Bukod dito, inaasahan din na
madaragdagan ang investors na
magnenegosyo sa ating bansa dahil
naniniwala ang mga ito na magtutuloy-
tuloy ang pag-angat ng ekonomiya ng
Pilipinas.
Sa isang linggong pamamalagi ni

Nagawa ring makipag-usap ni Pan-

nitong pamamalagi sa Estados Unidos

ating bansa na siyang magiging dahilan
upang umunlad din ang kabuhayan ng
bawat Pilipino.
Ang ipinakikitang dedikasyon ni
Pangulong Aquino na paunlarin ang
ating bansa ang nagbibigay ng lakas ng
loob sa mga Pilipino na maging matatag
hanggang sa makuha nating lahat ang
inaasam nating kaunlaran.

Now, she has no means of livelihood. His nephew Chris, 20, is
the only member of the family who has a regular job. Her husband
is a construction worker who often does not have a job.
She was traumatized by the lost of their store. She would
have wanted to slowly set up a store again but is having sec-
ond thoughts. “It is difficult to invest again. What if “Ondoy”
would happen again?” Abanedo said.
Jaymee Tolentino, 24 of Sitio Anahaw, Barangay Ilaya in
Alabang, Muntinlupa, just gave birth to her third child when
“Ondoy” struck. Her house was smashed by the other houses
that fell during the height of the typhoon. Fortunately, they were
able to vacate their house before it was smashed down.
After the typhoon, Tolentino got sick but was not able to
go to the doctor. Her two other children were also ill and her
newborn had loose bowel movement. “I was also the only
one who took care of everything while we were building this
house. And because my husband’s job was affected when we
were rebuilding this house, we had no means of livelihood.”
Tolentino is jobless and his husband is a tricycle driver.
She said to be able to rebuild their house, they sold all
their cellphones and loaned money from a loan shark with
20 percent interest. The local government of Muntinlupa also
gave cash vouchers worth P7,000 ($159) to buy materials for
their house’s reconstruction.
Still in Danger Zones
Both Tolentino and Lubat have stayed where they are.
Lubat who hails from Dumaguete did not avail of the

ito sa pondo ng ibang ahensiya o programa ng pamahalaan.
Pero, dapat ilagay ito sa ahensiyang higit na nangangailangan
sapagkat kung hindi ay masasayang lamang ang nasabing
halaga.
Kung ako ay tagapayo ni Pangulong Aquino, sasabihin at
igigiit ko sa kanya na idagdag ito sa badyet ng Department
of Education (DepEd). Marami kasing pera ang kailangan
ng DepEd para sa pagpapagawa ng mga gusali, karagdagang
aklat, banyo, silid-aklatan, at karagdagang mga guro.
Totoong maraming ahensiya ang naghahangad ng kara-
gdagang pondo tulad ng Department of Health (DoH), pero
dahil sa P304.6 milyon lang naman ang bawas sa badyet ng

Tanggapan ng Pangulo, ituon na natin ito sa edukasyon na
kagyat na kailangan.
Isa pa, sinasabi naman ng ating Saligang Batas na ang
edukasyon ay siyang dapat makatanggap ng pinakamalaking
pondo sa lahat ng kagawaran at gastusin ng pamahalaan.
Kaya, dapat gawin nating totoo ito sa realidad.
Kung ilalagay nga ito sa DepEd, nakasisiguro akong
mayroon itong patutunguhang maganda dahil kumbinsidong-
kumbinsido akong makabuluhang proyekto ito na ilalaan ni
DepEd Sec. Armin Luistro.
Hinggil sa ikalawa. Sabi ni Executive Secretary Paquito
Ochoa Jr., kumbinsido si Pangulong Aquino na mas magig-

naniniwala akong higit na mapagtutuunan ng pansin ng
pangulo ang sentro ng kanyang programa: Ang pagresolba sa
kurapsiyon at kahirapan bunga ng naibawas sa mga usaping
pagtutuunan ng atensiyon ng pangulo. Ang mga gawain at
proyekto ng nabanggit na mga tanggapan ay maaari nang
gawin ng iba’t ibang ahensiya ng pamahalaan na nakatuon sa
mga ito. Kung tutuusin nga ay dapat nang matagal na nilang
ginagawa ito, kaso binuo pa ang nabanggit na mga ahensiya

