closure

sharing intellectual property

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Students will organize, create, and
publish a narrative writing piece.

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: Students will work throughout the year to create a narrative writing piece. They will continuously
work on creating a piece of writing by using the writing process, and then will be able to publish their
narrative to KidPub. The students can peer review each other’s narrative, make comments on what they liked
about each of their peers writing, or comment with a continued story to expand the conversation on each of
their writing. We will work together all year to go over in depth the instructions of the assignment.

I will use this as a way to allow students to collaborate with one another on their writing, as well as provide
them with an opportunity to publish their work on the web. The teacher will also provide feedback on their
papers as well.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be publishing their narrative to the web, which will give their peers, near peers,
mentors, and community members the opportunity to provide constructive feedback and comments
on their writing piece.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The students will work on going through the writing
process to finish this narrative. Therefore, they will be peer editing online as well. They will write, edit,
and publish on their own with the help of direction and instruction from the teacher.

c. Higher-order thinking: Since the students will be given the opportunity to provide constructive
feedback to their peers and their writing, it will involve higher-order thinking. The students will also be
given the choice of extending the story by adding a separate ending or continuing the story all
together.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The teacher
will use the writing piece published by the student to grade for the standard.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: The teacher will ensure that they have received
all documentation and parent consent forms prior to allowing the students to proceed with the online
project. The teacher will work with the students and continuously go over online safety throughout the
project. The teacher will constantly monitor the students work to ensure that there is no breach in privacy
occurring. This will be a continuous project that the students will work on and at the end of the year publish
their writing on the web.
