3. Assessment Evidence-
Students will be broken into groups based on region. They will be given packets with information on their
regions to research the conditions and settlement patterns of their region. After analyzing the given information
on their regions I will assign them different fictional figures and they will explain why their figure would or
would not live in their assigned region.

4. Opening Hook-
Discuss with students how people adapt to the environment of a particular location or relocate for better
conditions.

Sample questions:

• If you wanted to become a movie star, where would you live?

• If you want to be a corn farmer where would you live?

• If you wanted to be a lobster fisherman, what region of the country would suit your needs?

5. Instructional Strategies/Student Activities-


The class will have a brief discussion.

Sample questions :

• What do you think influenced where people chose to live in colonial America? What influences are there
now?

• If you wanted to become a movie star, where would you live?Why?

• If you want to be a corn farmer where would you live?Why?

Following the discussion I will provide students with resource packets on the New England Colonies, Middle
Atlantic Colonies, and Southern Colonies.

7. Grouping Paterns-
Students will be broken three groups to research their regions.

8. Ending, Summary/Reflection-
Students will end the lesson by explaining which region they themselves would have chosen to live in and why.
They will also explain 5 similarities and differences between the factors that affect settlement patterns then
and now.
