1. A circular rod of diameter 50mm is subjected to loads as shown in fig. Determine nature
and magnitude of stresses at the critical points.

2. A 50mm diameter steel rod supports a 9 KN load and in addition is subjected to torsion
moment of 100N-m as shown in fig .determine maximum tensile and maximum shear stress

3. A rectangular plate 15mm thick made of brittle material is shown in fig below.
Calculate the stresses at each of three holes.

4. A stepped shaft of circular c/s shown in fig.is made up of 20Mn2 steel (σyd=431.5 MPa).
Determine the value of ‘d’ and fillet radius, so that the maximum stress will be limited
to a ratio corresponding to a factor of safety of 2.5

5. A non-rotating shaft supporting a load of 2.5 kN is shown in Fig. The shaft is made of
brittle material, with an ultimate tensile strength of 300 N/mm2. The factor of safety is
3. Determine the dimensions of the shaft.
6. Derive an equation for impact load due to axial loading
7. Derive Soderberg criterion for fatigue
8. A mass of 50 kg drops through 25 mm at the centre of a 250 mm long simply supported
beam. The beam has a square cross-section. It is made of steel 30C8 (σyt = 400 N/mm2)
and the factor of safety is 2. The modulus of elasticity is 207 000 N/mm 2. Determine
the dimension of the cross-section of the beam.
9. A cantilever beam made of cold drawn carbon steel of circular cross-section as shown
in Fig., is subjected to a load which varies from – F to 3 F. Determine the maximum
load that this member can withstand for an indefinite life using a factor of safety as 2.
The theoretical stress concentration factor is 1.42. Assume the following values :
Ultimate stress = 550 MPa, Yield stress = 470 MPa, Endurance limit = 275 MPa, Size
factor = 0.85, Surface finish factor= 0.89

10. Determine the maximum load for simply supported beam, cyclically loaded as shown
in figure. The ultimate strength is 700 MPa, the yield point in tension is 520 MPa, and
the endurance limit in reversed bending is 320 MPa. Use factor of safety of 1.25. The
load, size and surface correction factors are 1, 0.75 and 0.9 respectively
