Power and installation requirements
Depending on the location of the CYANScope, the required power supply has to be between 110 –
230 V AC. Please note that the CYANScope is suited for both 110 V AC and 230 V AC. The voltage-
switch at the back of the CYANScope needs to adjusted manually according to your location’s power
requirements (110 -230 V AC).

It is advised to maintain a maximum stability of electrical current in the laboratory (no more than 10%
variation). When this cannot be guaranteed, usage of the following supplementary devices is
strongly recommended:
 Electronic stabilizer
This is used to stabilize the electric voltage in the laboratory. Any stabilizer, currently available on
the market, with a power potential of at least 0.5 KW is used.
 No Break Module UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)
This module has two important features:
o Stabilizes the main power
o Supplies power to the instrument in case of main power line failure

To improve the device’s stability and to protect it from overcurrent, one fuse is built in the CYANScope.
When the fuse needs to be replaced, it is important to use the correct fuse to prevent damage to the
CYANScope.
For the CYANScope the following fuses are recommended:

230V power inlet: T250mAL250V

115V power inlet: T5AL250V

Two types of fuses are widely used: the fast blowing (F) and the slow blowing fuses (T). It is possible
to replace a blown-out T-fuse with an F-fuse. It is not allowed to switch an F-fuse for a T-fuse. This
could lead to serious damage.

Maintenance
1. All the lenses have been adjusted properly.
2. The nosepiece, coarse and fine focusing parts are very delicate
3. Keep the instrument clean and do not damage the optical element when wiping away the
dust of the instrument.
4. The contaminations on the prism, like fingerprints and oil smudges, should be gently wiped
with a piece of soft cloth or tissue paper or gauze which has been immersed in pure alcohol
or ether.

NOTE: Alcohol and ether are highly flammable. Keep them away from the fire, sources of heat (light
bulb) or potential sources of electrical sparks, and use them in a well-ventilated room.

5. Do not use organic solvents to clean the glass components.

6. If the microscope gets wet (splashed by any liquid) during use, cut the power off directly and
wipe away the liquid.
7. Do not disassemble any parts of the microscope, as this will affect the function or reduce the
performance of the microscope.
8. Place the instrument in a cool, dry position. Keep the microscope covered when not in use
to avoid it getting dusty. Make sure the lamp socket is cool before covering the microscope.

NOTE: Damage to the instrument due to dismantling (even during replacement) and/or wrong use
of the optical parts is not covered by warranty.

8.2 Adjustment and Operation

8.2.1 Brightness Adjustment

1. Connect the power cord and set the main switch ① to on
(« I » state).
2. Turning the brightness adjustment knob ② clockwise, the
voltage raises, and the brightness strengthens; whereas
turning at the anti-clockwise direction, the voltage
declines, and the brightness weakens.

8.2.2 Placing the Specimen

1. Place the specimen① in the center of the mechanical stage
and use the stage clips to clamp it.
2. Turn the portrait and lateral adjustment knob ② of the
mechanical ruler, move the specimen to the required position.

NOTE: Be careful when changing the objective. If you finish the observation with the short working
distance objective, and want to change another one, ensure the objective does not touch the
specimen.

8.2.3 Focusing the Specimen

Focus the specimen with 10X objective. To avoid the objective
touching the specimen during focusing, you should raise the
mechanical stage to let the specimen close to the objective at first,
then slowly separate them to bring the specimen to focus.

When operating, use 10×magnification objective to search and

focus specimen firstly, then replace with higher magnification objective if necessary. Turn the coarse
focus knob ② conversely to lower the specimen and search images in the 10× ocular simultaneously,
and then use the fine knob ① to focus. After that, you can replace with other magnification
objectives safely, and focus without the risk of damaging the specimen.

N OTE: To make the observation more convenient, you can use the locking set ③ to fix the stage in a
vertical direction.

8.2.4 Condenser Adjustment
Turn the condenser focus knob to move the condenser up and
down. Raise the condenser when using the high magnification
objective, and descend it when using the low magnification one.

N OTE:

- The condenser and the objective are coaxial. It has been adjusted before leaving the factory,
so the user does not need to adjust them.
- The highest position of the condenser has been adjusted too.

8.2.5 Aperture Iris Diaphragm Adjustment

Turn the aperture iris diaphragm collar ① to adjust the aperture
iris diaphragm.

N OTE:
- The aperture iris diaphragm is designed for the adjustment of the numerical aperture, not
for the brightness.
Generally, setting the aperture iris diaphragm to 70- 80% of the N.A. (Numerical Aperture) of
the objective in use will provide an image with good contrast. If you want to observe the
image of the aperture iris diaphragm, remove one eyepiece and look through the tube. You
will see a dark circle encroaching on the bottom of the tube.

