Objective:

This is to test the Petrel hydraulic fracture correlation using different grid
sizes. A LGR case has been created (with modified k at the fracture zone) as
the reference case.

Background
1.The model size is constant at X(0,1000), Y(0, 1000), Z(-1500, -1000);
2.Vertical well is used and the well header & trajectory is constant;
3.The model properties as:
Permz = 0.2md
Permx, permy = 1md
Perm frac = 1000md
Poro = 0.25
X (0, 1000), Y (0, 1000), Z (-1000, -1500)
4.See next slides for the model generated for testing purpose.
Model description:

10x10x10 50x50x10 100x100x10 200x200x10

250x250x10 500x500x10
These result are
over optimistic as
Results compared to the
LGR case

The result shows only HF case with grid size of 200x200x10 produces close
result to the LGR case. See next slides for each case description.

Reference Case

The BaseCase_LGR, was created as the reference

case where the LGR perm where the fracture
takes place has been modified (1000md)

Scenario 1
The 10x10x10 (BaseCase_HF), the well was placed at the
center of the cell, but the fracture plane is crossing to other
cells, it produces moderate result;
Scenario 2
In the 100x100x10 (HF_100x100x10), 250x50x10 (HF_250x250x10) and 50x50x10
(HF_50x50x10) cases the well was placed at the corner of a cell, and the fracture
plane is crossing to other cells, this produces an over-optimistic result;

50x50x10

250x250x10
100x100x10
Scenario 3
The 200x200x10 (HF_200x200x10) the well was placed at the center of the cell, the
fracture plane is within the cells, it produces very close result to the LGR base
case;
Scenario 3
To further verify scenario 3, I created another 2 model with different grid size, but
keep the well at the center and fracture plane within the cells:

a b

143x143x10 111x111x10

X(0,999), Y(0, 999), X(0,999), Y(0, 999),

Again it shows a consistent result. The HF correlation where the fracture plane is
within 1 cell is a better match than the correlation where the hydraulic fracture
crosses other cells.
