new year. We may have failed God in the past but there is
still time left on the clock and still work that needs to be
done for Jesus here at Bethel.
Let us win the game in life and get to the finish line.
Year 2010 is another opportunity to prepare us and others
for the Super Bowl of Life.

just me, it’s everybody. I knew we were in trouble as a society
when I saw a lady get on the plane who put her laptop on her lap
and her baby in the overhead baggage compartment. Well, I’m
slowing down. I’m going to relax. I’m actually going to relax
better and faster!.....I’m tired of desktop dining and informational
hell. I don’t want to be reached at doitfast.com. I’ve decided to
take my mother’s advice. If she has said it once she has said it a
thousand times: ‘Charles, be still.’ The two most important
buttons on my computer from now on are going to be ‘delete’
and ‘off’. Of course, you can’t just turn off your computer; it
asks if you are sure you want to sign off! YES, I’m sure!”
“I’m not saying to drop everything. There is a season for
getting things done, but there is also a season of rest. There is
(also) a season of evaluation......Some things are not worth doing
even if you can do them five times faster. So I threw away my
‘to do’ list. If it’s not important enough to remember, it may not
be important enough to do. Then, I cut off my computer and
took a golf lesson. My golf teacher said, ‘No wonder you don’t
have any power. Your back swing is too fast. A little pause at the
top is what gives you power.’.....I need to pause at the TOP;
(because) that’s where the power is.”
Yes, here at Bethel B.C. there is work to be done. But first,
all of us need to pause at the TOP (that’s where GOD is, you
know) and be certain we are ready for our parts of the job! ?

Metanoia Church
Dear Bethel Baptist Church,
As 2009 rolls to an end, my heart is full of joy over what God has
done in our midst at Metanoia Church this year. Please join me in
returning thanks to our Lord Jesus for all he has done this year so that he
may receive all the glory and praise due unto him. Here are a few
ministry highlights to praise God for:
Salvation and commitment: We celebrated salvation and covenant
Partnership through the baptisms of ten persons—several of whom were
baptized in Bethel’s baptismal font. Our Partnership (i.e. “membership”)
doubled in size this year.
Children ministry: We started a children’s Sunday morning
ministry as the number of children in our midst doubled.
Worship Gathering location and Office Space: Due to
circumstances beyond our control, in August Metanoia was forced to
relocate from the Roger Carter Rec Center where we have gathered for
worship for several years. In September, we began meeting at
Sharkey’s—a cocktail lounge on Main Street. We rented our first office
space on Main Street to provide a space for children to meet during our
worship gathering. Our new location works out wonderfully for us
in several ways: 1) It is dead center on Main Street and highly
visible to pedestrians. 2) Many of the people we are ministering
to frequent Sharkey's during the week so the space provides a
familiar environment for folks we are ministering to and
sharing the Gospel with. 3) Meeting at Sharkey's has pushed
us out of our comfort zone in a good way. We are forced to
think deeply about our church's
missiology and ministry
philosophy in ways we
never have before.
We served the

community for
Mission News
Our summer mission trip is planned for July 10 – 17, 2010. We
will be going to Havre, Montana to work with Immanuel Baptist
Church (IBC). They have an outreach ministry with a Native American
Tribe, Chippewa Cree and we will be working with them on their
reservation. We will be doing construction work and Backyard Bible
Clubs at IBC in the mornings. In the afternoon and evenings we will do
VBS for the 50-60 children on the reservation. Our goal is to have 15 –
20 people go including some of our youth. Please watch for more
information as we continue to work out the details. If you are

Our Lottie Moon Christmas Offering was a great success. Our
goal was $20,000 and as of January 8 we have collected $19,841. We

our fourth year in a row during the annual Fall Festival and Midnight
Madness events. Our Community Groups carried out multiple missional
projects including: prayer walks, establishing a partnership of service
with the Catonsville Children’s Home, cleaning up the Tiber River on
Main Street and volunteering at a homeless shelter.
We sent three service teams to the Garden Church—a church plant
we are supporting in Baltimore. We helped them set up their new
worship gathering space and partnered with them in renovating an inner
city elementary school.
Thank you for your Kingdom partnership this year! As you can see,
we benefited greatly from your financial support in 2008-2009 and from
the usage of your facilities. May God continue to bless both Bethel and
Metanoia as we work to see Ellicott City transformed by the gospel of
Jesus Christ! ?

