Re: Alaska’s At-Large Congressional District Poll Results
Date: June 22, 2018

A new Lake Research Partners poll of likely general election voters in Alaska’s at-large Congressional
district shows Alyse Galvin and Don Young in a competitive race for the seat.1. Young’s job performance
has reached an all-time low in our 20 years of polling in Alaska. With almost one-quarter of voters
undecided, Galvin has room to move voters in her direction by communicating her strengths and positioning
herself as the best candidate to represent Alaska, drawing contrasts with Young, and demonstrating that
it’s time for a change.

Don Young Vulnerability

Our survey results show Don Young to be in a vulnerable position, evidenced by a poor job performance
rating and views voters express about Young.

A majority of voters say Young is doing a just fair or poor job (59%) as their member of Congress, and
voters are nearly three times as likely to say he is doing a poor job (28%) than to say he is doing an excellent
job (10%). Young’s job rating is even weaker among independent voters, with more than two-thirds (68%)
saying he is doing a just fair or poor job (34% poor), and even among Republican voters, over one-third
(36%) say he is doing a just fair/poor job.

Don Young Job Performance

Voters were also asked to rate how well certain words or phrases describe Don Young. The traits Young is
most associated with indicate that voters agree Young has been in office for too long and it’s time to move
on. The traits Young is most associated with include:

• “Has been in Washington too long” (51% very well; 73% well)
• “Not respectful enough to people” (33% very well; 53% well)
• “Too tied to special interests” (33% very well; 59% well)

Donald Trump currently has net-negative job performance (-14) and favorability (-8) ratings. A majority of
likely Alaskan voters currently rate Trump’s job performance as just fair or poor compared to two-in-five
voters who say he is doing an excellent or good job. In terms of favorability, 53% of voters have an
unfavorable impression of Trump compared to 45% who have a favorable impression. These results also
indicate that the political environment is much more favorable for a challenger than we’ve seen before.
