INTRODUCTION
Reading is the process of making and getting
meaning from printed word symbols. It is man’s deepest
pleasure for it enables him to ponder the mysteries of the
world.It gives him a glimpse of the world’s excitement,
pleasure, and wisdom.
An individual is considered a full man only when
he is endowed with the ability to read a wide variety of
materials. By the power of reading, he widens his horizon and
Frees himself from the bondage of ignorance and retardation.
The teaching of reading is a continuing challenge
to parents/ teachers. There is always a need to increase efforts
in effective literacy which requires reflection, even more so
during today’s rapidly changing times. It is not surprising that
there has always been great concern over whether Pepe or
Pilar , is learning to read. Today’s public concern for
reflective ability is injected in many books, magazines
newspaper columns and even in editorials.
With the increasing stress of multi-sensory
learning in most educational materials, it can be concluded,
therefore, that there is the need for high reliance on speech or
recognition of the school of the interrelated of a well-
developed speaking and listening vocabulary in learning to
recognize words and in understanding what is read. “The
child whose growing vocabulary should match the
experiences for which he uses words as labels can become a
truly advantaged reader in same way that the lack of it can be
distinct disadvantage for the beginning reader.
METHODS
This study employed the descriptive research design
with quantitative method for the research using the oral
reading materials with the basic text for the grade level. The
sampling technique was used in grade two focusing on the
reading ability test and English performance.
The respondent of the study were the thirty grade two
pupils in Calbayog Pilot Central School. The pupils were
given Oral Reading Test after reading the
sentences/paragraphs, several questions were asked to test
pupil’s comprehension. A pupil was considered outstanding
if he could read very well and could answer all the questions
asked; very satisfactory if he could read very well and could
answer four questions correctly; satisfactory if he could read
well and could answer three of the questions asked;
moderately satisfactory if could fairly read and could answer
one or two of the five questions asked ; he was considered
non- reader if he could hardly read and could not answer
correctly any of the questions. The mean was computed using
a conversion table to determine the quality of instruction in
reading.
RESULTS
The table below presented the test of significant
difference of the reading inventory test scores of the
respondent and the academic performance in English. Table

DISCUSSION

The study showed that the reading inventory test of

grade 2 – Venus pupils that has a satisfactory readers and
academic performance in English has a slight correlation. The
result implied that Reading Instruction needs improvement to
attain an ideal percentage of outstanding quality.