The Mid-Maryland Baptist Association
(MMBA) is sponsoring a mission trip to Vancouver,
British Columbia, February 20-27 for this year’s
Winter Olympic Games. Volunteers from MMBA
churches will be among the large volunteer force giving
away coffee, bottled water, and city maps. They will also
help in hosting big screen events all over the city and pass out
more than 500,000 Bibles. Anyone interested in going can call
410-549-7156 or sign up online at www.wecare.org. Cost is
approximately $1,000.
Our annual food drive began on January 17 and will go through
February 27. The food will be divided between the MMBA food
pantries, the Thrift Shop and the Inner Harbor ministry. Please place
your non-perishable foods in the box in the foyer.
Our follow-up mission trip to Ravenswood, West Virginia was a
great success. On November 13 – 14 a team of 6 traveled to
Ravenswood with food and clothing that was collected from our
congregation. We were able to serve 35 families with clothing and
food.

Home Touch
Ministry
The Home Touch Ministry continues to
minister to the homebound families and
persons in our church. We call, visit, and are
available to help in various ways as we
interact with the individuals in our Home
Touch Family. Norman Moxley is a new
addition to our “family”.
We always take a Mature Living
magazine when we visit our friends and tell
them of the current activities at Bethel
Baptist. We often do this with a
bulletin from the previous
Sunday. We also ask about
their lives and their needs
so that we can share
any prayer requests
with the prayer
chain.
In December
we visited each
of our families
and took them a
Christmas gift.
We gave each a
gift bag with hand
sanitizer, wet wipes,
candy, shampoo, lotion
and a ceramic snowman for
the men and a nativity figure for
the women.
The Shangri-La ministry is going well
since we started in August. We average about
20 residents that attend our Sing-along. We
go to the facility each month and sing hymns
and some “fun songs” with the residents. We
also have a short devotional at our gathering
led by Pastor Jimmy or one of our team.
Often some of the worship choir members
join with us in this occasion. The residents are
very involved and seem to thoroughly enjoy
the interaction with us. At Christmas we
made stockings out of old Christmas cards for
the residents and put a candy cane, tract, some
candy, and a brochure about our church in
them. They really bless us more than we
bless them.
Concerning this assisted-living ministry
we give thanks to Mary Jane Daniels for
leading the singing, to Dot Warren for playing
the piano (and to Beth Foster who played one
month), and to Faye Collins for preparing the
songbooks for us.
Please pray for our ministry that we can
give hope and cheer to those we contact and
to give them the Gospel in word and song.

Prayer Warriors
Recently, one of the prayer requests
that came in was for “prayer warriors” to
pray for an immediate need. That’s what
occurs when a prayer request is
made..…people go to “battle” to pray for
healing to occur, surgery to be successful,
problems to be solved, jobs to be found,
or peace and comfort during a loss, to
name a few types of prayer requests.
Praying for someone is very “active” –
not passive. It is urgent that something be
done when people need the Lord’s
intervention. Of

Our praise band, which serves the
8:30 AM Sunday worship service, has
been a great blessing to me. I am Mike
Kirkpatrick, and have been directing the
praise band since September. Thanks to
Andy Mitchell, I was brought into contact
with Pastor Paul. I have had experience
in a similar staff position at Govans

accept God’s perfect timing and method He
chooses to answer prayer knowing that He will
always do what is best for us or the situation in
that He sees the “big picture”. Part of any
request is a follow-up to keep us informed of
the progress and then to always thank the Lord
for answered prayer. It’s easy to cry out to the
Lord and want prayer when we need
something, but we don’t want to ignore
thanking the Lord afterwards and continuing to
live in a state of prayerfulness.

