Brief: To design a small art gallery, retail store or café, or any combination of the three.

Considerations:
The architecture should incorporate:
• Appropriate interior spaces for its function
• The site and how this can be optimised
• Primary structure versus partitioning of spaces
• Display of art work, food or product to be sold
• User experience

Site:
• Albert Square on the corner of Heretaunga Street and Karamu Road, Hastings.

Types of art that could be exhibited:


• Painting
• Photography
• Printmaking
• Time-based media
• Sculpture

Types of retail space:


• Clothing
• Food speciality store (e.g. chocolate shop, cheese shop, etc)
• Body products
• Sporting equipment (cycling, skateboarding, etc)
• Music

Café possibilities:
• Take away facilities
• Seating inside or outside or both
• Food prepared in house or brought in
Design steps/tasks:
Instructions for each task will be given to you as needed. The following lists the tasks and approximate dates that
these will be covered in class.

Task 1: Concept Generation: Art, retail product and food theme exploration
Term 2, week 7

Task 2: Site observations, ideation and explorations


Term 2, week 8

Task 3: Inspirational architecture exploration (Including research of interior space and exterior form)
Term 2, week 9

Task 4: Inspirational architecture exploration. (using 3d explorations, photography and Photoshop)


Term 2, week 10

Task 5: Structural and material possibilities


Term 3, week 1

Milestone hand-in Wednesday 25th July

Term 3, weeks 2, 3 + 4
