Abstract

In this paper there is a 5-year professional development plan. These plans are aligned with

the Nevada Educator Performance Framework (N.E.P.F.) – Teacher Professional Responsibilities.

The plans identify which N.E.P.F. Professional Standards and Indicators they meet. Additionally,

the personal development plan includes past, present, and future growth opportunities of the

teacher candidate beginning with the 2017/2018 school year, and culminating with the 2021/2022

school year.

A Look Forward

My school-site conducted a year-long ELL ALCA-M training during the 2017/2018

school year. The training included 7 learning sessions and 7 debriefing sessions. These sessions

taught strategies for us to use and reflect upon for our English language learners. The focus was

primarily on literacy and vocabulary challenges that ELL students face in the classroom.

Between the learning sessions and the debriefing sessions, I completed homework that

incorporated lesson plan creation, reflections, visual aids, and analysis of complex texts. This

training aligns with the N.E.P.F. Professional Responsibilities Standards 1 (indicator 2), and

Standard 2 (indicator 2). These standards focus on supporting school and district initiatives, and

improved instructional practice.

During the 2018/2019 school year, our school-site is projected to be a one to one

technology to student classroom. Included in this is implementation of student Gmail accounts,

and the use of Google Classroom. Currently, I am facilitating my grade level (fourth grade)

training in Google Classroom with the assistance of our on-site computer specialist. We are

going to be exploring the many uses of the Google Classroom application in an intermediate

elementary classroom. This training will align with the N.E.P.F. Professional Responsibilities

Standards 1 (indicator 1), and Standard 2 (indicator 3). These standards focus on actively

participating in collaboration and mentoring colleagues.

My third professional development goal to meet is to complete the Clark County School

District Instructional Coaching professional development class during the 2019/2020 school

year. This class will, “provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively

coach and mentor teachers. Participants will internalize the Partnership Principles and develop an

understanding of student-centered coaching, the coaching cycle, coaching conversations, and the

development of impactful workshops. Participants will have multiple opportunities to reflect on

coaching practices and consider how to use the components of coaching in their professional

practice” (CCSD, 2014). This professional goal will give me opportunities to lead and guide

teachers at my school-site. This course aligns with the N.E.P.F. Standards 1 (indicator 3),

Standard 2 (indicators 2 and 3), and Standard 3 (indicators 1 and 2). Overall, these indicators

reflect upon the professional ability to take a leadership role in supporting colleagues and invest

in the growth of the school and the community.

My fourth-year goal I have set is to take Spanish language courses at the local

community college. This will impact the staff, students, and community at whichever school-site

I work at in CCSD. During the 2016/2017 school year 46 percent of CCSD students were

reported to be of Hispanic or Latino culture (CCSD, 2017). My ability to speak Spanish will

create further value in any educational setting. This goal aligns with N.E.P.F. Standard 3

(indicator 1), Standard 4 (indicators 1 and 2), and Standard 5 (indicators 1 and 2). Overall, these

indicators are focused on supporting diverse families, supporting student learning, and building

community.

Finally, my fifth-year goal is to begin my second Master’s Degree in School Counseling.

This goal will allow me to work in elementary schools as a counselor, and hopefully lead to me

assisting with alternative behavior management practices. The institution I will begin my

Master’s Degree in School Counseling has not been chosen, and will depend on finances, and

available time. This professional development goal aligns with the N.E.P.F. Standard 2

(indicators 1, 2, and 3), Standard 4 (indicators 1, 2, and 3), and Standard 5 (indicator 3). Overall,

these indicators focus on community partnership, interest in the needs of students, and pursuing

professional learning opportunities.
