into lowering her defenses. To prove their claims, Sandor returns with the crate
containing the wight, which is worryingly silent. Sandor gets the crate open, but
there is still no movement. He finally gives the crate a massive kick, which

You guys ever been up there? the troop chief asked, pointing at the target
compounds.

The furthest weve ever been is here, he said, pointing to a spot not even
halfway to where we wanted to go. It took us six hours, and we made contact and
got into a long firefight. We had to move back down out of the valley.

We spent a few more minutes talking about the plan

assault the target and clear it before the sun came up.

It was already midnight, which meant we were running out of darkness. So we had to
launch immediately.

Weve got one hundred percent illumination tonight, so it will be bright as fuck
out there, fellas, Phil said.

Typically, we try not to operate when the moon is full. Our night vision works even
better, but the high illumination means the enemy could see us too, cutting our
advantage in half.

Tactical patience is key. We typically liked to wait and develop a target, and then
hit it with the odds stacked in our favor. We werent fighting second graders. The
Taliban are good fighters and we already knew the operation had the potential to
get squirrelly.

Hey guys, we are getting our hands forced a little here, the troop commander
said. We need to accept a little more risk because of who were going after.

A cloud of dust covered me as I ran off the ramp of the CH-47 Chinook helicopter.
We landed in an open field, and my teams job was to move west of the target while
Steve and his team moved south, creating a loose L shape as we moved toward a
cluster of compounds where we thought Bergdahl might be held.

The target was an hour-and-a-half helicopter ride from our base in Jalalabad. There
was a house on the edge of the landing zone. Steves team took a few steps off the

Todays briefing was standing room only. I was seated next to Charlie near the back
on one of the benches. I saw several of the SEALs from the other squadron wedged
around the model, which still demanded your attention when you saw it. They were
studying it intently before the briefing. It was amazing how it sucked you in and
youd find yourself fixated on it.

A portion of the briefing was about what to do if the mission went drastically
wrong and the Pakistani authorities somehow apprehended us.

The president had already given us the green light to protect ourselves, even if we
had to engage the Pakistan military. We were going deep into Pakistan, and we
needed a reason other than the truth in case we were detained.

OK, guys, the officer said. Here is what they came up with. Were on a search
and recovery mission for a downed ISR platform, he said.

As he loaded up the wheelbarrow, I walked over to shoot the shit. Id never met
him, but some of my teammates had recommended his work. Spreading mulch was
something I should do myself, but with so little personal time, it was easier to
pay for it.

Youre in the teams, right? the mulch guy said between scoops.

Yeah, I said.

From the look of him, he could have been a SEAL except for his long surfer haircut.
He was tall and wiry, and he had tattoos covering both arms. He was wearing a ratty
surf T-shirt and worn Carhartt pants.

Figured, you look the part, the mulch guy said, setting down the wheelbarrow. I
just did Jays house. You know him?

Hes my boss, I said. Were actually headed out to do some shooting next week.

Jay was my squadron commander, but I didnt know him that well. He had taken over
the squadron before the last deployment. He didnt go out on missions with us very
often, so I never really worked with him. At his rank he was typically found
running the Joint Operations Center (JOC) and helping us jump through hoops to get
missions approved.

We sometimes called our officers temps because they showed up for a few years
before moving on to check another box on their career path. They bounced from one
job to
class.

I was into work early that morning to get in a workout and get my kit together for
the trip, when I ran into Steve.

I need a break, Steve said. It has been a good run since Green Team, and with
all the new rules it has taken all the fun out of the job.

I hear you, I said. Got one more rotation as a team leader and then well see.

Everyone in the squadron was a combat veteran. The average guy had at least a dozen
deployments. Even with the pace and the sacrifices of being away from family, most
of us kept coming back for more.

Its going to be a short break, I said to Steve. Youll be back soon as a troop
chief.

So we can both learn the art of PowerPoint, Steve said.

Everything in Afghanistan was getting harder. It seemed with every rotation we had
new requirements or restrictions. It took pages of PowerPoint slides to get a
mission approved. Lawyers and staff officers pored over the details on each page,
making sure our plan was acceptable to the Afghan government.

We noticed there were fewer assaulters on missions and more straphangers, each of
whom performed a very limited duty. We now took conventional Army soldiers with us
on operations as observers so they could refute any false accusations.
