1. What is a Desktop?
Ans. The background that is seen on the screen as soon as the booting process is over is called the
Desktop, which contains a wallpaper on it.
2. Name the different areas of the Taskbar.
Ans. The taskbar is the thin strip that runs across the bottom of your screen. It is split into a number
of different areas: a round Start button, Quick Launch icons and System Tray (that consist of few
application icons, a notification area and a clock).

3. State one function of the System Tray.
Ans. The system tray (or “systray”) is a section of the Taskbar that is used to display the clock and the icons
of certain programs that are mostly running in the background and aren’t used explicitly very often.
4. What is Aero Peek used for?
Ans. Hovering the mouse over the taskbar displays a thumbnail view of open Windows this is called
Aero Peek.
5. How do you Pin or Unpin an Application on the Taskbar in Windows 7?
Ans. To pin or unpin an application to the Taskbar perform the following steps:
• To Pin a program, drag it to the taskbar and release.
• To Unpin programs, simply right-click on the icon on the Taskbar and select Unpin this program
from taskbar.
6. Is it possible to search for a file through the Start Menu? If so how?
Ans. The Search programs and files option on the Start menu as the name suggest is used to search
for programs and files on your computer. This is particularly helpful if you tend to forget the
location of a file created by you long time ago. You need to simply click on this text box on the
Start menu and type the name of the file. The Start menu will get flooded with names of files and
applications in your computer that matches with the given filename.
7. When a process of Shut down initiates, what happens internally?
Ans. Shutting down is a process by which the computer system initiates the process of closing all
applications, clearing the memory before the system is powered off.
8. Name the different options available in Shut down.
Ans. The Shut Down button of the Start Menu provides the following options:
• Switch User
• Log off
• Lock
• Restart
• Sleep
9. What is an icon? How do you start an Application using an icon?
Ans. An icon is a small picture that is used to represent a file, program, web page, or command. They
are a quick way to identify an object and execute it.
On your desktop using your mouse you can double-click (or single-click if configured) to start
an application.
10. What is a dialog box intended for?
Ans. A dialog box, is a type of child window (i.e., it belongs to an application window) which is used
to provide the user with the means for specifying how to implement a command, or to respond
to a question or an “alert”.
11. State one difference between a Drop-down list and a List box.
Ans. When a drop-down list is inactive, it displays a single value. When activated by clicking, it
displays (drop-down-list) a list of values, from which the user may select one. This control is
used to select one or more items from a list contained within a box.

12. State the process of moving a Window from one part of the screen to another.
Ans. Besides resizing the Title Bar is also responsible for moving a window from one location to
another on the screen. To move a window:
1. Bring the mouse pointer on top of the Title bar.
2. Now click and drag the Title Bar to move the window along with it.
13. What is a Ribbon in Windows 7?
Ans. The Ribbon is one of the newest features of Windows 7. It provides the User Interface (UI) with
a large toolbar with graphical representation of various options grouped according to different
functionality. A Ribbon may contain tabs to view the various options in these groups.
14. What is Recycle Bin? State the process of restoring a file from the Recycle Bin.
Ans. When a file is deleted in Windows it is usually not permanently deleted but gets stored to a
special location called the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin also allows you to restore a file/folder to
its original location in case you have accidentally deleted the file/folder.
Double-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop to open up the Recycle
Bin window. In case you need to restore all files in Recycle Bin you can click on the Restore all
items button at the top of the Recycle Bin window.
15. State two situations when the files deleted do not reaches to the Recycle Bin.
Ans. Two situations when the files deleted do not reaches to the Recycle Bin are:
• Files/Folders present in fixed disk (usually inside your computer) gets to the Recycle Bin when
deleted. Files deleted from removable media, such as memory cards, USB/jump/flash drives,
external hard drives connected via USB and floppy disks, are not sent to the Recycle Bin, but are
instead permanently deleted.
• Files deleted from within the Windows command prompt are not sent to the Recycle Bin and are
instead deleted immediately.
16. How do you change the shape of the Pointers in a Mouse?
Ans. To change the shape of the mouse pointer follow these steps:
1. Click on Control Panel -> Mouse.
2. Click on it to get the Mouse Properties dialog box and click on the Properties tab.
3.Click on the Scheme drop-down list and select a new mouse pointer scheme to give your mouse
pointers a new look.
4. Under Customize you change the shape of an individual pointer. To change an individual mouse
pointer simply click on the relevant pointer in change in the list or click on the Browse button, which
in turn will present you with a list of available mouse pointer shapes in your computer, click on the
pointer you want to use and then click on the Open button. Now click on the OK or Apply button.
17. What are Desktop themes? How do you change it in Windows 7?
Ans. A desktop theme is a combination of images, colours, screen saver, sound, etc., that makes your
computer attractive and lively.
To change the desktop theme follow these steps:
1. Click on Control Panel -> Personalization.
2. Click on it to see a list of available themes.

