Question 01. How has Indian film industry evolved through ages?

Answer:

When the first film was showed, all the people screamed and ran to the back of the screen. So it’s an
important question how was the beginning of Indian film industry and how it evolved through ages.

Motion picture technology was first introduced in 1896 in India by Lumiere Brothers. The Indian film
industry can be divided into four major generations’:

 1920-1950 (The Early Days of Indian Cinema)

 1950-1960 (A Golden Age of Indian Cinema)
 1970-1980 (The Angry Young Man Awakens)
 1990-Present (Bollywood Gains Global Popularity)

1920-1950:

It was the early age of Indian film industry. During that time film tickets were made
affordable to the common people at low price and in Bombay the minimum ticket price was 4 paisa.
Young producers and directors began to be attracted to the industry. Indian social cultural aspects of
life were shown in the commercial Indian films.

‘Alam Ara’ was the first Indian talkie film, released by Ardeshir Irani on 14 March, 1931. First
Bengali talkie movie was ‘Jamai Shasthi’.

1950-1960:

The period is regarded by film historians as the ‘Golden Age’ of Indian Cinema. Some of the
most critically acclaimed Indian films of all time were produced during this period. This period saw
the emergence of a new parallel cinema movement mainly led by Bengali cinema. These films
expressed social themes mainly dealing with working class people of urban India.

Uttam Kumar was the most popular Bengali actor of that time. ‘Pather Pachali’- in 1955 by Satyajit
Ray was the first part of ‘The Apu Trilogy’. ‘The Apu Trilogy’ won major prizes at all the major
international film festival.

1970-1980:

This stage is called ‘The Angry Young Man Awakens’ because at this period the Indian
cinemas were becoming more explosive and violent. During this period there was a great political
instability, falling of money exchange value and corruption was growing up. So by the influence of
these changes, the directors started making the movies showing the angriness of young man. ‘Solay’
and ‘Deewar’ were popular films of that time.

1990-Present:

Global popularity of Bollywood films started mainly from the success of ‘Dilwale Dulhania
Le Jayenge’- in 1995. Indian film makers realized that world is the market for Indian films. They
started making qualified films not for only the sub-continent but for the whole world and they took the

benefits of globalization to make films, hired highly qualified technicians from abroad and used latest
technology. Indian liberalization has helped the Indian film industry to entry of Multinational
Corporation and foreign investments. A large number of Indian films are made under foreign
producers and directors. ‘Shadows of Time’ can be the best example, a Bengali language German film
directed by Academy Award winning director Florian Gallenberger and produced by Helmut Dietl
and Norbert Preuss. Famous films like ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ are based on India.

India is the largest producer of movies in the world. In 2006, India produced about 1090 films while
Hollywood produced only 607. Now Indian film industry has an annual growth rate of 12.6 percent
when compared to Hollywood that has 5.6 percent.

That is the real scenario of present Indian film industry and that’s why an Indian movie ‘Krrish’
overtook the Hollywood movie ‘Superman Returns’ in revenues, not only in India but all around the
world.

Question 02. How did the project (krrish) created taking into consideration Indian
Diaspora abroad?
Answer:
This film was too much different from the other films of Bollywood. It made a new platform for
Indian film Industry all over the world. This project became very much popular and acceptable to the
Indian as well as the foreign people. So it became a great attraction to the Indian Diaspora. This
movie has some unique features which actually attracted the NRI (Non Resident Indians). All of those
factors are described below:

At the very beginning we want to tell about the technological features of this movie. In this project
some ultra modern technologies were used. The sophisticated visual effects for Krrish, involved 3D
modeling and animation including whole body scans for simulating stunts. Several 3D models of cars,
bikes, helicopter, birds and animals were created and animated to match live action footage. All of
these technologies attracted the NRI people because they are very much fond of advanced
technologies. Those people usually want to see the movies in which the modern technologies must be
used to make the movie standard. Generally Indian movies couldn’t contain those types of
technological features which Krrish contained. As a result this project was a considerable one to the
Indian Diaspora.

Secondly, we must admire the marketing policies were used in this project which made the whole
world informed about Krrish. By promotional strategies Indian Diaspora knew about this movie and
the technologies and experts were used in this movie. These things helped this project to come into
the consideration of Indian Diaspora. Besides, for hall selection they considered which traditionally
catered to Indian movies and traditional theaters in the areas of Asian population. This thing created a
great way to enjoy this movie to the NRI all over the world and by this way they could experience this
masterpiece work.

Thirdly, before the creation of this movie, the Indian people couldn’t enjoy the use of better
infrastructure in movies. But this movie was totally different from the others from the point of view of
Page |4

using better infrastructure. In this movie audience saw a city full of skyscrapers, flyovers, roads full of
traffics etc. All of those really represented a well infrastructure city. Generally NRI people expect this
feature in a movie because it is very usual to them. When NRI people saw this movie at that time they
took it into consideration for this feature.

Fourthly, superhero concept was very much new to Indian movie industry. So it drew the attraction of
Indian Diaspora. There was another factor working and that was that superhero of this movie was
little bit different than the western superhero. This superhero just could run fast and could maximize
his strength. He had no power like flying or spinning web etc. He was just an ordinary Indian boy
nothing else. All of these really created a very different superhero character. This feature of this
movie was also very much responsible to make this movie considerable to the Indian Diaspora.

Finally, this movie reflected the social and cultural environment of India. It also reflected the family
relationship and affections and all of those highly tie all Indian people with India. So the Indian
Diaspora was not different from that. They also became attracted by those factors as well as emotional
factors used in this movie.

According to above description we want to say that all of these factors of this movie made itself
attractive to Indian Diaspora abroad. These factors made a distinctive identity of Indian film to them
as well as the whole world.