Committee
This committee was formed to help
Bethel Baptist families in need of meals
during times of serious illness, surgery and
stress. We will organize those members
willing to make and deliver meals to the
family or individual in need. If you need help,
or are willing to help, contact Shirley

name of Jesus will go a long way in people’s

Presbyterian, as well as playing in bands at
Grace Community Church and Hope
Presbyterian. The best experiences that I
have had in music, have been praising God.
Our band musicians here at Bethel are
very dedicated, creative, and fun to work
with. If you have a heart for worshiping
our Lord through music, feel free to give me

discuss how your experience and instrument
may lead to your participation. Violins,
guitars, flutes, voices, drums, hand
percussion, brass, reeds, and keyboards
can all be worked in, as well as most
other instruments. How often you
wish to play is at your discretion, so
this does not have to be a
commitment every week. We do have
a midweek rehearsal, which is very
enjoyable as we work together to
incorporate ideas. If you are not sure,
just call anyway and we'll talk it over. ?

Girls In Action
Throughout this school year the GA's,
as you might remember, have been
learning how to be physically, spiritually,
mentally and socially fit. In January, their
fitness concept is to spend time with other
Christians and they have been learning
about the mission field in West Africa. The
girls have the opportunity to earn points for
things like bringing their Bible and
offering to GA's and for knowing their
Bible verse each week. After earning a set
number of points, they receive a charm
bracelet and as they continue to earn
points, they will also earn charms. Most of
the GA's have already earned their
bracelets and are well on their way to
earning their next charm. Others are very
close to earning their bracelets.
Our fitness concept for February is to
tell people about Jesus and the topic for the

Preschool News
Last month, the preschoolers had an opportunity to learn
that Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season! They also
shared His love by sponsoring a special family from the
Angel Tree! The children participated by giving their
pennies and other coins. Over $150.00 was
collected to buy this family a Christmas dinner
and donate to the ministry! Our Christmas parties
and pageant had to be postponed until after our
Christmas break because of all the snow God sent
us. We had fun celebrating the 12 days of
Christmas when we returned to school and had our
Christmas pageant on January 6!
During the month of January, all of the classes
will be learning about transportation and how people travel
in God’s world. Then in February we will learn about God’s
love and also have a celebration on Valentine’s Day.
Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for February 10th and
11th.
Looking ahead to March, the 4-year-olds will be
studying about God’s ocean and exploring the
creatures of the sea. We a have visit from the
National Aquarium in Baltimore scheduled for March
3rd. The 3 year-olds will begin a unit on the Five
Senses with a field trip to a local restaurant. Our
annual Dad’s Night will be held on March 18th.
If you would like to recycle your old Christmas
cards, coffee cans, shoeboxes, and Crystal Light
canisters, the preschool continues to collect these items for
future art projects. ?

Greetings!!!
Bethel has always been known for its
warm and friendly greeting to each other
and guests. This year we have
implemented a new ministry of placing
two assigned greeters inside the sanctuary
for each service and also a person
providing refreshments for the “Meet and
Greet” time for our guests following each
service. This has been a real blessing to be
able to get to know our guests, and
minister to their needs. Most guests
choose to fill out an information card
which is then followed-up by the Pastors
and greeters.

Bible Study
The 2010 Winter Bible Study
produced by LifeWay Christian Resources
is Stories for Life: Jesus’ Parables of the
Kingdom in Matthew. This study will
lead adults to have a better understanding
of the kingdom of God as well as of the
parables in the Gospel of Matthew. In
addition, the study will show adults how
to enter and live in the kingdom as well as
how to await its consummation. Sunday
evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the Old Chapel.

Committee
Our Social Committee hosts several
events during the year. We host
Celebration Sunday in March, May,
September and December. In February
we have a church wide Valentine Dinner
as well as various other special events that
are planned for the church. We need
volunteers to help set up the room, serve
food and clean up after the event. Please
