BATHING AN INFANT/UNDRESSING AND DRESSING AN INFANT/


CHANGING INFANT’S DIAPER

PREPARATION:

1. Provide a comfortable room environment.

2. Wash your hands.

3. Collect necessary equipment and place articles within reach.


a. Infant tub or sink
b. Two bath towels
c. Cotton balls
d. Wash cloth
e. Warm water
f. Baby soap
g. Baby shampoo (optional)
h. Baby powder, lotion or cream
i. Diaper
j. Clean clothes

4. Position the bed at a comfortable working height.

5. Place towel, laid out in diamond fashion, on bed next to basin.

PROCEDURE:
1. Test water temperature with your wrist or elbow.

2. Lift infant onto bed, using football hold.

3. Remove all clothing except shirt and diapers.

4. Cover infant with towel or blanket. Keep your hand on the


infant at all times.

5. Clean infant’s eyes, using a cotton ball moistened with water.


Wipe from inner to outer canthus, using a new cotton ball for
each eye.

6. Make a mitt with a washcloth.

7. Wash infant’s face with water.

8. Suction nose, if necessary, by compressing suction bulb prior


to placing it in nostril. Release bulb after it is placed in nostril.

9. Wash infant’s ears and neck, paying attention to folds; dry all
areas thoroughly.

10. Use a football hold when washing an infant’s hair and scalp,
using a circular motion. Rinse hair and scalp thoroughly.

11. Place infant on a towel with head facing the top corner.

12. Use the corner of the towel to dry infant’s head with gentle,
yet firm, circular movements.

13. Remove shirt or gown.

14. Remove and place closed safety pins in a safe area away
from the child. Remove diaper by picking up infant’s ankles in
your hand. Wipe buttocks with diaper if necessary.

15. Pick up infant and place feet first into basin or tub. Immerse
infant in tub of water only after umbilical cord stub has fallen off.
Pick up infant by placing your hand and arm around infant,
cradling the infant’s head and neck in your elbow. Grasp the
infant’s thing with your hands.

16. Wash and rinse the infant’s body, especially the skin folds.

17. Carefully remove the infant from water.

18. Dry infant’s body gently but thoroughly.

19. Wash infant’s genitalia.

a. For a Female: Separate labia and with a cotton ball


moistened with soap and water, cleanse downward once
on each side.

b. For an Uncircumcised Male Infant: Do not force foreskin


back. If it can be retracted, gently cleanse glans penis
with a cotton ball moistened with soap and water.

c. For a Circumcised Male Infant: Gently cleanse with plain


water

20. Replace infant’s diaper and re-dress in a new gown or shirt.

21. Provide comfort by holding the infant for a period of time


following the bath procedure.

22. Wash your hands.