8.2.6 Adjusting the Interpupillary Distance

The interpupillary distance range is 55 mm ~ 75 mm. While looking
through the eyepieces, move both eyepieces until the left and right fields
of view coincide completely.

8.2.7 Adjusting the Diopter

Turn the eyepiece ① to adjust the diopter while looking through it. The
diopter range of the eyepiece is ±5 diopter. The line on the viewing head
indicates the used diopter.

Factory - Fabrique: Industriepark 36 • Zone B5 • 2235 Hulshout • Belgium • Tel: ++ 32 15 67 67 68 • e-mail: cypress@diagnostics.be
8.2.8 Adjusting the tension adjustment collar
Turn the tension adjustment collar ① with your fingers .When the collar
is turned in the direction of the arrow, tension of the coarse adjustment
knob ② increases. Turning the collar in the opposite direction decreases
the tension.
If the nosepiece descends on its own or if the specimen gets out of focus
quickly even when it is brought into focus using the fine adjustment
knob ③, it means the tension of the coarse adjustment knob is too low. Turn the collar in the
direction of the arrow to increase the tension.

8.2.9 Adjustment of the prism position
1. Unscrew the 4 screws (2 at the top and 2 at the bottom) shown in the figure below and remove
the prism cover.

2. Draw a small point in the center of a microscope slide as well as on the left eyepiece (as shown
in the figure below). For this, use a marker which you can easily remove with some ethanol
afterwards.

3. Look through the left eyepiece (the marked one) and find the point on the microscope slide in
the viewing field. Then move the stage to keep the point on the microscope slide coincide with
the point on the eyepiece.
4. Put the marked eyepiece into the right eyepiece tube and loosen the slotted screw as shown in
the figure below. Then adjust the position of the prism (don’t touch the prism with your hands
but use for example lint free tissue) to keep the point on the microscope slide coincide with the
point on the eyepiece. If they coincide, tighten the screw.

5. At last, put back the prism cover and tighten the 4 screws.

9.2.1 Verification of the PC board
Please follow the instruction below to verify the good functioning of the PC board. It is important to
both check the incoming voltage and the outgoing voltage.

Measuring the incoming voltage on the PC board:

1. Disconnect the power cord

2. Open the back of the CYANScope (See chapter 9.1)
3. Reconnect the microscope to the power supply and turn it ON
4. Check the voltage according to the picture below using a multi meter:
The red probe is placed on the top connection; the black probe is placed on the lowest
connection.
 The voltage measured here should be 110 – 230 V AC (±10%)

 If the incoming voltage is correct, it means that there is NO problem between the power
connection and the PC board. However, it does NOT mean that the PC board is working
correctly, therefore you need to measure the outgoing voltage by following the procedure
below.

21

Headquarters - Siège social: Langdorpsesteenweg 160 • 3201 Langdorp • Belgium • www.diagnostics.be

Factory - Fabrique: Industriepark 36 • Zone B5 • 2235 Hulshout • Belgium • Tel: ++ 32 15 67 67 68 • e-mail: cypress@diagnostics.be
Measuring the outgoing voltage on the PC board:

1. Disconnect the power cord

2. Open the back of the CYANScope (See Chapter 9.1)
3. Take out the PC board by unscrewing the top and bottom screws of the board
4. The PC board can now be lifted out of its holder, make sure you have easy access to the back
of the PC board
5. Reconnect the microscope to the power supply and turn it on
6. Measure the voltage according to the picture below using a multi meter:

The outgoing voltage of the PC board depends on the position of the brightness adjustment knob.
The higher the brightness, the higher the measured voltage. The lower the position of the brightness
adjustment knob, the lower the voltage.
 The voltage should be between 30 -230 V AC
 If the measured voltage is not correct, the PC board has not been adjusted properly or the PC
board is defective and should be replaced (CM001-S15)

Before replacing the PC board, please verify the brightness adjustment knob. (See Chapter 9.2.6)

Attention!
When you replace the PC board, it is very important to perform the adjustment of the brightness!
(See Chapter 9.2.2)

9.2.3 Replacement of the PC board
NOTE: For this procedure you should be capable to perform solid soldering.

1. Remove the rear panel of the microscope (See Chapter 9.1)

2. Make a picture of the electronic board so that you can remember the position of each cable
3. Also marking the cables is a good idea. The exact position of each cable is crucial for the good
functioning of the CYANScope
4. For some of the cables it is necessary to cut them
5. Reattach the correct cables to the board by proper soldering (see picture below)

Attention!
It is essential that the upper and the lower cable indicated on the picture above are soldered on the
board in the same position. Do NOT switch them!

