bodies.
2) To overcome the difficulty of removing waste particulate floating on water surface.
3) To maintain the automation during working towards cleaning River and drainage.
4) To perform the fast & reliable operation during cleaning River and drainage.
5) Improve the water quality of a river.
7) To work for society for clean up a section of a stream or river.

3.1 WORKING PRINCIPLE

Figure 3.1 Automatic drainage cleaning system

Light from the sun is incident on the solar panel in order to generate power in
terms of solar energy which is then transmitted into chemical energy of the battery by
the help of battery charger which is connected to the solar panel as well as the battery.
Battery is connected to the DC motor and once it is fully charged chemical energy is

9 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD

converted into electrical energy and is passed to DC motor which rotates the armature
of coil which in turn initiates the chain & sprocket drive mechanism. Chain is properly
lubricated. Finger shaped clasp is attached to the chain which is used to pick up the
solid waste from drain and carries it and throws it away in waste bucket attached at
backside of drainage system model. This
process continues automatically till the energy is imparted to the motor by the
help of battery in order to avoid blockage of drains and enhance sewage treatment
system.

4.2 DESIGN PROCESS

Design consists of application of scientific principle, technical information, and
imagination for development of new mechanism to perform specific function with
maximum economy and efficiency. Hence careful design approach has to be adopted.
The total design work has been split into two parts. we mainly concentrated on the
following parameter: -

System Mechanical

System selection based on constraints Forces generated during power

arrangement of various components transmission

Man machine interaction Parts to be purchased

Chances of failure Load stresses and failure

Servicing facility Dead weight forces

Scope of future improvement Friction, inertia and centrifugal forces

Mechanical outline stage is imperative from the perspective of originator as

entire achievement of venture relies on upon the right plan examination of the issue.
Numerous preparatory options are killed amid this stage. Creator ought to have
sufficient learning about physical properties of material, load stresses and
disappointment. He ought to recognize all inside and outer powers following up on
machine parts.
A. Frame Design
Assumptions
(Area of frame = 610 × 610 mm2) 610
Total load on frame is about 25kg
F=25×9.81=245.25N

R1 +R2 = F And ΣMR1 = 0

F×305 - R2×610 = 0 Therefore,
R2 = 122.625Nand R1 = 122.625N
Mb = 122.625 × 305= 37400.625N/mm2
Y= b/2 = 25/2 = 12.5mm
I = bd3 / 12 = (25)4 / 12= 32552.333
Stress on frame,
σ = Mb y / I = 14.362 N / mm2
σ = Syt / fos therefore,
Syt = σ × fos
= 14.362 × 5 …………… (assum. fos = 5)
= 71.810 N / mm2
Selecting material GCI 15 having Tensile strength (min) = 150 N / mm2
For safer design considerations as 71.810 N / mm2
Therefore all assumptions are in safer state.

B. Shaft
We select material for shaft 45C8 from DDB of V.B.Bhandari (2.15)
Sut = 640 N/mm2 and Syt = 380 N/mm2 .Because it gives higher resistance to
corrosion compared to plain carbon steel. Also it has higher strength, hardness and
toughness.
A.S.M.E. Code for design of shaft by using Design of Machine Element-I TMX
1) Permissible stress –
ʈall = 0.75(0.3Syt)= 85.5 N/mm2
ʈall = 0.75(0.18Syt) = 86.4 N/mm2
here we have to caculate that actually how much power needed to carry the waste from
surface of water to collecting bean.
For that we assumed that the machine has to carry the maximum 5 kg load from water
surface to cakes maximum collecting bin it takes 10 second time.
Then, by using basic formula of physics to calculate the work is
POWER=WORK/TIME
=FORCE*DISPLACEMENT/TIME
Here we considered the length of conveyour from surface to bean is 900mm.So it
becomes,
=49.05*900/10
P =4.414 N-m/S
Torque of shaft-

FUNCTION OF COMPONENTS
CHAIN DRIVE
In this machine Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one
place to another. The power is conveyed by a roller chain, known as the drive
chain or transmission chain, passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the gear
meshing with the holes in the links of the chain. The gear is turned, and this pulls the
chain putting mechanical force into the system. As it rotates the two shafts it gives
rolling motion to the conveyour system. so that it can rotate the clasp or lifter attached
to it and carry the waste in it.

