4. A ground water sample is investigated, and it is found that the water is contaminated by excessive manganese (Mn)
and sulfate ( SO24 ) ions.
What may be the potential source of this ground water pollution? Justify your answer. (4)

Answer: Natural source may be the potential source of this ground water pollution because these substances such as
manganese & sulfate ions found naturally in rocks or soils.
Manganese is a chemical element & not a free element in nature. It is often found in minerals in combination with
iron. Manganese ores are found in metamorphic rocks or sedimentary deposits. It is reactive metal chemically active
with water and air.
Sulfate can be naturally occurring or industrial discharges. When naturally occurring, they are often the result of the
breakdown of leaves that fall into a stream, water passing through rocks or soil containing gypsum or other common
minerals. Besides, sulfate ions could be the use of fertilizer in soil as ammonium sulfate.