3. Scroll through a list until you get a suitable theme. Now click on it to change the Desktop theme.
18. What is a Screen Saver? How do you change the waiting time of a Screen Saver?
Ans. A screen saver is an animated image which gets activated whenever no user activity has been
sensed after a certain period of time.
The default time for the activation of screen saver with no activity on the users part is generally 1
minute, which you may change by typing the wait time.
19. What is a Desktop Gadget?
Ans. A desktop gadget is a small graphical application (widget) that is placed on the users’ desktop
which are used to do simple task.
20. What is a shortcut? Give the steps involved in creating a shortcut for a file on the ‘Desktop’.
Ans. A shortcut acts as a link to an item on your computer. It is possible to create shortcuts and then
place them a convenient location, such as on the desktop or on the Navigation Pane in Windows
Explorer, so that you can easily access the item that the shortcut links to.
E. Application based questions:
1. Miss Sweta was working on her computer with Applications Word, Excel and Media Player
open. Suddenly she remembered a file which she needs a hardcopy that is kept on the Desktop.
Suggest the easiest way of accessing the Desktop.
Ans. Miss Sweta may access the Desktop by clicking on Show Desktop button which is on the right of
the clock on the Taskbar.
2. Mr Raghav recently learnt “Numerology” a branch of Astrology in a community workshop. To
try out a live example he took his friend’s date of birth. The problem is he does not know the
day name on which he was born. Suggest a way that Mr. Raghav is able to know the day name
quiet easily in Windows 7.
Ans. Mr Raghav can click on Date and Time option of the System Tray of the Taskbar and scroll
through the date to locate the day name of the date.
3. Mr. Arpan at ASITECT Company requires to repeatedly use OpenOffice Writer, Calc or
Impress at his office. As he repeatedly uses these Applications, he kept shortcuts of these
applications on the Desktop. But this did not help much; as every time he started an application
he had to go through the Desktop, which is usually covered by another Application Window. Is
there any other way he could access such Applications fast. Also state the process of creating the
shortcuts for these Applications.
Ans. Mr Arpan may Pin or fix applications to the taskbar and access them with a single-click of the
mouse. To pin or unpin an application to the Taskbar the following steps are involved:
• To Pin a program, drag it to the taskbar and release.
• To Unpin programs, simply right-click on the icon on the Taskbar and select Unpin this program
from taskbar.
To create a shortcut on the desktop, for the above applications the following steps are involved:
1. Open Windows Explorer to locate the applications to which you want to create a shortcut.
2. Right-click the object and then click Create shortcut.
3. Drag the new shortcut to an open area on the desktop.

Summer break. His brother while playing on his computer accidentally deleted the file. Can
you help Ronnie in getting back the “project.docx” file.
Ans. Ronnie may use the search option of the Start Menu for a quick search of the specified file.
5. Aqil got a laptop from his dad on his 11th birthday. He happens to find that the time shown on
the Taskbar is not correct. Suggest a way by which he will change the system time.
Ans. Aqil can use the following steps to change the system time:
1. Open Control Panel and scroll through it until you get Date and Time.
2. Clicking on it will bring the Date and Time dialog box. Now click on the Date and Time Tab if not
visible.
3. Click on Change date and time button which will bring you the Date and Time Settings dialog box,
where you change the systems date and time.
4. Click on OK button on completion.
6. Sunidhi is a lefty and therefore always faces a problem in doing practicals, as the mouse is set
for the right handed person. Suggest a method by which the mouse may be configured for
Sunidhi.
Ans. Sunidhi can use the following steps to configure the mouse for a left handed person:
1. Click on Control Panel -> Mouse.
2. Click on it to get the Mouse Properties dialog box.
3. Click on the Buttons tab and click on the Switch primary and secondary buttons checkbox will
reverse the left and right mouse buttons, i.e., instead of click using the left mouse button you need
to do it using the right mouse button.
7. Sulekha recently hurt her fore-finger and finds it difficult to double-click on the mouse button
to start an Application. Suggest a way through which she can access an Application upon
single-click of a button.
Ans. Sulekha needs to follow these steps:
1. Scroll through the Control Panel until you get Folder Options.
2. Click on it, which in turn will present you with the Folder Options dialog box.
3. From the General Tab option, click on the option button single-click to open an item (point to
select) and click on OK or Apply.
