Activity Students will write and illustrate a story. They will
begin by making a list of ideas then organize those
ideas into a story. They will continue to revise and edit
for clarity and descriptiveness. Once the story is
complete they’ll use my storybook to turn their story
into an illustrated book.

Directions for Use 1. The teacher should begin the lesson by
teaching the components of a story; a plot with
a beginning, middle and end.
2. Next the teacher should describe the writing
process; brainstorm ideas, organize and order
ideas, write rough draft then edit to add detail
and improve clarity.
3. The teacher should then demonstrate these
concepts by having students call out ideas for a
story as she writes them on the whiteboard.
Then students should help organize those ideas
logically, write a rough draft and then make
editions together as a class.
4. Once completed, the teacher should pull up my
storybook webpage and demonstrate the
following steps for creating a story.
a. Open browser and go to
https://www.mystorybook.com/
b. Create a user name and password for
students to use
c. Click on “Create a storybook” to get
started
d. You can click on the “Tutorial” button
for a demonstration on how to create
your book
e. Use the icons on the left to build your
story. The “items” icon can be used to
add pictures of various items and
characters. You can move, resize,
duplicate or remove the items once
added to the page. The “draw” icon
can be used to draw with a variety of
brush types and colors. The “text” icon
is where you add the text for your
story. You can change the font size and
color as you like. Once the text is
added you can resize the text box and
place it wherever you’d like. The
“scene” icon has various scenes to add
to your page or lets you fill the page
with a color.
f. The first page is your title page, click on
the “My First Storybook” text to
replace it with the title of your book.
Add images or scenes as desired.
g. Once you’ve finished with your title
page click the arrow to move to the
next page. You can add as many pages
as you’d like using the “add page”
button. You can also delete a page
using the “delete page” button.
h. Lastly, create the back of your book by
clicking on the text prompts to add a
short summary of your book.
i. When you’re finished with your story
click on the save button.
j. The last step is to click on Publish to
publish a copy of your book.
5. Once all elements have been demonstrated the
teacher should instruct students to create their
own story using the same steps.
6. Students will first draft a list of ideas for their
story
7. Next, they will organize their ideas into a story
with a beginning, middle and end
8. They will edit their story to add detail and
improve clarity
9. Once they’ve finished writing their story they
should proceed to My Storybook website and
complete instructions a-j.
10. While the students are working on their stories
the teacher can walk around answering
questions, guiding anyone who is stumped, etc.
but should encourage independent creation of
individual stories.
11. Once assignments are complete the students
should provide the teacher with the link to
their published storybook for review and
grading.
