DOUBLE SKIN FACADE SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION ADVANTAGE CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The double-skin facade is a system of building consisting -Increase energy efficiency
of two skins, or facades, placed in such a way that air flows -Control solar heat, protect building from excessive
in the intermediate cavity. The ventilation of the cavity can sunlight
be natural, fan supported or mechanical. Apart from the -Glare control
type of the ventilation inside the cavity, the origin and -Passive night-time cooling system
destination of the air can differ depending mostly on -Sound insulation, noise reduction and acoustic Steel box

climatic conditions, the use, the location, the occupational enhancement

hours of the building and the HVAC strategy -Airspace perform as insulating
-enhance visual and aesthetic quality
-Pollution barrier
THE COOPER UNION FOR THE
-Increase building life span
ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART -Allow natural ventilation

DISADVANTAGE Perforated steel panels

-High investment cost

-excessive heat gain due to high U-value
-Space consumption

Program: Academic and laboratory building with
exhibition gallery, auditorium, lounge and multi-purpose
space, and retail space

INTELLIGENT FACADE SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION ADVANTAGE CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
Intelligent façade system is carried out many benefits in a -enhance visual and aesthetic quality
building. There are many functions of intelligent façade -Pollution barrier
system for a building such as enhancement of natural light, -Increase building life span
protection from glare, sound and noise insulation, provision -Allow natural ventilation
of inside and outside view, enhancement of ventilation, -Flexible to control amount of light and wind
heat or cold collection, protection from pollution, safety penetration, filtration
protection, protection from rain, solar gain, and solar -Increase level of engagement
protection. -Fresh air for occupants Hinge

FüNF HöFE – MUNICH, GERMANY DISADVANTAGE

-High installation cost

-High maintenance cost
-Expensive labour works
Folding
panels

Rolling
path

The Shopping mall Fünf Höfe(English: Five Courtyards)

Location: Center of Munich (in the area of Salvator-,
Theatiner-, Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße

HypoVereinsbank building complex.
GREEN ROOF SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION MATERIALS DISADVANTAGE
Green roofs, also known as living roofs, are rooftops covered
-Greater expense than traditional roof
with living vegetation planted in lightweight engineered soil
-Increase in weight load
over drainage material and a waterproof membrane. You
-Require extra maintenance
can't use regular garden soil on green roofs because it often
-Damaged root barrier layer may cause roof leaks
will compact and kill the plants. Although green roofs offer
-Complex repairs if roof leaks
many benefits, such as providing an environment for wildlife,
reducing stormwater runoff, and lowering a building's heating
and cooling costs, there are a number of disadvantages to CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
installing green roofs that may cause you to consider other
roofing options.

THIRD PLACE - MEDIA LIBRARY IN THIONVILLE

ADVANTAGE

-Beautify property
-Increase usable space
-Green roof is used to filter stormwater, reduce
overload to city sewage treatment systems, purify
rainwater
-Lower temperature(grass is cooler than asphalt) -
heat island effect
-Reduce energy cost
-Helps with insulation
-Increase lifespan of a roof
-Enhance air quality
(reduce up to 37% of sulphur dioxide, 21% of nitrous
acid, 0.2kg of dust particles/sqm each year)

COMPOSITE FLOOR SLABS ON METAL DECKING SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION ADVANTAGES CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
Composite floor slabs use metal decking, which -Versatility
spans between secondary steel beams usually -High resistance
Concrete
spaced at between 2.5 and 3m centres. Metal -Lesser weight finish on
decking acts both as permanent formwork for the -Quick and safe installation
metal sheet

concrete, eliminating the need to provide props, -Cost reduction (labour and material
and as tensile reinforcement for the slab. Steel bars price)
are included in the slab to prevent cracking and to -Durable
provide reinforcement in the event of degradation -Stiffer
of the decking in a fire. -Allow longer span of slab

PERNICK ACADEMIC AND DISADVANTAGES

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
-Non aesthetic enhancement
-Shear connector installation Corrugated
Metal sheet
increase field cost
-Time consuming
-Poor sound insulation compare to
timber

2.0 LIBRARY FACADE DESIGN
DESIGN INTRODUCTION

KLANG COMMUNITY LIBRARY

WEST

EAST

DOUBLE SKIN FACADE SYSTEM

The front of the building is designed with an extra layer. By creating double skin
facade to control the daylight from entering to the building directly. The design
material is perforated steel panels which allow the sunlight to penetrate into the
building but with controlled amount.

INTELLIGENT FACADE SYSTEM

.At the back of the building is designed with the programme of library and reading
areas. The facade uses smart folding wire mesh panels, folding up the facade is to
allow more ventilation and let adequate amount of light into the space. From the back
alley, people would be attracted by the facade as the back facade of the other
buildings are designed to not approach to the people.

GREEN ROOF SYSTEM

Green roof system is used to provide green area for the community as there are no
proper green recreational space for them to utilize. This is an opportunity to enhance
the community’s liveliness and green roof decreases temperature of sunlight before
entering the building.