6. Reattach the PC board back in the correct position.

7. Switch ON the CYANScope
8. Turn the brightness adjustment knob at its lowest stand and adjust the MIN trimmer on the
board until the light is almost out
9. Turn the brightness adjustment knob at its highest stand and adjust the MAX trimmer by
measuring the lamp voltage
 This voltage must be between 5.7 V and 6.4 V, if not adjust the trimmer

Attention!
When you replace the PC board, it is very important to perform the adjustment of the brightness!
(See Chapter 9.2.2)

Verification of the transformer
A. Check the output voltage of the PC board (See Chapter 9.2.1)
 This is the voltage that will enter the transformer
B. Check the output voltage of the transformer:
1. Disconnect the 2 crimp pin connectors (circled in red in the picture below)
The colored (blue in the picture below) wires are the outlet from the transformer and these
2 wires are connected with the 2 white cables of the ceramic socket
2. Measure the voltage between the 2 blue cables
 The measured voltage should be between 1.1– 6.4 VAC depending on the position of the
brightness adjustment knob.

 If the output voltage of the PC board (A) is correct and the measured output voltage of the
transformer (B) is correct, than the transformer works fine.
 If the output voltage of the PC board (A) is correct and the measured output voltage of the
transformer (B) is NOT correct, the transformer is broken and should be replaced. (See
chapter 9.2.5)

Verification of the ceramic socket

B. Check the output voltage of the transformer. The measured voltage should be between 1.1– 6.4
VAC depending on the position of the brightness adjustment knob.
C. Measure the voltage between the 2 pins of the lamp. The voltage should be the same as the
voltage coming from the transformer (between 1.1 and 6.4 VAC depending on the position of the
brightness adjustment knob).
 If the output voltage of the transformer (B) is correct, and the measured voltage on the 2 pins
of the lamp (C) is not correct, the ceramic socket is broken and should be replaced.

Verification of the lamp
1. Turn the brightness adjustment knob in largest position (full power to lamp)
2. Measure the voltage on the 2 pins of the lamp

 If the measured voltage on the 2 pins of the lamp is correct, but the lamp is NOT burning, the
lamp is broken and should be replaced.

Tip!
You can move the lamp a bit forward (see image below) so the connections are easier to reach. The
socket is very fragile because of the ceramic material, please handle the socket with care.

9.2.5 Replacement of the transformer

NOTE: For this procedure you should be capable to perform solid soldering.

Procedure:
1. Remove the rear panel of the microscope (See Chapter 9.1)
2. Disconnect the 2 crimp pin connectors (circled in red in the picture below)
The colored (blue in the picture below) wires are the outlet from the transformer and these 2
wires are connected with the 2 white cables of the ceramic socket

3. Cut the 4 wires (red, yellow, green and black in the picture below) going from the transformer to
the back of the Hz switch.

NOTE:
 Make sure you have enough room to solder the cables of the new transformer, so do not cut
too close to the Hz switch.

Factory - Fabrique: Industriepark 36 • Zone B5 • 2235 Hulshout • Belgium • Tel: ++ 32 15 67 67 68 • e-mail: cypress@diagnostics.be
 Make sure you cut the correct black wire, there are 2 connected together (see red arrow)
A third black wire is a loop on the ‘115V’ position of the switch.

4. Take out the transformer by unscrewing the 4 screws attaching it to the instrument

5. Install the new transformer (CM001-S18) into the instrument

6. Reconnect the 2 blue cables to the white cables of the ceramic socket using the connectors
7. Reconnect the other 4 colored cables with the cut ends coming from the Hz switch
 Solder the ends together and protect the connection with a heat-shrink tube or insulation tape.
 Alternatively, use commercially available plastic connectors, which don’t require soldering.

8. Turn ON the instrument and verify the output voltage of the new transformer (See chapter 9.2.4)

9.2.6 Verification of the brightness adjustment knob

Procedure:
1. Remove the rear panel of the microscope (See Chapter 9.1)
2. Check whether the two wires coming from the potentiometer for brightness are properly
connected to the circuit board
3. First mark the 2 wires Upper/Lower (indicated on the picture below)
4. Then disconnect them from the PC board

NOTE: if you disconnect these 2 wires, you should be able to reconnect them after this procedure by
soldering. Do not switch the upper and lower cable, the correct position is crucial.

5. Measure the resistance (Ω) with a voltage meter

6. At the same time, turn the brightness adjustment knob to check if the resistance changes.
 If resistance does not change, it means that the potentiometer is damaged and needs
replacement (CM001-S17).
