PROPOSAL
A brief written description of the proposal. Include all items proposed.

The holistic rehabilitation of the planter boxes will reestablish the historic intent while addressing
current use. It will be accomplished by repairing and infilling vegetation in outer edges of the planter
boxes. Existing trees in fair and good condition will remain, new native shrub species will be planted,
and a small area defined for gathering is proposed at the interior edges.

PROJECT PURPOSE:
This project will holistically rehabilitate the interior of 36 planters that comprise the
north and south edges of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Tree and shrub plantings will be
restored and interior edges sensitively improved to accommodate concert viewing and
gathering. The planters are original to the amphitheatre construction, designed and
built to physically and visually separate interior seating from exterior circulation. The
planters have consistently been used informally for concert and performance viewing.
More recently the amphitheatre has become popular for recreational uses. The
planters are used daily for gatherings and exercise activities, further damaging historic
walls and trees. Original shrub plantings are completely gone and many original trees
have died and been removed. The trees that remain are in varied condition and health.

PROJECT GOALS: COMPATIBLE AND SENSITIVE DESIGN:

BURNHAM HOYT SKETCH, 1933

Burnham Hoyt originally designed the planter boxes as a visual barrier between amphitheatre seating
and the edge of pedestrian walkways to minimize disruption during events and concerts. The
architectural edge reinforced the geometry and is a defining feature of the amphitheatre. Uniform
plantings originally assisted in providing the visual barrier, but were largely missing or modified by 1954.