Sa pagresolba ng mga suliranin sa isang organisasyon,
lalo na sa isang lipunan tulad ng sa Pilipinas, napakahalaga
na magkaroon ng pokus ang lider. Ito’y upang mayroong
kahinatnan ang kanyang kagustuhang maresolbahan na
mga problema.
Ang anim na taon ay hindi sapat upang maresolbahan
ang napakalalim nang problema sa kurapsiyon, kahirapan at
edukasyon ng Pilipinas, ngunit naniniwala akong mayroong
substansiyal na magaganap o pagbabago kung magkakaroon
ng pokus si Pangulong Arroyo laban sa kurapsiyon, kahirapan
at mga suliraning sa edukasyon.

Senator gets death threats
for jueteng expose
ALMOST a week after exposing the names of
suspected jueteng lords and operators as well as ben-
eficiaries, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago revealed
yesterday she has been receiving death threats by
telephone through her Quezon City office.
Confined for hypothyroidism in her Quezon City
house, Santiago has instructed that all calls for her
should be routed to her Quezon City office.
In a radio interview, Santiago said she received
reports from her office staff that anonymous callers
are making the death threats.
The calls were received by Sandy Schala, the sena-
tor’s executive assistant and by Matilde Fuentes, the
administrative head of Santiago’s office.
Santiago said the callers left messages to “take
it easy on the operators and the PNP” or insisting
that “she should present witnesses or shut up” or
demanding that “she should resign or else.”
According to Santiago’s executive assistant, the
messages have been relayed to the senator.
As immigration commissioner, for which she
was named laureate of the Magsaysay Award for
Government Service, Santiago created an urban
legend when she reportedly commented: “I eat death
threats for breakfast.”
Private schools push
weekend homework ban
PRIVATE schools are throwing their support to
a Department of Education (DepEd) memorandum
prohibiting elementary school teachers from giving
their pupils homework for the weekend even if the
directive is only meant for public schools.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro said at the
budget hearing they are getting so many inquiries
from private schools asking if they are covered by
the order and that they are in support of it.
He also said some private schools are already
implementing the so-called homework ban although
he did not identify them.
According to Luistro, Memorandum No. 392 was
issued due to various complaints received by the
department that school children have been getting
“too many” assignments.

fellow troubled socialite, Paris Hilton - who was

PCG joins clean-up drive
THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ex-
pressed its willingness to be involved again in
the clean-up operations to help rid the Manila
Bay of garbage.
As part of the observance of the 25th Inter-
national Coast Clean up Day last Saturday, the
PCG collected 1,500 sacks of garbage from three
different points of the Manila Bay.
The clean-up operations were also conducted
as part of the celebration of the Maritime Week.
It was also part of the event of the Maritime
Training Council.
This was not the first time the PCG got involved
in clean-up operation at the Manila Bay.
Last year, the PCG also conducted clean-up
operations after the “Ondoy” typhoon.
Captain Lyndon La Torre, PCG- Marine
Environmental Protection (MEP) deputy chief
of staff, said the PCG collected 1,500 sacks of
garbage during the four-hour clean up activity
on Saturday.
Joining the 200 PCG personnel were staff
from the Department Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR), Maritime Training Council
(MTC) and employees of the local governments
such as Pasay City and Manila City.
Some students from different schools also
joined the activity.
The PCG said there were three points which
were subjects of the clean-up operations namely
the Longos Creek along Coastal Road in Cavite,
SM Mall of Asia (MOA) in Pasay City and the
Baywalk area in Manila City.
