Discussion

1) Based on figure 2, we can observe that the data we collect from the experiment is
similar bell curve shape that we can see from the theoretical result. The shape of the
curve indicated that the pressure increase from the initial point 1 to point 6, then the
pressure difference gradually decreased from point 7 to point 10. Besides that, we can
observe that the pressure highest point is located at point 6 which is 75° of the
cylinder. As we learn from Bernoulli equation, the higher the velocity of the fluid, the
higher pressure of the fluid. This can be shown from the graph as we increase the
frequency of the fan motor, the velocity of the fan increases as well and also the
pressure. After the pressure difference reach its maximum value at 75𝑜 , its start to
decrease as the curve rise to positive value. This is due to the separation of the
boundary layer occur after 75𝑜 where the velocity of the fluid started to drop. Thus,
we can see the decreases of pressure different after point 6.

The major different of the experimental data and theoretical data is that experimental
data does not start from position value as the theoretical data. This is highly due to the
position of the cylinder shape that is not 100% parallel to the flow of the fluids. Thus,
this causes some error in the experimental data that we collect.

2) Based on figure 4, we can see that the change of pressure different in each points of
the aerofoil shape. The shape of the graph is totally different from the one that we
obtain from cylinder shape due to the shape different. Besides that, the maximum
pressure different occurs at point 4 which is located at the centre of the aerofoil shape.
This is due to the centre is the most concentrated point where the fluid will flow
through and create a thicker boundary layer. Thus, this create the highest pressure
different at the point and also same as the frequency of the fan continue to increases.
There are some unstable data collected after point 4 and may due to the unstable
condition of the aerofoil. The aerofoil shape object was unable to secure tightly
throughout the experiment and cause the inaccurate of data to happen.

Conclusion

After conducting the experiment, we can conclude that the thicker boundary layer location,
the higher velocity of the flow and will create a higher pressure different. Besides that, we
also learn that different shape will produce different pressure distribution due to the way of
separation of boundary layers are different.

Recommendation

The main reason that we unable to collect accurate data is due to the position of the object. I
would recommend that we apply thing like laser pointer at the apparatus to ensure that the
cylinder object is 100% parallel to the flow. Furthermore, the object need more items like G-
clamp to hold it secure to avoid movement of the object during the experiment.
