Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

On America’s/Britain’s Got Talent, the best contestants are the ones who perform in a manner opposite of
what their outward appearance would lead you to think. Susan Boyle and Paul Potts come to mind.
Recently thirteen year-old Courtney Hadwin expressed how nervous she was about singing in front of the
audience and then boldly and confidently belted out a song, even dancing along with it. The judges were
astounded and delighted.

In today’s Gospel, we hear the story about Jesus preaching in the synagogue. The people listening to him
are annoyed. They know his family. They know his background. They essentially ask one another, “Who
does he think he is?” Jesus isn’t living up to the expectations that others had for him.

Sometimes people complain about church, as in, “It isn’t what I expected to be.” Well, I suggest that
church is a complicated place. We commemorate a lot of different things with a big group of people, all of
whom are in a different place in their respective lives. I often think of a pastor of a Catholic Church in
North Carolina who felt so awkward preaching about the Nativity on Christmas morning. Sitting in the
front row was a family who had just lost their breadwinner in a tragic accident a few days before
Christmas. That family made a tremendous, perhaps unexpected, proclamation of their faith by merely
showing up and being with everyone else.

May all of us find that which we are called to do, whether it meets other people’s expectations or not.
