4. Method rof Calibration

Test Setup: The Mass Frlow Meter to be calibrated was installed in the standard
test line of Oil Flow Labclratory using Suitable reducers and expanders as shown
in fig.2. The Merter was; provided with suitable straight-lengths Upstream and
Downstream to ernsure a steady flow. The required flow was provided using one
high capacity pump. "Standing start and stop" method was employed for the
calibration. A Uttiversal Counter was used to determine the time of collection of
oil. The upstrearn pressure of the meter was measured using a precision pressure
gauge.
Procedure: The line was flooded and the entrapped air cleared using air bleeds.
The ON-OFF valve in the system was kept open and the flow through the meter
was adjusted to the rerluired flow rate by controlling the electricallyimanually
operated control valve Once the flow rate was adjusted as per the requirement,
the ON-OFF valve was closed. The initial mass of the weighing tank was
determined. Then the Ol.l-OFF valve was opened to allow flow through the meter.
The flow was maintained through the meter for a known interval of time. The trme
of flow was determined using a Universal Counter, which was triggered by a photo
sensor, attached to the ON-OFF valve. The mass of oil collected, the time of
collection and indicated pulse were noted. The actual flow rate, actual mass,
actual volume, nreter far:tor, o/o error in mass and o/o error in volume was then
computed as given in tl're sample calculation. This procedure was repeated for
different flow rates also.

i. The Mass Flow Meter was calibrated for the specified flow range
ii. The uncertainty in the determination of % error in mass is given in Table.2
iii. The calibratioh curve for the Mass Flow meter is plotted in fig.3
iv. Density calibration results are given in table I A
The uncertainty in determination of o/o error in mass for the given flow range is
estimated to be better than 0.030 %. The reported expanded uncertainty in
measurement is stated as the uncertainty in measurement multlplied by the
coverage factor k (shown in Table. 3), which for a normal drstribution corresponds
to a coverage probability of approximately 95.45%.