DC MOTOR
A DC Motor like we all know is a device that deals in the conversion of Electrical
energy to mechanical energy and this is essentially brought about by two major parts
required for the construction of dc motor, namely.
1) Stator – The static part that houses the field windings and receives the supply and
2) Rotor – The rotating part that brings about the mechanical rotations.
Other than that there are several subsidiary parts namely the
3) Yoke or casting of dc motor.
4) Magnetic poles of dc motor.

WORKING

A pillow block usually refers to a housing with an included anti-friction bearing. A

pillow block refers to any mounted bearing wherein the mounted shaft is in a parallel
plane to the mounting surface, and perpendicular to the center line of the mounting
holes, as contrasted with various types of flange blocks or flange units. A pillow block
may contain a bearing with one of several types of rolling elements, including ball,
cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, or metallic or synthetic bushing. The
type of rolling element defines the type of pillow block. These differ from "plumber
blocks" which are bearing housings supplied without any bearings and are usually
meant for higher load ratings and a separately installed bearing.

Bearing housings are usually made of grey cast iron. However, various grades of
metals can be used to manufacture the same, including ductile iron, steel, stainless
steel, and various types of thermoplastics and polyethylene-based plastics. The bearing
element may be manufactured from 52100 chromium steel alloy (the most common),

19 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD

stainless steel, plastic, or bushing materials such as SAE660 cast bronze, or SAE841
oil impregnated sintered bronze, or synthetic materials.

ISO 113 specifies internationally accepted dimensions for plummer blocks.

Shaft

Figure 5(d) Metal shaft

Types:

They are mainly classified into two types.

 Transmission shafts are used to transmit power between the source and the
machine absorbing power; e.g. counter shafts and line shafts.
 Machine shafts are the integral part of the machine itself; e.g. crankshaft

Materials:

The material used for ordinary shafts is mild steel. When high strength is required,
an alloy steel such as nickel, nickel-chromium or chromium-vanadium steel is used.

Shafts are generally formed by hot rolling and finished to size by cold
drawing or turning and grinding

Stresses:

20 CSMSS,CSCOE A’BAD
AUTOMATIC DRAINAGE CLEANING SYSTEM

The following stresses are induced in the shafts.

1. Shear stresses due to the transmission of torque (due to torsional load).

2. Bending stresses (tensile or compressive) due to the forces acting upon the
machine elements like gears and pulleys as well as the self weight of the shaft.
3. Stresses due to combined torsional and bending loads.

DISADVANTAGES
 Due to direct contact with water for 24/7 system need extra painting cost or in
practical model non corrosive materials needs to be used. which may increase
cost of system.
 Need strong foundation in case of flooding or high speed flow in river or
drainage.
 Higher vibration in the system due to motor .

FUTURE SCOPE
As the system is working continuously in the aqueous environment so we can
use more effective corrosion resistant material for good working of the system under
water. We can make the system computer operated by providing sensors at the
collecting bin. We can adopt it in large scale for municipals drainage system and in
river cleaning.

CONCLUSION
In this project we designed a machine which is a health monitoring system,
which is going to transform a lot different from the conventional method as this
system does not need more human labour for the waste water cleaning and this can
reduce the direct contact of the human labour with the waste water so there is no
hazard for the human labour. Also this method is automatic so the working time is less
as compared to the conventional method. Also in the earlier method of waste water
treatment the worker used to inhale lot of toxic gases so the health of worker was
seriously damaged and he used to die at a earlier age. This was the major drawback of
the conventional method. Because of this project as their is no direct contact of the
worker with the toxic gases so the health of worker will be good and he will be able to
work for a longer duration.
River cleaning becomes easy and it works continuosly. As we are going to use
solar energy no extra energy cost needed only setup cost is included. It is one step
ahead to clean India. Simple mechanism and principle is used so it is not complicated
to work.Simple, efficient and cheap system.
