FIREWOOD for SALE
The Kaslo & District Community Forest Society will be selling two
logging truck loads of firewood this summer to raise funds for
our community events, such as the Winter in the Forest Festival.
The wood will be sold by silent auction (bids), sight unseen with
the loads going to the two highest eligible bidders.
Anyone can bid, whether a commercial firewood seller or a
home-owner, as long as you have somewhere that the wood can
be unloaded, any time it becomes available between now and
November, 2018.

 Singer-songwriter and guitarist Kim Mitchell has achieved gold and

KasloHousing moving ahead in quest
for affordable housing
The Kaslo Housing Society is moving quickly ahead as
it seeks funding to create affordable housing in Kaslo and
Area D. The next BC Housing Request for Proposal calls for
family and seniors housing and the first round for propos-
als closes in early September. The Kaslo Housing Society is
looking to build some family accommodation and the Kaslo
& District Seniors Citizens Shelter Society is looking for
funds to aid in their planned expansion of Abbey Manor.
“We had a bit of a setback with our spring proposal for a
multi-unit housing project south of the river,” commented
Kevin Flaherty, KHS’s Housing Coordinator. “The con-
cept was good but the proposal had a few undetermined
expenses. There were also a large number of requests for
that pool of funding. We are learning from the past and
building a stronger proposal to meet the requirements of
potential funders,” he noted. “We had the opportunity to
sit down with representatives from BC Housing and find

things we can do is reduce those areas of uncertainty, par-
ticularly around site and building costs.”
The need for affordable housing is obvious and seem-
ingly everywhere and the Province of BC and the Federal
Government seem to be committed to increased and new
funding to help meet that need. Kaslo is full of skilled,
competent builders and the community has a ‘can-do’
attitude which serves us well. But as Kevin remarked “To
be successful in obtaining that funding we need to prove
that we are prepared, show that we know what things cost,
how to get things done and how we will manage the facili-
ties. Like they say in school, you need to, show your work.”
One of the ways to get some cost and timing certainty
includes partnering with professionals in the design and
building phases and having contractors prequalify them-
selves to be eligible for contracts, when they are tendered.
To explore those processes with local building profes-
sionals and suppliers Kaslo Housing Society and the
Abbey Manor organization held an information session
July 12 at the Kaslo Arena Meeting Room. The goal was to
inform possible building partners and tradespeople about
how the funding works and how they could get involved.
About 18 local contractors attended. There will be other
sessions when information will be shared with the gen-

Kathleen passed away peacefully in her sleep on the
morning of July 18, 2018 at Kootenay Lake Hospital. She
was born in Nelson, BC on August 1st, 1935 and raised in
Kaslo by her father (Mack Murphy, 1908-1977), mother
(Vera Murphy, 1910-1992), along with her five siblings.
She attended school in Kaslo through to Grade 11, then
moved to Mill Valley, California in 1953 to complete her
Grade 12 at Tamalpais High School.
Afterwards she moved back to Kaslo where she met and
married George Royal Craig (1933-1995) on August 8,

Kathleen is survived by her two children Kevin (Carmela)
and Leanne (Bob Marsh); two sisters Karen and Carmel;
her four grandchildren Patrisha (Corby), Rebecca,
Coleman, and Courtney; her two great-grandchildren
Max and Miss Tillie; as well as two step-grandchildren
Jamie and Cole.
Kathleen had a love for history and reading. She enjoyed
cooking (everyone has had her home-made buns) and
painting in her spare time. Many of her friends and
family have her painted glassware to remember her by.
She was known as ‘Nana’ by all her grandchildren and
friends. Everyone who met her will remember her for
being strong, independent, and feisty. She would do
anything for anyone who needed help. She was a tough
but loving soul. She was a great friend to many and the
best mother and Nana anyone could have asked for.
We love you so much and will see you again one day!
There will be no funeral by request; the family will have a
private gathering at a later date.

In the Community Gallery Revelstoke artist Jo C. Wil-
lems uses the comfortable language of landscape to invite
the viewer into her exhibition about getting old. Gouache
paintings and handmade books represent her personal
journey of learning to let go and the insights of aging.

Field Doll in Nelson
The Field Doll will be taking up residence at Touch-
stones during the late summer and fall of 2018 and will
also be making an appearance at several iconic spaces
throughout the City of Nelson, including the Big Orange
Bridge (BOB).
Benning has exhibited the Field Doll both in Canada
and the US by placing the work in the context of each spe-
cific place via photographs, which is an essential part of
the process and presentation. The work is an irreverent
ode to place and change and the proportion of both to
the viewer and their perspective. The doll is dropped into
scenes, as if by the whim of a petulant child, and there
is a whimsy and wackiness to this large scale installation
piece which underlies the inherent sadness (and down-
right creepiness) of the cast-off doll in unexpected places.
This exhibition will be available from August 11 until
October 28 in Gallery B at Touchstones Museum of Art
and History.

for Out of the Closet And Into the Koots, a Queer “zine”
(a self-published magazine) launch for September’s
Pride weekend. Organized by volunteer Gabor Lovas,
the project will publish submissions for local Kootenay
